Hmm. It seems they recently added language to make registration with the Selective Service automatic.

Beginning on December 18, 2026, the requirement for male U.S. residents ages 18 through 25 to register themselves with the Selective Service System will be replaced with a requirement for the Selective Service System to register them
"automatically" on the basis of other federal government databases. This results from a provision of the Fiscal Year 2026 National Defense Authorization Act. [4] [5]

I’m fascinated by the left/right dichotomy of Starship Troopers memes. The left adopted “I’m doing my part!“ while the right signaled its eagerness to do fascism by posting “Would you like to know more?” everywhere.

Sorry, half the alt text got cut off. The second half is here.

To advance opportunity through education across our entire system. Whether it’s our health sciences university training pharmacists, nurses, and physicians to serve rural communities, our K–12 partnerships through Extension, our Pathways programs that create new entry points into WSU, or our Global Campus serving students around the world, we work to expand educational opportunity as a public trust, not a private commodity.
To serve as an engine of innovation and practical research. From advanced energy solutions and sustainable agriculture to improving mental and behavioral health across the Northwest, WSU researchers are tackling problems that matter, with an emphasis on deep community engagement and real-world applications.
To lead with integrity — honest about the challenges we face, and bold in forging the future our students and state deserve. Whether we’re navigating complex financial realities or redefining the role of public universities in a polarized time, we do so transparently and with a deep sense of responsibility.
This is a time to carry forward both resolve and innovative thinking with a healthy dose of Cougar pride. Washington State University will meet this moment — together — guided by the values that have defined us for 135 years: teaching, research, service, excellence, community, and the public good.

Thank you for the work you do, every day, to bring these commitments to life.

Sincerely,

ELIZABETH R. CANTWELL
President, WSU system

Out of frustration, a friend just shared this letter with me. It’s from the new Washington State University President, Elizabeth R. Cantwell. They said it’s a nice sentiment, but they don’t see anywhere what policies are actually being implemented. How does WSU intend to protect students?

OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT
Leading with purpose

May 5, 2025

Dear WSU colleagues, students and friends,

We know that Washington State University is not like the Ivies, private universities, and the large, legacy institutions on the East Coast. Our history, mission, and the communities we serve define our distinct character and provide accessible touchpoints through our extensions and multiple campuses.

We were built not for prestige or exclusivity, but for purpose. Our founding land-grant mission — to extend opportunity, to bring discovery and learning to every corner of our state, and to do so with courage, clarity, and a focus on future good — remains unchanged. If anything, it is more vital today than ever before.

That purpose drives us as we grow enrollment across the WSU system, offering a residential flagship experience in Pullman and flexible education options in Everett, Spokane, Tri‑Cities, Vancouver, and through our Global Campus. It shapes how we think about access — not just who we admit, but how we support students to thrive. It informs our investments in Native American programs and partnerships, our deep ties to rural Washington, and our commitment to serving first-generation college students, veterans, working adults, and those who have historically been left behind.

At WSU, we are unwavering in our commitments:

To support, protect, and engage our students — not only through world-class instruction, but through hands‑on research opportunities, mentorship, student wellness initiatives, and co‑curricular experiences that prepare them to lead in a world of uncertainty and promise.
To uphold the principles of academic freedom and free expression, grounded in mutual respect. We believe that rigorous inquiry and open debate are essential to knowledge creation and public trust. Our faculty and students must be able to ask hard questions — and listen deeply to varied perspectives — in order to meet the complexity of today’s challenges.
To advance opportun…

I struggle to understand how Starship Troopers (1997), an explicitly antifascist movie that eventually spawned several pretty good memes, managed to keep exactly one meme tied to far-right culture (“Would You Like to Know More?”). It’s a phrase I’ve only seen used by Alex Jones and right-wing spaces

Sweet summer child saying “I’m doing my part too!” And everyone laughs because they know he is going to be chopped in half by a bug one day.

Neil Patrick Harris doing a Vulcan mind meld on the Brain Bug. He is about to say “It’s afraid!” which is treated as cause for celebration, but tragically shows that these creatures have more to them than we are willing to understand.

Another option is a saw made of Kevlar rope. They can cut through a lot of materials, surprisingly. And they can be disguised as shoelaces or bracelets. The common practice is to secure the saw around your feet and through the zipties so you can use your feet to do the sawing motion.

Doctor Bugs, PhD 🐝 @docmcbuggins.bsky.social · 23/02/2025

Zipties are more likely. Cheap, strong, can buy in bulk. These can be disabled with a small shim forced into the locking mechanism, but cutting is easier. Pictured is a small ceramic blade that you can find at several stores online.

I won't give a tutorial here but just know you can bend a hair pin to act as a handcuff pick. I've done it and it takes a bit of practice but within an hour I was able to do this.

Doctor Bugs, PhD 🐝 @docmcbuggins.bsky.social · 23/02/2025

There are many small keys and shims you can carry to escape handcuffs. Think about where you could carry them that you would be able to access if your hands were behind your back. I'm not going to talk much about handcuff shims because if the person uses them right a shim doesn't work.

100

Doctor Bugs, PhD 🐝 @docmcbuggins.bsky.social · 23/02/2025

Handcuffs have a double-lock function which can be disabled with a normal key or pick, but a handcuff shim won't be able to open them. In the above diagram you can see the double lock bar. You have to turn the key in the opposite direction first to undo the double lock, then turn it normally to open

You're probably less likely to encounter handcuffs, especially in an illegal detention scenario. But the info is out there and the stuff about zipties and rope won't apply so I'll mention it first. It's good to know: handcuffs are standardized and use virtually the same key across North America.

This is the source of the Trump "Krasnov" story. There have been earlier pieces reporting on Trump's ties to Russia as well.

Facebook post by Alnur Mussayev (translated to English)

" In 1987, I worked in the 6th Department of the KGB of the USSR in Moscow. The most important area of work of the 6th Department was the acquisition of spies and sources of information from among businessmen of capitalist countries. It was in that year that our Department recruited the 40-year-old businessman from the USA, Donald Trump, nicknamed "Krasnov". "

And here is the exact part he says it. April is so soon. I don't know if this is the actual plan, but there is a "Playbook" provided by Project 2025. It is unpublished, but Trump has it. The Playbook outlines the first 180 days. If their plan is to follow Yarvin, that's where it'd be written down.
