A fan of a certain age, or a greying geek if you will. I grew up with and still love old-school Sci-Fi and Telefantasy from the 1960s and '70s (some of that newfangled '80s stuff too). afanofacertainage.wordpress.com

THE TIME TUNNEL AT SIXTY
Sixty years ago today, on the evening of 9 September 1966, ABC viewers in America tuning in to a new hour-long adventure series would have watched two young scientists tumble, quite literally, onto the deck of a doomed ocean liner. The Time Tunnel had arrived. It would last barely seven months on the air, a single season of thirty episodes, and yet six decades on it remains fondly, stubbornly remembered by… me.

This unnerving Channel 4 continuity card has haunted me since 1983. It's very Terry Gilliam-ish. I half expected McGoohan's eyes to start darting about, his jaw to drop open, and his head to bounce off his shoulders and chase Rover around the screen! #PatrickMcGoohan #ThePrisoner #Channel4
A Channel 4 continuity slide promoting The Prisoner. The upper half of the image is black, with the title "THE PRISONER" in white capitals on the left and the colourful Channel 4 logo on the right. Below is a stylised collage showing Patrick McGoohan as Number Six, his face half in shadow, glaring towards the viewer from the lower right. Behind him is a simplified golden beach bordered by a white shoreline and bright blue sea. Rover, the Village's large (and apparently pink) security balloon, bounces across the sand, its path marked by a dashed white line. The bold colours and cut-out composition give the image a surreal, almost Terry Gilliam-like quality.

Batman: The Movie turns 60 today. Here's a look back at my first ever cinema trip, and why seeing Batman through the eyes of a four-year-old was a gift.

HOLY 60th ANNIVERSARY, BATMAN!
Batman the Movie premiered at the Paramount Theatre in Austin, Texas on July 30, 1966 (between the first and second seasons of the TV series). Here in the UK, Batman the Movie was released on 16th December 1966. I’m not entirely sure when the film reached the Fourways Cinema, our local picture house (or "The Pictures," as we called it), but I do recall queuing outside with my grandparents and gazing up at the poster promoting Batman's big-screen outing.

Two things that sci-fi fans of my vintage used to do that are now obsolete. One was holding a microphone up to the television's speaker to record an episode of Doctor Who or Star Trek. The other was taking photographs of the telly. #RetroSciFi #Telepics #TheTimeTunnel #LeeMeriwether #JamesDarren
I've been reflecting on how many of the things I used to do as a young sci-fi fan have become completely obsolete. Two things in particular spring to mind. One was holding a microphone up to the television speaker to make an audio recording of an episode of Doctor Who or Star Trek, while the other was taking telepics.

I think a lot of fans of my generation came up with the idea of recording television episodes quite independently. They'll regale you with tales of trying to get their families to keep quiet for an hour while they did so. I suspect I would eventually have come up with the idea of photographing the television myself, but my first telepics (or telesnaps, if you prefer) weren't my own. I bought them from a Star Trek fanzine in the late 1970s.

I did give it a try myself, but I'm a terrible photographer. You know all those blurred and shaky photos that invite you to believe that, if you squint really hard, they're of flying saucers, Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster? Well, those could have been taken by me.

Things improved when video recorders came along, because I could pause the picture and balance my camera on the arm of a chair, but the results still came out a bit rubbish. Thankfully, I know a couple of people who are much better photographers than I am. My poor friend Nodge (Nigel Rudyard) was press-ganged into taking photos of Logopolis for me, while later on my wife, eyes rolling, took photos of The Time Tunnel.

Of course, nowadays it's no trouble at all to grab screen captures from your favourite television series. And who needs to make an audio recording of an episode of Star Trek when you can watch it whenever you like?

But honestly, it was great fun!

THE TIME TUNNEL: ONE WAY TO THE MOON
On this day in 1969, Apollo 11 left its launch pad and hurled three men towards the Moon. Exactly one year earlier, the BBC had given us The Time Tunnel's own take on a journey to the Moon. One Way to the Moon was actually my first sighting of The Time Tunnel, having missed the first episode the week before (a fact that still infuriates me to this day).

"Batman Flies Again," proclaims this 1966 Look Westward cover. The mistaken idea that #Batman could fly became a problem for ITV. So #AdamWest filmed a special intro: "Remember kids, Batman can't fly... and neither can you!" Robin's reply, "Holy broken bones!" was echoed in playgrounds for years.

Black-and-white reward poster from Land of the Giants showing a tiny Earth person standing in the palm of a giant hand. The text offers a reward for information leading to the location and capture of the "Earth people and their spaceship", and instructs citizens to contact the Government Security Office or any policeman.

This is one of those super-niche posts that's probably of interest only to me.

I decided to recreate the reward poster from Land of the Giants. No idea why. Maybe I'll print a few off and hang them around town. I dunno.

Anyway, it was only when I set to work that I realised the giant's hand appears to have one finger too many. Honestly, how many times have I watched this episode and only just noticed that?

Well, okay, there's a small chance it's not a literal extra finger, but a slightly muddled line meant to suggest the curve of the palm. But now I've seen it, I can never unsee it.

I was sorely tempted to tweak the artwork, but in the end I decided to keep my recreation authentic to the original. Extra finger and all.

THE GIANTS IS COMING! (And That’s No Mistake)
Several decades ago, in the 1990s, a friend in the States sent me a badge. Well, here in the UK we'd call it a badge; in the States, it's a button or a pin. As you can see from the image above, the badge is a promotional item intended to publicise Land of the Giants back in the 1960s. My friend spotted the badge (pin, button, whatever) on top of a pile of other badges at a yard sale and immediately thought of me.

A brightly coloured vintage Wall’s ice cream advertising banner from the 1960s, promoting Sky Ray lollies and free Doctor Who adventure cards. The pennant-shaped sign has a deep blue background with bold lime green, red, white and yellow graphics. Three rocket-shaped ice lollies streak across the image, leaving white trails behind them. A large circular burst at the lower right advertises “FREE Dr. WHO adventure cards!” in black lettering on an orange disc. The Wall’s logo appears at the top left, while large text reads “NEW! SKY RAY lolly!” A green circle at the bottom left displays the pre-decimal price “6D”.
