Some readers will hopefully find it informative, while others may not like what I have to say. My first post is about #leptin in anorexia. Why it matters and what the latest research says. Let me know what you think. Link👇 Thank you to @anorexiamyths.bsky.social for reviewing a draft.

Have decided to be brave and start sharing my thoughts on #anorexia and other #eatingdisorders and #appetite research in a #blog. It's unconventional, possibly different from anything you will have read about anorexia before and, being honest, it will be marmite.

In my favourite place abroad - #greece. Love Μπάμιες (okra) - never seen them grow before. On these plants. Who knew? I remember you sprinkle them with vinegar and leave in the sun to stop them being slimy. Not really compatible with UK weather.

First results from Our Future Health and not entirely surprising. I suspect that the root cause of a significant proportion of mental health conditions resides in the immune system. #immunopsychiatry #psychiatry mentalhealth.bmj.com/content/28/1...

The COVID pandemic AGED your brain by 5.5 months, on average, according to a new study. That... sounds bad. But what does "brain age" mean? And what does a brain that is aging more rapidly mean to you? Using what's left of my brain to break down this new study. (1/N)

This one is particularly interesting, because the patient had normal baseline leptin levels to start with, but increasing these still led to improvements. Note alleviation of the symptoms of #OCD and self-harm. Route to OCD in starvation is well-described. #eatingdisorders

Balancing feeding with fear. The neurocircuits and neurons that balance nutritional needs with danger are interconnected and in some cases, one and the same. (e.g. POMC) No wonder feeding problems are associated with anxiety.

My assumption would be that digestive bitters, by raising GLP-1 and CCK, would lower gastric emptying and gut motility further, causing more bloating, discomfort and constipation. Is my assumption wrong and are they helpful? Review study of GI tract bitter receptors and GI hormones👇

Has anyone personal or professional experience of using #digestivebitters to ease gastrointestinal discomfort in #anorexia? Some say they are helpful, but I wonder if they might cause more discomfort through raised #GLP1 and CCK? (Both probably already raised in anorexia.)
