ENCHIRIDION CATTORUM DOMESTICORUM: "When you espy your human preparing your repast, it is vital that you begin to meow loudly and piteously, and to increase continuously as you are capable, until the mess is placed before you. Otherwise they are liable to change their minds at the crucial moment."

Dude get the ricer! They cost like $3 and don’t take up that much space. And they make amazing mashed potatoes.

Of course. I, for one, reject "all men are mortal." How do you know? It's the major premise of a syllogism based on inductive reasoning. (There are 7 billion people alive right now who have never died.)

I think that if AI were to develop into a person-seeming entity that felt sadness at not being able to create art then I would want to call that entity a person. But since LLMs can already *say* they feel sadness (or any other damn thing) then the question is how do you test for "real" sadness?

Sorry I might have misunderstood — that would be a revenge story by a woman author, not about a woman character. Never mind!

Lately I've been allowing myself these little mini mental vacations. I sit somewhere quietly for a couple of minutes and imagine that there is no such thing as climate change, Tr*mp never happened, and there is no A.I. And I just relax fully for a few moments and bask in low-grade happiness.

Long read as an imperial novel, Kim also reflects Britain's changing ideas about Buddhist thought and spiritual practice.

By which I mean the protagonists’ proposal scene. (We see lots of ridiculous mid-novel proposals.)

I know that hindsight is 20/20, but speaking as someone who was once the over-the-transom fiction reader for one of our nation's most prestigious literary magazines, I would like to think that even if I didn't clock this as A.I. I still would have stopped reading after 3 paragraphs
