#LunchtimeLP Bassist Oscar Pettiford was born 104 years ago today. Drum Suite by the Art Blakey Percussion Ensemble and the Jazz Messengers from 1957 features Oscar Pettiford on bass and on cello. Pettiford wrote the tune "Osalypso" on which he plays an amazing plucked solo on the cello. #jazzsky

#LunchtimeLP Bud Powell was born 102 years ago today. The album Sonny Stitt/ Bud Powell/ JJ Johnson recorded 1949 and 1950 for Prestige records. Powell only plays on slide one and JJ Johnson only plays on side two with John Lewis on piano. Curly Russell's on bass and Max Roach on drums. #jazzsky

#LunchtimeLP The Gifted Ones by Dizzy Gillespie and Count Basie with Ray Brown and Mickey Roker was recorded in 1977 for Pablo Records. And the music is fantastic, they found common ground in the blues. It has the feeling of an after hours jam session. Highly recommended. #jazzsky

Last Saturday Beverly and I heard the Will Kjeer trio at Berlin in Minneapolis with Charlie Lincoln, and Dave King playing Will's original music. It's one of the best live trio performances I've heard in a long time. For the last tune Laeton Olaleye sat in and it was the icing on the cake. #jazzsky

I heard the sad news that Cassandra Wilson passed away yesterday. I.loved her voice and her phrasing. I had her records but first heard her live at the now defunct Rossi's Blue Star room in Minneapolis in 2004, then again several years later at the Dakota. Blue Light 'til Dawn. #jazzsky

#LunchtimeLP Kenny Drew was born on this date in 1928. Drew moved to Europe in 1961. He recorded Everything I Love for Steeplechase records in Denmark in 1973. In 1976 it was released on Inner City records in the US. It's s an excellent jazz piano album that I wholeheartedly recommend. #jazzsky

#LunchtimeLP Yesterday was Brad Mehldau's 56th birthday. He recorded Alone Together with Lee Konitz and Charlie Haden live at the Jazz Bakery in LA in 1996. It was released in 2019 on vinyl. It's an extended exploration of melody and harmony featuring long takes of half a dozen standards. #jazzsky

#LunchtimeLP The Herbie Hancock Trio with Ron Carter and Tony Williams was recorded in 1977 and released in Japan that year. It wasn't released on LP in the US until 2020 when it was reissued for a limited release on Record Store Day. Mine is OG. Highly recommend, the sound is splendid #jazzsky

#LunchtimeLP It's a Breeze by Itzhak Perlman and André Previn with Jim Hall, Red Mitchell, and Shelly Mann was released in 1981 on the EMI Angel label. This is a pretty subdued set. Aside from a couple of nice solos by Jim Hall it sounds uninspired, to my ears at least. #jazzsky

#LunchtimeLP Miles in Tokyo was recorded live on this date in 1964 with Sam Rivers, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams. It was released in Japan in 1969 and did not appear in the US until this twofer was released in 1983. This is the only album that Sam Rivers recorded with Miles. #jazzsky
