I also make posts about times when modern DK is said to be the same as classic. It's interesting stuff. As for the Direct, we can't know the intentions, but the implication was made whether they meant to or not, and that's notable.

It's certainly very curious that they chose DK and DK Jr., rather than Luigi, Yoshi, Bowser, Toad, or Koopa, who have direct counterparts. At different times, official sources have said different things, so all readings on the DK lineage are valid, but this choice does make an implication.
