Also look at Lubuntu, I think it's even smaller than Xubuntu.

It depends? Try Ubuntu, it might be good for you. Also look at Mint, and System76 COSMIC. How much ram does your little laptop have? If it's 4 or 8GB, consider Xubuntu.

Local Send on Mac, Linux and presumably Windows? IDK about W. it works great from my iOS to my Linux laptop, between Mac’s when airdrop is acting up, etc.

If you can boot Ubuntu from the USB, consider replacing the internal drive. The drive firmware is probably borked, not the entire laptop.

docthunder09.bsky.social @docthunder09.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
Mint might be heavy for 8gb? I mean, try it, but don't expect the world. Also look at Xubuntu. Modern web browsers consume the most memory, so closing unused tabs will keep your laptop "fast". Could you put more ram in, or is it soldered?

What’s your old laptop rocking if you think 16gb would be better? 8gb? You should try Xubuntu 26.04 xubuntu.org/release/26.04/

I always try to avoid PPAs just because of that. Good luck with your update and report back how it worked out. My advice is to not panic if it looks like it’s going sideways. My 2011 iMac needed to have the drive encrypted for it to work but my 2015 MacBook Pro didn’t?

I am excited you will do the update. Make a copy of all your important files in case it doesn’t go smoothly.

If this is the level of question? Mint. Mint is a good Linux OS, it will do a majority of what you want, it’s already based on Debian. It even looks a bit like windows.

Starshine, reach into your pc and remove the windows boot drive, put a new blank boot drive in there to put Linux on. If you hate Linux or just want to go back to windows, just swap drives again.

Tell us more about your potato? How big is the drive, how much ram, more specs about the CPU? Some linux distros are lightweight, some are ready to give your potato a bit more sour cream & chives :)

docthunder09.bsky.social @docthunder09.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
Oh yeah, windows doesn’t like to play with any other OSs. If you keep the boot drives separate, you shouldn’t have any trouble.
000
docthunder09.bsky.social @docthunder09.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
Well, you could disconnect your desktop PC's boot drive and put a new/used boot drive in and try out Linux without messing up your Windows drive. No commitment. Try an easy one first, something compatible with your GPU, like system76.com/pop/download/ and flathub.org/en

There was an entire series of people on youtube spray painting their cases exciting racecar colours. One guy pulled a case apart to make a server, and spray painted it bright yellow.

BUT! Installing a new Linux OS onto your old laptop means you will lose all the information currently on your laptop. Make copies of all the stuff on your laptop: photos, music, documents, etc. OR: remove the boot drive and put in a new one, in case you change your mind.

Ruth, try it before you buy it. Many linux versions allow you to burn Linux as a removable OS onto a USB without touching your current Windows OS. Look at a few options like linuxmint.com/download.php or system76.com/pop/download/ and use etcher.balena.io to make your installer.

That’s the current deal. Gaming is much better on Linux, some people even prefer it. Try it out before you wipe Windows, preferably on a separate drive.

Advice to you: remove the Windows Drive or at least disconnect it while you install Linux, so it is a discrete drive. You don't want to accidentally connect the two drives in any manner. Choose which drive to boot into when you turn the PC back on every time.

Money aside, if you want all that software running nicely on Linux, you want at least 16GB ram. I agree, a used Thinkpad with 16GB DDR3 and at least a 256GB boot drive of some sort would be good to start with. Get an external drive to store your art/OBS recordings.

I read unflipped manga comics, and I constantly get caught on balloon order. Clear balloon placement is very important. Lettering is a weird construct of comics, and if you have to stop and think about it, you’ve lost the reader. There’s no balloon placement in cartoons.
