Absolutely! The economic problems of the '70s and early '80s started when gas prices soared in response to the arab oil embargo. That economic malaise contributed to Jimmy Carter being elected.

Iran recently offered to allow the US to inspect its nuclear sites if the US ends the billions of dollars' worth of sanctions it has put on Iran. We had that when Orange took office in 2017, but he backed out because Obama did it. We also had an open Hormuz & no bombing of our Middle East assets.

Amazingly, the only other two species of Yersinia (enterocolitica & pseudotuberculosis) 48 years ago are still the same & only two today! They both cause yersiniosis, a GI disorder. All three species are sensitive to many antibiotics, so outbreaks don’t go far in countries with good medical care.

It’s been 48 years since my last pathogenic microbiology class, so I had to consult Google: Whether a patient develops bubonic, pneumonic, or septicemic plague depends almost entirely on the route of infection & how the bacteria enter the body, rather than by a specific substrain of Y. pestis.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard someone sing with a theremin before. It’s risky, because playing a theremin in tune is very difficult. The player in the clip is great. Playing a string instrument or a trombone in tune without frets or keys is tough enough, but a theremin is at another level.

Sadly, I think gay bars are being replaced by hook-up apps and the fact that younger gays have mostly lived on their phone and not in person. As happened with lesbian bars, gay male bars may have become financially unsustainable without letting the hets in. ☹️

I haven’t been able to go to loud bars or clubs for decades because of my hearing problems. One is termed “loudness recruitment” which means I can’t tolerate loud sounds that others have no problem with. That plus sensorineural hearing loss, so I can’t understand what people are saying.

That reminded me that when I was a postdoc, I saw a letter at the top of a trash can from an editor admonishing a senior colleague for ignoring two previous late notices about his contribution to a book. That sent a bad signal that it was OK to be late with things like that. It gets passed down!

Yes, the Founders anticipated what they had learned about European monarchs, but they never envisioned a Trump. If they had, the DOJ would never have been controlled by the Executive branch. Also, some Founders were slaveholders, so there's racial hypocrisy built into the system.
