Anyway.... I've been having trouble sleeping the past couple weeks. I'm just not enjoying life anymore. And I feel like I've had too many negative interactions with folks that I feel wouldn't happen under normal circumstances. I'm scared a lot these days.

Yesterday, I resigned from chairing CCCC 2027. NCTE (Emily Kirkpatrick) couldn't give me a definitive action plan for my safety and wanted to wait until we got closer to April to make a decision. (Emily let me know that she monitors my posts on this site. So, Hi Emily! 👋🏾)

And I realized that there are people who have it way worse than I do. And I really shouldn't complain, but this all fucking sucks. And the one thing that I'd hope is that people lead an organization that I've been a member for years would at least act to protect me rather than cover their own asses.

Two days ago, I had to ask my physician, if it was possible to increase the dosage of my SSRI. I've gone from 50mg to 100mg of Sertraline. Everything right now is difficult. I'd never imagine in a million years that this is where I'd be.

My life has changed in the past three months. I no longer feel joy nor am I looking forward to the future. I'm anxious about going to work and have panic attacks regularly. I cannot tell you how many times this week I've thought about what I'd do if Hamza came to my office or my house.

Their email is not a concern for my safety, but a concern for their own liability. And it is incredibly disappointing for them to ask me to provide them with context, so that they can better respond to the situation. I've never been more disappointed in a group of human beings than right now.

To learn that I disclosed this to them and they couldn't even email me that he contacted them is upsetting. He contacted them, they sat on it and waited for me to contact them AFTER RSA's executive team contacted me to tell me that apparently NCTE has their lawyer addressing the situation.

We talked about the possible need for security in Milwaukee at CCCC. I've asked for something similar at NCA. I told them that I just do not feel safe right now until Hamza is arrested. Full disclosure, there is an active warrant for his arrest because I'm pursuing criminal charges.

I didn't respond because I didn't think I needed to and was instructed not to have communication with him. Then he started again and has continued since last year. This is why he was disinvited from the RSA conference in May.

Hamza was angry about this and then began cc'ing tons of people on email. There was a period that he stopped. He messaged me and told me that he was off his meds. He also indicated that he wanted to meet and noted that Ralph Cintron encouraged it.

What started all of this was that Hamza submitted a manuscript to Intermezzo and Jeff Rice declined the manuscript. Hamza then wrote to me asking me to overturn Jeff's decision. enculturation and Intermezzo have separate editorial processes.

I was reticent to contact the police, especially as his messages got increasingly vulgar and alarming. For example, he was fixated on peeing on and in me, and wanting to kill me slowly among other things. It was only when he sent me my home address and asked me to confirm it, that was too much.

I didn't post this here last night because I was extremely upset. Hamza Ahmad has been emailing NCTE about me. I feel it is important for people to underscore that I have never met Hamza Ahmad. And I've done nothing to deserve his targeted harassment over the past year and the last two months.

Email from Emily Kirkpatrick:

Donnie,

Mr. Ahmad recently contacted NCTE via a short email alleging, without any support or detail, that you were accused of assault and identity theft. The email also referenced him having a security detail. While NCTE, to the best of our knowledge, currently views these allegations as factually unsubstantiated, we take such communications seriously and have consulted with counsel and other professionals on an appropriate course of action. Of course, safety is our primary concern.

We were in the process of preparing a response to Mr. Ahmad and a communication to you regarding this matter when we received your email below. We want to understand the situation so that appropriate preventative action can be taken if necessary. Would you please provide us with the background regarding your interactions with Mr. Ahmad, including if he is the same person you mentioned in prior conversations, so we can determine next steps?
