Update: The 11th Circuit denied Lee's request for a stay of execution, saying that "Lee has not shown a substantial likelihood that the district court abused its discretion in applying the estoppel doctrines" and that Alabama is not currently prepared to carry out firing squad executions.

Lee's lawyers had asked a court to prevent him from being executed by lethal injection. Last week, District Judge Emily C. Marks denied that request, saying those legal arguments belonged in state court.

The Vieques hospital was destroyed by Hurricane Maria in 2017. The locals had incredibly little access to healthcare for years. The facility was *just* completed in Dec. Meanwhile, tourists have flocked to the island+tech guys have bought up land on the island while locals still lack basic services
