I've been writing mathematical documents in LaTeX for almost 40 years, and someone pointed me to ISO 31 just last week. I am having a bit of an existential crisis. I feel that Knuth and Lamport have led me astray.

Happy birthday to Robert J. Widlar, who would have been 88 today (Nov. 30).

To solve the temperature variation problem, Widlar invented the band-gap reference (Fig. 2), now used in voltage references everywhere, and National Semiconductor produced the 5V LM109 (Fig. 5), which is the grandfather of all three-terminal voltage regulators.

A year later, in 1970, he unveiled the solution in an ISSCC talk and a JSSC paper: a 3-terminal regular using a band-gap voltage reference. Widlar wrote, "The author has previously advanced arguments against including the pass transistor in an integrated-circuit regulator."
A useful on-card regulator must include everything within one package, including the series-pass transistor. The author has previously advanced arguments against including the pass trasistor in an integrated-circuit regulator [1]. First, there are no standard multilead power packages. Second, integrated circuits necessarily have a lower maximum operating temperature because they contain low-level circuitry. This means that an IC regulator needs a more massive heat sink. Third, the gross variations in chip temperature due to dissipation in the pass transistor worsen load and line regulation. However, these problem can be largely overcome using the new techniques, especially for the kind of regulator required by digital systems.

Widlar piled on more arguments... circuit interactions with the temperature gradient, leakage, and cost, are all bad.

In 1969, Bob Widlar wrote an article for EEE, "Designing Positive Voltage Regulators", arguing that fully integrated voltage regulators were impossible. The reasoning: the pass transistor kills you: it gets too hot, varying the chip temperature, and there are no standard IC power packages.
"Designing Positive Voltage Regulators" by Robert J. WidlarAlthough it is desirable to put as much of the regulator as possible on the IC chip, there are certain basic limitations. For one, it is not a good idea to put the series pass transistor on the chip. The power that must be dissipated in the pass transistor is too much for practical IC packages. Further, ICs must be rated at a lower maximum operating temperature than power transistors. This means that, even with a power package, a more-massive heat sink would be required if the pass transistor were included in the IC.

It's important to note here that our understanding of Kennedy's disbelief in germ theory isn't based on speculation or deduction; it's based on Kennedy's own words. He wrote an entire section on it in his 2021 book vilifying Fauci, titled The Real Anthony Fauci. The section is titled "Miasma vs. Germ Theory," in the chapter "The White Man's Burden."

TIL 2025 is not only a square, but it's a square of a triangular number, so it is also a sum of cubes.
In number theory, the sum of the first n cubes is the square of the nth triangular number.
