It turns out that not only can I reverse engineer a VCV Patch file, but I can reverse engineer a this.is.NOISE Gamma mini synth. An overview of the adventure is up at medium.com/@domesticmou...

Reverse Engineering a this.is.NOISE Gamma synth

But it an environment where everyone is paying the costs of verification, the cost reduction approach of not verifying the truth becomes optimal. Free riding on others paying the verification tax. Because high trust environment. And thus the cycle repeats.

There is an interesting result in game theory about grifters. A time of high trust results in the emergence of grifters. The presence of grifters results in a loss of trust, leading to people paying the costs of verification, which leads to the elimination of grifters.

I think this is useful, but in a different way to traditional educational content. Now the goal must be to figure out if the generated content is correct. This leads into a psychological concept called Locus of Control and how this interacts with a user’s perception of the AI generated content.

I’m a third of the way through, but I am already having thoughts. I’ve tried creating educational material using Matt Pocock’s /teach skill - www.aihero.dev/skills-teach - and the most interesting artifact is that the resulting content is probably correct, which is different to actually correct.

The funny part is the AI found an unpatched module: Floating / Unconnected Module: One module is present without patch cables: Fundamental::LFO (ID #1555539245045264, grid position X=137, Y=3 next to NYSTHI::Simpliciter). It can either be removed or wired to modulate sample start/speed parameters. 😂

Convert the Grammars into proper git submodules by domesticmouse · Pull Request #1 · glaforge/swifted
Both of the directories under Grammars should be git submodules. Now they are. Updated the README with instructions on how to populate said submodules. Yay, Antigravity. =)

The issue I hit was a fresh checkout didn’t build correctly. Antigravity fixed the build by marking one of the directories as a submodule. I’ll clean it up and do a proper PR later today. 😇

We have a phrase for code in production that no one understands. Technical debt. Now, debt is a valid thing to take on, but there is interest that is due on debt to maintain it, and at some point the principal may be required to be repaid in full.

Something we now have the option of is evaluating ideas by building them before deciding if they are viable. This is new. One of the fun things is this change destroys a lot of assumptions our industry was built upon.

Brett Morgan @domesticmouse.com · 17/04/2026
Yes, since distribution for software is now effectively free (software was distributed as a boxed product back in the day), software development is pure product R&D in manufacturing terms.
000
Brett Morgan @domesticmouse.com · 17/04/2026
One of the weird things is watching people who obviously have never done manufacturing use manufacturing idioms without understanding the implications. Call it Dunning Kruger Engineering. Simplest one, automation vs handmade. In the world of atoms, for building one offs, hand made is cheaper.

Brett Morgan @domesticmouse.com · 07/04/2026
I don’t understand why people are fantasising about dark factories as a future for software development. It’s almost like software engineers have no understanding of the reality of physical manufacturing. The cost of R&D to set up a dark factory is astronomical and makes no sense for one off items.

We are treating this change as if it is the first time we’ve seen automation as a society. It isn’t. It isn’t even the first time we’ve dealt with the fear that automation would eliminate all jobs. We have been dealing with the effects of automation since the invention of the steam engine.

I was trying to map the SOT-23 package across to the DIP8 layout so it matched the course materials. VSS is ground, so I had that. But the mistake was it was supposed to be GP0, GP1, GP2 and GP3. Not GP4. Sighs. Context: ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en...

I’ve seen a lot of products die before getting to PMF. But yes, getting from PMF to profitability is a yawning gap. And the techniques that got you to PMF are probably not the ones that will lock in ten year corp supply contracts.

I fully expect we see a lot more PMF hits as LLMs increase iteration velocity. It is increasing my ability to explore spaces I don’t fully understand yet, and I’m loving it. I just feel the need to bop the “this is the end of programming as a craft” meme.
