also, my review of the Digital Circus Finale! it was a pretty interesting process to dissect my feelings on it, and while I didn't quite find it as satisfying as a lot of people did, I know I still had a valuable experience from it

I really can't put into words what doesn't quite work for me in this finale. And still, at the end, I can't call it a bad ending. While Gooseworx said this show was intended more as a slice of life drama than a mystery, I think that direction was how a lot of the emotional impact got undercut, at least for me.

I'll say I don't have quite the gripes a lot of people have with this. I don't mind that Caine comes back, I certainly do like character arcs that conclude internally once in a while. Most importantly, I don't think the movie being mainly about Jax was a mistake - if anything, it was the best way to go: in a world where the worst thing to happen is feeling unwelcome, Jax was the perfect angle to approach that idea. Additionally, most of the sequences involving his inner world were very well made and integrated.

However, all I could think about was semantics. With Jax instantly abstracting at the start and Pomni exploring in his "mind palace", I thought this was setup for trying to revert the abstraction process, only for the conclusion of that storyline to leave my interpretation frustratingly vague. Now, I know I'm far from a perfect audience, free of bias and assumptions when reading into a story, but - I think the reason I was left with this lingering question following the ending (so abstractions are irreversible, actually?) is that, using so much imagery to contextualize the concepts and story, often those images supplanted the intended meaning. Namely, the imagery of abstracting reflects corruption and imbalance rather than degradation or stasis, as one would assume of a self-destructive state. Essentially, without the understanding that Abstractions worked like undead all-consuming viruses of nihilism, instead of the rabid werewolf-like beasts their appearance and behavior suggests, actually made the stakes of the first half incredibly vague and unsatisfying for me. Were that image of an already-gone Jax instilled more clearly, I would've completely intuited what the first half was trying to accomplish, tying loose ends on Jax and Pomni's relationship. Unfortunately, that first experience left me nothing more than frustration on my first watch, and that can never be recovered. (And maybe I'm completely wrong about this interpretation, too! But it's the one that works for me)

On the other hand, what's left of this finale is a very straightforward resolution. Despite the characters not having much to say about the big reveal, which feels incredibly weak, the loose ends that were there were certainly tied up nicely enough. But that's all I ought say, is it? This ended nicely. And maybe that's what I should leave it at. I can only hope my specific problems were only mine, and that those who made the show came away with this finale what they wanted from it.
