Just listened to this. Excellent. Thank you Doctors Training... credit to both the interviewers and the guest (Dr Baverstock). I found the advice regarding looking at "sweaty palm"conversation s as opportunities for strengthening connections and the reframing from "you did" to "I felt" valuable.

It's easy to get caught up in the stress of everyday life. The Christmas break has helped me reconnect with balance. I focused on time with family and friends, engaging in hobbies and reminding myself that making time for these things is key to our mental fitness & the ability to do our jobs well.

Let's talk differential attainment. Evidence shows that doctors from ethnic minority backgrounds, international medical graduates & those with disabilities or long-term conditions have disproportionally worse outcomes from training compared to their peers. Now is the time to address this.

The best evaluative feedback is when you seek it for yourself. I regularly have medical students in clinic. I often ask them to watch for if I interrupt a family / miss a cue / etc - it enables really helpful conversation.

If I am to have a feedback conversation where I am sharing some challenging info then I use advocacy with inquiry. But first I ask myself ‘Am I ready to have this conversation- in service of the receiver?’ And then - I ask them ‘ I need to have a conversation with you about xxx is now a good time?’

Many of us dislike confrontation. We put off difficult conversations, procrastinate, or sugarcoat what needs to be said. Learning to facilitate these conversations is an important skill to develop as a doctor. Tell me about a time you were given 'negative' feedback with kindness & support.
