Its October 1st. Crucial patient safeguards are not in place. GPCE has entered into formal dispute with the government. And rightly so ✊

GPs are really worried about the future. It's a challenging time when we're not even sure of the government's commitment to general practice at its best: well resourced family doctors embedded in their local communities, serving patients who know them and trust them.

Undervaluing public sector workers is a false economy. Quite apart from industrial action, or relocating to countries where they are better valued - it stops whole generations from taking these jobs seriously when considering which careers to start.

Whatever Labour's grand strategy is at the moment, it isn't working. Just look at those Reform figures - they didn't like Labour before, and they dislike them even more now.
Recent YouGov polling showing the PM's favourability has fallen with almost everyone (flatlined with Tories) in the last month.

The government are wrong if they see yesterday's results as a further reason to shift right. People are certainly disillusioned, and 2024 Labour voters are looking elsewhere - but mostly to the Greens or Lib Dems, not Reform. www.theguardian.com/news/ng-inte...

This report concludes that the:

coalition government’s reforms have resulted in greater marketisation of the NHS but that claims of mass privatisation are exaggerated

reforms have resulted in top-down reorganisation of the NHS and this has been distracting and damaging

new systems of governance and accountability resulting from the reforms are complex and confusing

absence of system leadership is increasingly problematic when the NHS needs to undertake major service changes

Care Act has created a legal framework for introducing a fairer system of funding of long-term care.

The agreement from Wes Streeting regarding a completely new GP contract in more than 20 years is historic. This isn't just about money for the next 12 months, it will shape general practice for a generation. Nye Bevan made many compromises in the run up to 1948. They were undeniably worth it.
"After so long a period of carping and bickering, and in spite of a largely hostile Press, the extent and speed with which [the NHS] has 'caught on' with the public is … remarkable." Nye Bevan. His sculpture in the National Portrait Gallery is pictured.

🤐 99% of dentists in the South West are not accepting new NHS patients 🤯 Nearly 60% of adults and 47% of children in Dorset haven't seen a dentist in the last year ✊ Local Labour MPs @tomhayesmp.bsky.social, Jess Toale, Neil Duncan-Jordan and Lloyd Hatton are clear: NHS dentistry must change

The NHS is in undoubtably safer hands with Labour than the Tory chaos that preceded them or the privatised alt-right nightmare of Reform. We must hold them to the promises, like today's, that got them into power. FullFact have produced a pledge tracker here: fullfact.org/government-t...

Strong message here from @drkatie.bsky.social, pushing back against the idea that GPs are, in the Health Secretary's words, 'coasting'. General Practice is under unprecedented pressure. It is vital that Wes Streeting backs the hard working doctors who keep the doors open and lights on.

NHS General Practice is dangerously under-resourced. To #rebuildGP we need: 📑 A plan to retain the GP workforce; 📈 Fair funding as part of the wider NHS; 🩺 Greater freedom and autonomy to do our jobs. More here: rebuildgp.co.uk

Hard agree. It's an existential threat to primary care. The Treasury needs to confirm this funding and move on. How can we restore the NHS from a position of GP bankruptcy?
