I just watched a bit of footage of Boltgun II. Gotta admit, I was doubtful about Alanah Pearce's casting in the game. But DAMN, she has voice acting chops! She clearly understood the assignment. Her line delivery is phenomenal.

I very often see folks parroting wonky information about channels that don't upload as much as they used to. And this is often accompanied by wails of "I wish they'd tell us what they were doing." But why would they bother if they know whatever they say isn't going to be listened to?

Life's too short to waste chasing things you don't really want. You shouldn't play games you know you can't win. Unless you find joy in simply playing them. And a lot of folks really need to learn to be less hard on themselves.

And the thing is, it's all crap. Success and failure both share something in common. Either state, however you define them, is temporary. Nobody who gets to the top stays there indefinitely. And nobody who finds themselves at rock bottom stays there either. This stuff is all just a distraction.

I see stuff like this a lot. The pressure society piles onto people to achieve 'success' has always struck me as being wrong-headed. It's so often attached to things that are impermanent or subjective in value. It's not helped by the fact that so many folks are keen to point out 'failure.'

I thought it was also important to remind my friend that he is anything but a 'failure.' He's brought up a kid on his own for the past 10 years. He's kept a roof over their head and kept them both fed in a BRUTAL economy. And his son has never had to compete for his father's attention.

So. Taking pains to not be unkind about it, I asked my friend to consider what his son REALLY takes enjoyment in. And once he'd worked that out, he needed to encourage it - within reason. Because pushing a child down a path they aren't interested in can be a very, very bad idea.

This discussion culminated in my friend actually becoming quite tearful, and telling me how he wanted this for his son because he worried he might never amount to anything. Because, in his own eyes, my friend considered HIMSELF a failure who's done nothing with his life. My friend is 37 years old.

We had a pretty frank discussion about this. I told him that if his boy really wanted to learn how to play music I'd encourage that all day long. But it felt to me like my friend was foisting his own desires onto his kid. That is understandable, but not healthy.

To cut a long story short, what I managed to get out of him was that his kid didn't really have any interest in the guitar. It was something his dad suggested to him and he just said 'Yeah, okay' as teenage kids do. So, basically, it was an idea that appealed to his dad more than it did to him.

Something felt... off. So I asked my friend if he'd like to meet up for a drink and talk it out. So this morning, we met in town for a cup of coffee and I asked him what the whole deal was. I explained that he was about to set foot down a VERY expensive path that many kids don't stick with.

That's totally unrealistic. But I wasn't going to say that outright. Instead, I figured I'd ask a few questions. What was at the back of my mind the whole time was that I know my friend's kid. He has NEVER shown any interest in playing music. He likes Lego, comics and his Xbox.

If you treat the guitar as disposable, so will your kid. It's not an especially encouraging approach. So I explained that it might be a bit overkill. You have to learn to crawl before you can walk with the guitar. "Well," he says "I'm kind of hoping I can get him playing songs within a few days."

I told him the best thing to do was probably what my dad did to get me started on guitar back in the day: Buy a decent cheap acoustic guitar - maybe a nylon string one, to be kinder to the fingers - and a book or DVD to show the basics of chords and scales. His response?

I had a chat recently wit a friend who wants his son to learn the guitar. Says he wants him to 'play songs on day one.' (Words have been had.) This kind of thinking is not new, sadly. And I fear it's folks like this who are buying into the idea that generative AI somehow makes them creative.

One thing I will say, though: If you enjoy what creators are doing, leave them a comment. Those are better indicators than charts and stats.

Wowzers. Just gone 3:00am, and I've just downed tools after building a simple animation in Sony Movie Studio. It's for a new intro sequence for Doomed Colonist. It's nothing spectacular. But I'm quite pleased with how quickly I got it together and how polished it already looks.

What an immense pile of absolute horse shit! If you are unable to create art because of a lack of learned skill, you have the option to LEARN THAT SKILL. If you're confined to a wheelchair, you can't learn how to suddenly become physically able. Does this really need to be said?
