is a woman in this scenario who was sexually assaulted by a man a lot of people looked up to, and other people who have been assaulted dont owe him a shrug and a pat on the back because he feels shitty about it.

probably lose some views and money while he’s at it but the majority of the people who stop associating with him are doing so because it’s not comforting to know a person you associate yourself with sexually assaulted someone. i’m sure he feels regret, and clearly it was years ago, but there

working with you anymore, and you lose viewers if they aren’t comfortable watching you anymore. the conversation, as it often does, is refocusing in real time to talk about the assaulter’s feelings rather than the victims. the guy still has a channel, he lost creative connections and will

okay; you are assuming and presupposing that we are all gathering around to Deliver Punitive Justice to a youtuber, which is exactly what i’m saying we’re NOT doing. there is no punitive measure because justice in this space does not exist. you lose professional colleagues if they aren’t comfortable

to the grind and pumping out more video essays. his videos have been inspirational and thoughtful, but if victims don’t feel safe watching him after this, then who are they for? theyre for the people who can learn a creator sexually assaulted someone, and are willing to give a view & a buck anyways.

that could keep a man from saying his opinions in front of a camera. In the realm of sexual assault being taken seriously, we are in a constant state of taking steps forward and back, but i simply don’t believe the only way for Jacob Geller to “rehabilitate” is mass shrugging and going right back

handwaving creators who do shit like this while victims are scrutinized and bullied into silence by fans from every imaginable walk of life? Accountability feels like a dead concept these days, as if there’s any amount of verbal condemnation from folks online, many of whom are survivors themselves,

If we accept that a man who committed sexual violence can change, then is it that hard to imagine that maybe encouraging that man to go back into the spotlight and saying “at least you admitted it and were respectful to the victim” would be contradictory to that change? do we really want to keep

indirectly offers a modicum of social power. it puts you in the spotlight, gives your ideas influence, and allows you to make money while doing so. Every content creator has different values and goals, but these three things tend to be natural consequences of the work.

Instead, I would like to question why a Youtuber who assaulted a woman in a vulnerable position needs to keep gaining fans, money, and attention through content creation in the first place. It’s a job, yes, and chances are, he’ll keep doing it. But the job of being an online creator is one that

leveling with this article requires you to accept the idea that the worst thing that can happen to someone in the public eye is some form of content ostracism. As if losing your platform (which he won’t) is an act of deliberate social punishment that we carry out to sate our anger.

that being said, i think the victims identity is being protected (to my knowledge) which is, despite everything, the best case scenario for a lot of victims if their goal is to stay out of the public vitriol and discourse that tends to come about

i think having your assault be publicized is it’s own kind of hell, though, bc ur giving up control over how it’s shared. with that being said, going public to keep more people from getting hurt is noble, but the pressure to conduct yourself with dignity while discussing makes it pretty scary..
