Oh man that's not the half of it. She was elected as a Green Councillor then to the actual Green Party Council that makes policy, had a mad rant about supporting Iran and then I think she has now been suspended from the Greens for harassing people and accusing them of being transphobic.

Yes, agree. But it will definitely be a more resounding win now.

It's definitely going to cost them the bi-election now and probably by some margin.

I suppose him recognising now that he might have rein it in is at least admirable. But maybe it's a bit too late when you have the likes of Stats for Lefties running wild as a councillor.

Not really. You can still do things and spend locally but there has to be some sort of independent or 3rd auditor for accountability and transparency at a local level - which at present doesn't exist. The big beef everyone will have is if that auditor is controlled centrally by the treasury

You can't rely on elections alone though. People still need to be informed to make good choices. You need local journalism and some 3rd party oversight as well. You can't rely on the paid shite people get on their Facebook feed that happens at the moment!

I agree that she's awful but Farage and Lowe's lot especially with money at a local level would be horrific.

D Mac @donmac.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
True but it would be dependent on what they can interfere with and what powers they have to dictate any spending commitments without any recourse locally. I still believe there still has to be country wide standards and some sort of sensible rules so essential services are ring fenced.

But using Darren Grimes as an example. You know who he is and what he stands for. Give him 20 mil to build council houses - no Muslims, trans or green voters will have access to them, Richard Tice's cousin builds them for 18 mil and he keeps the rest. That's why you kind of need oversight

Well if that's the case then we're fucked. But, that's democracy. One person's hero and stand up guy is another person's devil incarnet.

That's the whole idea of having an independent auditors and clear, robust rules on transparency is totally there for "If the voters get it wrong" either by party or most likely terrible individuals representing any political party. Having no oversight at local level usually means bad things happen

D Mac @donmac.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Fair point, but there has to be some sort of accountability at a local level especially as local journalism has been gutted and there's no one in the community investigating and scrutinising bad actors. Lab's Joe Anderson in L'pool his dodgy deals only came to light through the Echo's investigation

D Mac @donmac.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
There has to be some sort of checks though. Would you hand over millions to be managed by Darren Grimes at Durham council or that 19 year old Reform Herbert in the midlands to build council houses?

Even in our 40s my wife and I loved the idea of retiring to Spain or France. We are now in our 50s and we thought that dream had been taken away from us, hopefully this might now be viable again!

It's virtually impossible for them to win it unless they can win back those 50 Lib Dem seats in the home counties and the only way they can do that is if they renounce Brexit and go for rejoin.

I will be highly intrigued about what the Tories will offer next week at their conference that will be anyway attractive? When most people think an extra 160 quid in their pay packet through tax cuts/smaller state isn't the trade off to the country being a shit hole where nothing works they think.

He properly shat the bed when he was pulled up on their human rights record when he was Mayor. It's so big and so damning the guilty charge that there's no way he can get them a pass politically on this and I hope he's telling them you're going to take the hit on this one lads.

I find this constant polling pretty tiresome and it only validates what has annoyed the UK public this week or it's positioned and steered to get the answer either the polling companies want or those who are paying for it.

He hasn't blocked me on here yet (don't get fed his posts anyway) and he hasn't gone as mad as Stats for Lefties or Zarah Sultana which is kind of a bonus I suppose.

Yep, owned by a state. They'll pull all those investment and job creation, national security leavers. Starmer would buckle, Tories wouldn't give a fuck and give them a pass, only hope that Burnham is the bitterest of blues whose team has already been shafted and believes they need to take the hit

I strongly believe she will lose her seat to the Tories or Lib Dems at the next GE. Her defecting to reform didn't go down well in Hampshire.

My 7 year old son and his friend thought it was a great idea to pick all the unripened figs from our tree last month 😩. However we have had an abundance of peppers and tomatoes from our allotment this summer!

What I am saying is who sets that means test cut off point and determines who is wealthy? Do you trust present and future governments to do this fairly or renege on it or they erode it over time? When it comes to universality it is usually overall the fairest, least expensive way to do it.
100
D Mac @donmac.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
You are also paying for pensions for people far less wealthy than yourself, you also pay for pip to people who have had life long disabilities and cancer treatment to someone who smoked all their lives. As a society you have to accept a level of universalism as drawing a line on who deserves it
100
D Mac @donmac.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
I am ok with paying for it as I am going to be paying for other people's pensions for another 18 years. I think overall as a society we don't pay enough tax and would rather have better public services and pensions for everyone now and in the future

D Mac @donmac.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
Yep, I am Gen X also. I was speaking to a friend who was a Tax expert for KPMG about this a year or two ago, he said X's might overall be a bit better equipped than millennials and gen z due to housing affordability and starting work during a period of growth.

Yep, pensioner poverty is still very much a thing. And there's going to be a huge reckoning in generations to come with pensioners with no assets, in the private rental market and little or no pension provision - loads will become destitute.

What gets my goat is even with the triple lock and the growing consensus in the media to curb it. But there's never any parallel conversation that we also have one of the most meagre state pensions in Europe.
