Cooper and his pal Cedric on the Marginal Way in Ogunquit.
Two dogs, one large and one small, are sitting on a rocky beach. The large dog has black, white, and brown fur, while the small dog has white fur. The ocean and a rocky shoreline are visible in the background under a sunset sky.

What I find comforting about this is just that even with more money, and more people, and more talent, and more everything, Apple can screw up simple things just like the rest of us.

I’m in the process of moving a large NAS (Synology 2415+) to a replacement NAS (2422+). Normally, this’d be easy: you’d just install the disks. But my old NAS uses ext4, and I wanted to switch to btrfs on the new NAS. Unlike in macOS, when we all had the conversion from HFS+ to APFS happen […]

I’m not sure this is really USB’s fault, but: - On a Mac mini M4 (base model), there are three Thunderbolt 4 ports on the back, and some USB 3 ports on the front. - If you use a Thunderbolt 4 10G ethernet adapter that is also USB compatible (like those based on the Realtek RTL8159 chipset) […]

The fact that the top layer is easily and inexpensively replaced on the iPhone Duo says to me that it’s quite soft and the matte finish is not durable. Probably even worse if you start using a pen with it…

As an FYI, if you’ve made a bootable backup, SuperDuper! 4 *does* copy the SystemKeys, even if SIP is on. It can’t update them with Smart Update, but they’re appropriately preserved. #SuperDuper

Basically a loudness meter for a song by Velvet that shows it’s full saturation/volume all the way.

@octothorpe He was clearly trying to push the form forward—or at least *his* form—but I thought it didn’t really work as much other than an academic exercise. Which is fine, as far as it goes. The Pillow Book kind of did the same thing, but more successfully.

@octothorpe Anyway, his run from the shorts all the way to Cook/Thief is pretty remarkable. I didn’t especially like Prospero’s Books, thought The Baby of Macon was kind of odious, and The Pillow Book was better…but at that point I’d tired a bit of his clear distaste for his audience (and for […]

@octothorpe I was introduced to Greenaway in a college semiotics course; we spent quite a lot of time on The Falls and A Walk Through H, before he released his first theatrical film. (If you like Greenaway, all his shorts are worth a view—I think BFI released them on DVD at one point.)

I *know* it was made in 1989 and about Thatcherite England (and *what* a movie to see with an audience, back in the day), but is there a more perfect movie that comments on the times we find ourselves in than The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover? It could not be more prescient & […]

Speaking of “The More You Know™️”: in a default Synology configuration, Samba (or, there, synosamba) actually has code in to not return files or folders named CON, PRN, AUX, NUL, COM1–COM9 and LPT1–LPT9. Legacy humans such as I can guess why. So, while you can create them, and they’re stored […]

It’s kind of astounding that, on a headless server, ~/Library/Containers/com.apple/photos.InageConversionService/Data/tmp has 175606 UUID-named entries in it, all of which seem to folders, and one of which is “TemporaryItems”…but at least that’s empty. Actually, they all seem to be. What the heck?

Well, tomorrow, Weber—who bought June from Amazon, who acquired June itself—shuts down June’s servers, for no good reason. If you have one, make sure to connect it to the network and update the firmware before then. Fortunately, if you *do* update your June firmware, it won’t affect how the […]

@timo FYI, I spent the day coming up with an algorithm that can manage the retimings on the fly even with parallel operation queues that are draining at different rates, looking ahead, etc, so I don't think this will be an issue in the next version. I have more test cases to go through to make […]

@timo Fair enough. The big challenge here is that operations that occur in a folder can change the folder's time (and the parent folders time). But the operations themselves don't necessarily happen in an order that lends itself to mid-run fixing…there are a bunch of operation queues running […]
