If the food only arrives after the release word, you have taught him the waiting is the tax and the release is the prize. Pay during the wait instead, twice, three times, then release for free. Which part does yours find hard? #dogsofbluesky

Finish every session with the same signal, the same words, the same put-away. A dog that cannot tell when work is over never switches off, and what you read as tired is a dog still on duty. How does yours know you are done? #dogsofbluesky

When a cue stops working, the criteria moved, not the dog. Something got harder without you noticing, more distance, more noise, less food. Go back to the last version he got right and stay there a whole session. What changed the last time yours stalled? #dogsofbluesky

Dogs pick the spot with the most information, not the most comfort. Your head is where the breathing changes and the first movement comes from, so a dog who wants to know the second you wake sleeps there. Is he there from lights out, or does he move up at some point in the night?

Pay the moment he turns back toward you, not the third second of a tidy heel. The turn is the behaviour you actually need on a street; the position is decoration. Mark the head coming round and the rest follows on its own. When does yours look back? #dogsofbluesky

A yard he passes every day is a picture he has memorized, so a decoration is not a new object, it is the picture changing overnight. Barking less this year is not tolerance for inflatables, it is a dog who learned the season does this. Worse with the ones that move, or the still ones?

That line is the whole thing. Out there it is not one big refusal but a long run of small ones, and nothing tops him back up while the walk is still going. A few seconds of something he is allowed to do, a sniff or a scatter of food, buys back more than any correction.

Being good is not a state, it is work. Holding still while something interesting happens costs him something, and it runs out. What looks like a decision to stop is usually the budget ending. Does his run out faster at home, or out where there is more going on?

A recall that sometimes ends the fun and sometimes pays stops working. The word is not wearing out. The outcome is. Decide what that cue always buys him, and it holds even when something better is happening. What does yours think the word means? #dogsofbluesky

Deliver the food at the mat, the floor, the position you want. Not from your hand at your knee. Fed at the hand, he learns to face you and beg. Fed at the place, he learns the place. Where does your hand pay? #dogsofbluesky

Two short sessions a day beat one long one. Stop on a win, before the part where it gets worse. Most training goes backwards in the last three minutes, when the dog is tired and the human wants one more good rep. When do yours end? #dogsofbluesky

The chain starts at the keys, not the leash. By the time the lead is out he is three steps into a sequence he has run a thousand times. Whatever he reacts to first is where the training belongs. What does yours hear first? #dogsofbluesky

Every repetition makes the behaviour cheaper to run. Block the window, close the hallway, move the bin. Management is not giving up on training. It is what stops him practising against you between sessions. What does yours rehearse daily? #dogsofbluesky

That one is not the polite version. Settling in the open means she has stopped monitoring the room, and a dog still deciding about a house does not switch off where she can be seen. Choosing the spot herself is the part that matters. She is not being good there. She is off duty.

Count out loud and feed on three. Every time, the same count. He stops guessing what the other dog means and starts waiting for the number, which gives his attention somewhere to go while the trigger passes. Where do his eyes go now? #dogsofbluesky

Two weeks in, a lot of that is still the polite version. The real dog often turns up around week three, once she stops checking whether she is allowed. What you set while she is easy is what holds later. Does she settle on her own yet, or only when someone sits with her?

Then it is not tiredness, it is the sequence closing. He has the garden all day and does not switch off there. Walk, home, half an hour of fetch, done. The off switch sits on the end of the routine, not on the exercise. And on a wet day he closes it himself.

Chasing the dog teaches him to swallow fast. Put something better on the floor two steps away instead, and let him choose to drop it. The swap keeps his mouth safe and your hands out of it. What does yours steal most? #dogsofbluesky

A paw on the chair is early warning. He is not asking for contact, he is buying a second of notice before you stand, because the chair shifts before you do. Do the other four do it too, or is he the only one who tracks you like that?

That last bit changes it. Wary of all three means it was cats in general, with Boots the sharpest case. And she is not the cat he learned. She changed, he never got the update, because she only offers it by walking right up, which is the one distance where nothing goes in.

That settle is worth more than the hour before it. Switching off after arousal is a skill, not just tiredness, and plenty of dogs stay wired long after the toy is away. Does he come down like that after a walk too, or only after ball and tug?

Calm Dog Lab @dogs.mychoicevault.com · 21/09/2026
One bad second can outweigh eight years of good ones. Fear learning needs only one repetition and then resists being unlearned, so the good moments since never got a chance to add up. Does he keep that distance from other cats too, or only from Boots?

The calm you asked for is the easy one to reward. The settle that happens on its own is worth more, because it did not need you to start it. Three quiet marks in an evening beat one long stay. When does yours settle without being asked? #dogsofbluesky

Sniffing is work. Twenty minutes of it tires a dog more than an hour of walking to heel, because the nose does the kind of work the legs never do. The walk does not need to be longer, it needs to be slower. Does yours get to choose the route? #dogsofbluesky

There is a distance where your dog notices the other dog but still takes food. That line is the whole training plan. One step inside it and you are working. One step past it and you are only practicing the bark. Do you know where yours is? #dogsofbluesky

Stop counting whether your dog barked. Count the seconds until he looks back at you. Reacting is the nervous system doing its job. Recovery is the part that trains, and it is the number that actually moves. How long does yours take to come back? #dogsofbluesky

Behavior that repeats is getting paid. Usually one of three things: attention, distance, or a door that opens. Until you know which one, you are competing with a wage you cannot see. What does your dog's worst habit actually earn? #dogsofbluesky

What does your dog do first when another dog appears? Stare, bark, freeze, or lunge? That first reaction shows how close is too close and how much pressure the moment has. #dogtraining

Barking repeats because it changes the world, the person talks, the stranger leaves, the window closes. The dog learns noise has power, so the pattern gets stronger. #dogsofbluesky

To them it is not two languages, just twice the vocabulary. Same outcomes, two sets of sounds. The useful part is having a channel nobody else uses. In a crowd where everyone is saying sit and down, the French still belongs only to you.

The waiting at the door is already the training. They read the earliest link in the chain, keys or shoes, so the excitement starts long before the car. Asking for stillness before the leash goes on is where the whole sequence gets rewired. Sounds like you got there on your own.

Then they have built a vocabulary. Mouth for play and food, paw for the door. Each one got paid once and became the word for that thing. Most people never notice their dog invented a language, they only notice the word that hurts.

Calm Dog Lab @dogs.mychoicevault.com · 11/09/2026
That is the answer then. Both of those are requests, and both of them work, which is why the mouth stays in use. A dog uses whatever channel gets paid. Give it one that pays better, a nose touch or a sit at the cupboard, and the mouth stops being the shortest route.

Teething is the only one of the three that expires. Overarousal and a habit that still pays do not. A senior who learned at eight months that mouthing starts the game has no reason to stop. Is it more when they are wound up, or when they want you to start something?

Puppy biting is not bad manners. It is teething, overarousal, or a game that keeps getting paid with attention, so the biting keeps working. #dogsofbluesky
