Fans have every right to feel disappointed, upset, or downright discouraged after Boston’s 4–1 loss to the Ottawa Senators. It’s one thing when the effort is there — but what unfolded Monday night at TD Garden was something else entirely. Last season, when the Bruins hit their first rough patch, my immediate thought was that the schedule was to blame — the lack of practice time was clearly affecting their game, and that ultimately proved true.

Liam Pettersson – Djurgardens IF – SHL Djurgardens was shut out 4–0 by Farjestad BK on Thursday, with Pettersson skating on the third pair. As expected, he didn’t factor into the scoring, but he did register one shot on goal and logged 16:02 of ice time. His minutes are starting to climb, and he’s playing with noticeably more confidence as his role expands.

JJ Peterka and Jeremy Swayman celebrate the Bruins overtime win over the Winnipeg Jets. Photo by Boston Bruins The Boston Bruins edged the Winnipeg Jets 4–3 in overtime on Friday, but calling it a convincing effort would be generous. Still, style points don’t count in the standings — a win is a win; however it arrives. The first ten minutes of the opening frame had all the familiar warning signs — the kind that make you mutter, here we go again.

The Boston Bruins add Leland Mack to scouting staff. Photo by Prince George Cougars. The Bruins made a series of off‑ice adjustments this offseason, and you could make a strong case that several of them were driven by a renewed emphasis on player development. Earlier this week, the club announced updates to its Operations Staff along with new hires, signaling a continued push to strengthen the organization behind the scenes.

JJ Peterka scores his first of the season on opening night. The Boston Bruins opened their 2026–27 campaign with a statement, blanking the New York Rangers 3–0 on Tuesday night. There was plenty to like in the performance, but it’s worth keeping in mind the context — it was the Rangers, and Boston will face far stiffer tests as the schedule unfolds.

Opening night of the 2026–27 NHL season has arrived for the Boston Bruins, and the club’s 23‑man roster is officially locked in — with one notable caveat. Charlie McAvoy remains on the books despite serving a six‑game suspension, so he still counts toward the roster limit. Matthew Poitras, meanwhile, begins the year on season‑opening injured reserve, which removes him from that 23‑man tally until cleared to play, at which point a decision needs to be made.

Liam Pettersson – Djurgardens IF – U20 Nationell Djurgardens edged Luleå 2–1 on Saturday, but Pettersson wasn’t in the lineup — he was up with the SHL club instead. That group dropped a 3–2 overtime decision to Timra IK. Playing on the third pair, Pettersson didn’t record a point, finished even, and didn’t register a shot on goal, logging just 8:47 of ice time.

The 2026 preseason is officially in the books! Chris and Dom break ...

Bruins and Flyers set for puck drop in preseason action on Thursday. Yes, the Flyers iced a largely NHL‑ready lineup while the Bruins leaned heavily on AHL personnel. But preseason isn’t about the final score — it’s about tightening the roster picture. And on this night, a few bubble players strengthened their case, while others didn’t do nearly enough to keep themselves in the mix.

The Boston Bruins defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 5-1 in preseason action. Photo by Boston Bruins. The Boston Bruins rolled past the Philadelphia Flyers 5–1 on home ice Tuesday, moving to 2–0 in preseason play. But at this stage, the scoreboard is secondary. What matters now is assembling the strongest roster possible — and nights like this help clarify who’s pushing their way into the conversation.

Liam Pettersson – Djurgardens IF – U20 Nationell Pettersson was back in the lineup for Djurgardens on Saturday after missing one game but they went down in defeat to IF Bjorkloven by a score of 6-3. Pettersson, who was moved down to the second pairing, had an a powerplay assist but finished a minus-1 because of a shorthanded goal against as well.

Did Monday’s shootout win over the Capitals actually tell us anything meaningful about how the Bruins might shape their 2026–27 roster? It’s fair to ask — preseason results don’t always translate, but this one offered a few hints worth paying attention to. But remember, it has only been one game. Let’s look at the bubble players. You might be wondering why I’m starting with…

With AHL camps set to open on Monday, the Bruins are expected to begin trimming their roster on Sunday. The first wave of cuts may not be formally announced until Monday morning, but the organization is gearing up for its initial round of decisions as camp transitions into its next phase. Under the new CBA, training camp comes with a notable wrinkle: any player with 100 or more NHL games is limited to just two preseason appearances.

The Bruins’ rookies closed out the Prospects Challenge with a sweep, taking both games from the Sabres’ prospects to finish their 2 games in Buffalo unbeaten. And unless I misheard Ryan Johnston, it sounds like the event is slated to shift to Boston next year — a notable change if it holds. I’m going to look at a few players that took part.

Liam Pettersson – Djurgardens – U20 Nationell Djurgardens pushed its record to a perfect 3–0 on Wednesday with a 5–3 win over Brynas IF, keeping them atop the U20 Nationell Nodra Division. Pettersson picked up his first point of the season, assisting on the empty‑netter that sealed the victory. He finished the night at plus‑3 while logging top‑pair minutes. Djurgardens stayed perfect on Saturday, rallying for a 3–1 win over Timra IK.

Across the league, plenty of media voices are predicting a flurry of activity over the next two weeks as teams position themselves for the 2026–27 season. The Bruins are firmly in that mix, looking for any avenue to clear a roster logjam — particularly on the back end, where the congestion is most pronounced. I spoke with a couple of NHL folks from outside the organization to get their read on the situation — but before we get to that, we need to start with the…

Fraser Minten Signs Extension With The Bruins. Photo by Ethan Cairns/CP The Boston Bruins came out of the Labor Day weekend swinging — Captain’s Practice kicked off, the club unveiled its rookie camp roster for later this week, but the biggest news was announcing a seven‑year, $50.4‑million extension to Fraser Minten - set to begin with the 2027‑28 season. According to PuckPedia, here’s how the deal breaks down: Because he isn’t eligible for trade protection until his UFA years, the contract carries no restrictions until the 2032‑33 season, when a 16‑team no‑trade clause kicks in.

Liam Pettersson – Djurgardens IF – U20 Nationell Pettersson was back in the U20 Nationell with Djurgardens on Saturday as they skated to a 6-2 win over Sollentuna HC. Playing on the top pair, Pettersson had 5 SOG and was a plus-1 while playing in all situations. Pettersson was back in action on Saturday as Djurgardens blanked AIK 3-0. He was once again kept off the score sheet but played in all situations.

With the 2026–27 hockey season fast approaching, it’s time for our annual check‑in on what Bruins fans can realistically expect from the organization’s prospects skating outside the North American pro circuit. There’s always going to be a segment of the fan base that remains skeptical of the proprietary formula I use, and I completely understand why. Healthy doubt comes with the territory.

Rookie camps open across the NHL in just over a week, and they can’t arrive fast enough. Fans, writers, and podcasters alike are running on fumes at this point, bored out of their minds and desperate for something—anything—new to talk about. Even I’m starting to run low on material — and that’s not usually a problem for me. I can almost always find something current and relevant to dig into, but this stretch has tested even my well.

These lists have been tackled by plenty of others over the years, but I wanted to put my own stamp on one. I’ve had the benefit of watching most of these players firsthand, and for the few I haven’t, I dug in with some deep dives to round out the picture. Which brings me to number 7. I never had the chance to see Howie Morenz play, of course, but we share a hometown and his legacy is woven into the fabric of the place.

Philip Svedeback is set to become an unrestricted free agent. Photo by Providence College. August 15, 2026, represents an important deadline for NHL teams to sign drafted college players whose college eligibility has expired. For the Bruins, that deadline is particularly relevant when looking back at the organization’s 2020 and 2021 draft classes — two groups that have produced remarkably little NHL impact.

NHL training camps are a month away and the Boston Bruins are staring down a slate of unresolved questions — the kind that don’t just linger through September, but threaten to trail them well into the regular season. There’s no shortage of storylines in play, but a few stand out as the defining issues shaping the organization’s outlook. Let’s begin with the goaltending.

The 2026 Hlinka-Gretzky Cup is officially in the books, and Canada is back on top. After settling for bronze last summer, Canada put together a dominant week in Edmonton, finishing the tournament undefeated before dismantling the United States 8-1 in the gold-medal game. Landon DuPont recorded four points in the final, while Canada received contributions throughout its lineup. For the hockey world, however, the gold medal was only part of the story.

It feels like the 2026 draft just wrapped, yet the runway to 2027 is already opening. The scouting calendar kicks into gear on August 3, when the Hlinka‑Gretzky Cup gets underway at Rogers Place and the Downtown Community Arena in Edmonton. This year’s event could mark the end of a North American run, with the tournament expected to return exclusively to Czechia and Slovakia beginning in 2027 — restoring its traditional European footprint.

The Hlinka-Gretzky Cup will take place in Edmonton, Alberta and general managers will have more then scouting on their minds. Photo by Hockey Canada The NHL’s 2026 offseason has been one of the busiest and most consequential in recent memory. High-profile trades, market-resetting contracts and significant changes behind the bench and in front offices have reshaped the league heading into the new season.

On July 14, Bruins general manager Don Sweeney rolled out a series of off‑ice staff changes — but conspicuously absent from that announcement were two major vacancies. There was no update on who will replace Ryan Mougenel as head coach in Providence after his move to an assistant role with the Vancouver Canucks, nor any clarity on who will step in for…

Pavel Zacha enters the final year of his 4-year, $19 million deal. Photo by NHL.com Pavel Zacha enters 2024–25 coming off the most complete season of his career, and the timing couldn’t be more intriguing. He’s now in the final year of the four‑year, $19 million deal he signed in January 2023, and the question hanging over the Bruins’ offseason is as straightforward as it is polarizing: do you extend him, or do you move him while his value is at its peak.

We knew there would be a shuffling of the deck chairs with the Bruins when it comes to off ice staff. The Bruins have been busy backfilling their staff. Jay Leach’s departure for the head coaching job with the Hartford Wolf Pack opened a hole, ultimately filled by Matt McIlvane as an assistant coach to Marco Sturm. The departure of…

Alexander Nikishin could be on the move. Photo by NHL.com Back in 2021, after former Bruins winger Jake DeBrusk publicly requested a trade, chatter around the league spiked when a rumor surfaced suggesting Boston was preparing to ship DeBrusk — plus a draft sweetener — to Edmonton in exchange for Kailer Yamamoto. The report went viral and suggested that all the two sides were waiting for was a trade call.

Boston College winger Will Moore (51st overall, 2025) and North Dakota forward Cooper Simpson (79th overall, 2025) have earned invitations to Team USA’s 2026 World Junior Championship Showcase — a key summer proving ground that often serves as the first real sorting mechanism for the eventual WJC roster. Their selections underscore how both prospects have quickly climbed USA Hockey’s internal depth chart and positioned themselves for a legitimate run at December’s final roster.

The Boston Bruins entered free agency with needs at both the NHL and AHL level. Needs at the NHL level would be difficult to fill in free agency so they were also exploring the trade market. Here’s how the events played out: The day opened with a depth move, as the Bruins announced a one‑year, two‑way extension for goaltender Luke Cavallin…

The Bruins slid in just ahead of the June 29, 5:00 p.m. qualifying‑offer deadline, releasing their list of players who received tenders under the league’s updated salary structure. Under the new CBA framework, no qualifying offer can dip below $850,000, now the NHL’s minimum salary — an important baseline. Qualifying offers remain active until July 15, but that date isn’t a hard cutoff for club control.
