As much as that would suck, it WOULD make my mission of convincing everyone I know to dump D&D and pick up Daggerheart instead. The fact that the Castle High campaign frame already exists makes it an easy sell, too.

The more I think about it, the more I realise that my ideal TTRPG campaign is literally just Dragonball Z Abridged, and Daggerheart is the only system I know where that vibe might actually be achievable.

My first Journey to Horizon session couldn't have gone any smoother if I'd tried. \o/ So excited to finally be on the road.

Daggerheart has got me in the habit of listing touchstones for basically everything, as a way to remember the general vibe of a person or place. It's leading to some pretty wild combinations of media...

A cleaned up version of the Journey to Horizon map, from the Hope & Fear expansion for Daggerheart. I didn't love the split down the middle or the text round the edges, so I've covered it up as well as I can. It's not perfect but it'll do. Should be suitable for UK A3 printing, but not tested yet.

Had a D&D session last night that reminded me just how much I've come to hate D20 TTRPG systems. Level 2 Guiding Bolt, my characters most powerful attack, w/ Advantage. Rolled a 1 and a 3. Oh well, bad luck, see you in 45 minutes when the initiative comes back round. Daggerheart has ruined me. 😅

One thing I really hate about Daggerheart discourse is when people describe it as rules-light. It has exactly the correct amount of rules - there's even some rules it could drop. It only looks light to you because you're comparing it to DnD, which has a million unnecessary and contradictory rules.

Is there a bluesky feed for TTRPGs that specifically excludes DnD? I know that's difficult to set up in practice, but even one that just excludes a few basic key words would be good. I don't want to use my word filters as I do still want to see DnD stuff, but a place without it would be good too.

Finally running my Session Zero for my Journey to Horizon campaign today. \o/ Slightly nervous, as I've never run a Session Zero before, and I've never even attended one for Daggerheart.

I designed a Hot Springs encounter for Daggerheart! On a long journey through the mountains, the party come across a beautiful natural hot spring where they can rest and recover. But if they aren't careful, they may disrupt the harmony of this natural wonder and find themselves in trouble...

Another little amendment to my Journey to Horizon campaign. I decided that the 'Locate Soul Echo' downtime move didn't have enough meat to it, so I've made it an action roll.

In addition - writers, if you want me to care about your world, don't plonk me down in the middle of it with zero memory/knowledge of the world. It works in videogames because you get to play the game, it works in TV/Film because you just sit there and watch. It doesn't work for TTRPGs/Books.

Update on my enhanced Journey to Horizon biome table for Daggerheart. Though you could use it for any TTRPG worldbuilding, I suppose. Just replace the rule for if you roll a 1 - maybe something like "Roll Twice and Combine Biomes"? Depending on how whimsical you're going with your environments.

I've reworked the Journey to Horizon biome rolltable slightly for my Daggerheart campaign. I found more examples of the existing biomes, and added an 'Otherworldly' biome for those more whimsical/horrifying adventures.

I really enjoy all the weird notes that I have to write myself when preparing to GM Daggerheart (or any TTRPG, really). Today's note, "Work out what the sun is." My world doesn't have planets or space or anything, but it defo has a giant fireball going across the sky, so what's that about? 😅

A year into running Daggerheart, I've created literally dozens of new adversaries. In decades of D&D, I've never felt the same urge to create legions of new monsters. Why? Daggerheart does 3 things inviting GMs to become game designers.

This is one for Journey to Horizon specifically, but in the campaign frame, the Fungril Network (my favourite Daggerheart ability) has been destroyed and regrows as time goes by. I didn't want to be handwave-y with the regrowth speed, so I came up with a mechanic by which to control the growth.

Inspired by @bardandraven.bsky.social 's recent 'Mawdrey' Social Adversary, I wanted to try making some plants for the multiple Nature's Tongue users on my table to talk to. I really love the concept of Social Adversaries in Daggerheart, but I feel like it's criminally underutilized so far.

TTRPG players - and especially Daggerheart players - what makes a good Halloween oneshot? I want to try my hand at designing an actual oneshot rather than random bits and pieces, and with Halloween coming up, it makes sense to give that a crack.

By the time I'm finished running Journey to Horizon, I fear I'm going to have an encyclopedic knowledge of every biome that exists on Earth and a bunch that only exist in fantasy TTRPGs. 😅 Though good news, I'll be able to take over for Attenborough once he finally decides to retire.

Me: I feel like this should go without saying, but most of my advice generally assumes the table is playing in good faith and not making actively antisocial choices

Them: advice for an idealized perfect party isn’t very helpful in real world scenarios.

Two of my players wanted to be mermaid sisters in my Journey to Horizon game, so we worked together to come up with a new ancestry for them - the Merfolk. Daggerheart's Mixed Ancestry mechanic is easily one of my favourite parts of the game. So many fun options and so easy to work it into the lore.
Merfolk

Mixed Ancestry: Tidekin/Faerie

Ancestry Features

Top Ability - Amphibious: You can breathe and move naturally underwater.
Bottom Ability - Wings: You can fly. While flying, you can mark a Stress after an adversary makes an attack against you to gain a +2 bonus to your Evasion against that attack.

Description
Merfolk were one of the most recent ancestries to emerge during the Age of Wonder. Deeply ingrained in terrana, they had the capacity to go further than any other ancestry beyond the edges of the map, into the Endless Ocean that surrounds Aurelia's creation. Where most ancestries with a strong link to terrana have long lifespans, the Merfolk instead possess bodies with incredible versatility - they are able to walk, fly, and swim with equal speed and grace. This trade off has left them with an average lifespan of just 80 years.

A little shorter than most species, Merfolk have an average height of 4-6ft, though their wing- and fin-span can make them appear much larger, especially when they come swooping down at their enemies. Having only recently begun to appear on the shores of Valloren at the time of the Magi Rebellion and Starfall, merfolk are a rarer sight than most ancestries, and it is entirely possible that Marrogate is the only sanctuary where they have been able to survive and thrive.

I love this - and super helpful given that I have two PCs with Natures Tongue at my table. 😅 I hadn't thought of designing some social adversaries for it, so this is a great way to make the ability more fun/worthwhile.

Dear TTRPG writers, fantasy/speculative fiction authors, and videogame designers, I am officially out of patience for 'main character has memory loss' as a plot device. It's both lazy and deeply offensive. Memory loss is a crippling, dehumanising medical condition, not a writer's tool. Pack it in.

If you're planning on running Journey to Horizon, here's a little narrative tip - say that the Vessel of Light needs to regularly rest in a sanctuary to recharge. The 'you can only long rest in sanctuaries because you need to resupply' thing doesn't really make sense alone, so this helps cement it.

### Rag Bag

**Ancestry:** Clank
**Community:** Loreborne
**Pronouns:** They/Them
**Construction Purpose:** Research

Prior to the construction of Hodge Podge, Rag Bag was very much 'the odd one' among the MLCs. About two hundred years ago, they commissioned an entirely new body to be created for them, which made their appearance and movement much more in line with a large, bulky Simiah than any other Clank in Marrogate. When asked why, Rag Bag said that they had read an excellent series of books that they found in the basement, featuring an 'Orangutan Librarian', and that Rag Bag wanted to "give cosplay a go". The other Clanks believed it to be a phase. It was not.

Rag Bag's distinct appearance has caused them to become the face of Marrogate Library, delighting both them and the Clanks who would prefer not to be disturbed by 'the meatbags'.
