Now just wantonly killing a citizen or noncitizen is of course illegal.

This shit again. The citizen in question was in Al Qaeda and actively engaged in war. There’s no magic legal US citizen shield against military action under those circumstances. There wasn’t when some U.S. citizens took up arms with the Axis powers in WWII either.

Xi’an was one of the coolest and yummiest places I visited in China.

Electricity into large blocks of text anyway.

Imagine also if we hadn’t scrapped many of the tax incentives from the Inflation Reduction Act that made that a no brainer.

But even given that, there are (or should be) some norms for when to take assertions seriously. Otherwise we are just doing intellectual wankery.

Dave Lundeen @dmlundeen.bsky.social · 4h
Right. For almost nothing except math and other systems where we agree on a set of axioms.

A lot is going on here with the implicit epistemic norms of whom should have the burden to produce prima facie credible evidence to support an assertion.

Most of the time it doesn’t! But sometimes.

Doing this on Bluesky is going to bring out more heat than light.

Large Language Models are not conscious is a much weaker claim that the one you are shorthanding and the claim that they are (or could be) requires much stronger evidence and frankly engagement with the literature than this whole discussion shows.

Don’t Look Up was pretty good. Even though it involved David Sirota, who is not pretty good.

Lots of families and friends on the other side of the pond wrestling with this and Trump.

Here in Nashville I saw a cybertruck with matte black camo details reverse into an angled parking space (dick move) and the guy who stepped out I swear to god looked like Dax Shepard’s character from Idiocracy.

Yeah we agree about that. If I had my druthers we’d be pretty open borders, but I recognize that I’m very far off the median on that. I don’t think people who want to deport violent criminal undocumented people are cruel, but there’s a very small number of people who fit that description.
010
Dave Lundeen @dmlundeen.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
Well sure, in a literal IQ sense this will always be true by definition. But I don’t think that means insulting them is productive. “Dumb” is a slur as much as what you were alluding to re trans people.

Dave Lundeen @dmlundeen.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
Pure of heart, no. But generally not gratuitously cruel.

A lot of voters in the coalition just want a decent life, and are generally kind but don’t like to be shocked by rapid social change or spoken to like they are rubes.
000
Dave Lundeen @dmlundeen.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
I’m not so sure about the trans sports thing and median (any) voters, that issue I’m somewhat convinced is a manufactured consultant belief. Agree about the rest, though I think it’s unnecessarily condescending to think of them as dumb.

I dunno man, I’ve worked on Democratic campaigns and talked to these folks. I’m not saying I have their pulse perfect, but the median voter in the coalition I do not think is nearly as left wing as you appear to believe. Newsom is right wing only by comparison to like Chesa Boudin.

Dave Lundeen @dmlundeen.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
Respectfully, this is a very Bluesky view of the world.

Dave Lundeen @dmlundeen.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
And to those people Newsom is an out there Cali liberal, left on social stuff, left on environment stuff, palling around with those Silicon Valley guys who are (correctly, in the case of tech workers as opposed to their broligarch bosses) perceived as left of center.

Probably actually a Midwesterner whose family built cars.

He certainly is ambitious.

Dave Lundeen @dmlundeen.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
I don’t think this can be substantiated.
000
Dave Lundeen @dmlundeen.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
Newsom kicked his ass in that debate.
100
Dave Lundeen @dmlundeen.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
I can’t see the OP, some blocker or blockee, but Newsom’s problem in a general election was always going to be that he’s too liberal.
000
Dave Lundeen @dmlundeen.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
Newsom by the standards of how people not on Bluesky (so most people) think of politics is not a centrist. Well to the left of the median Democrat.

Will is a very smart person but unfortunately is revealing himself to be a sophomoric philistine on this topic. Many such cases.

Absurd claim.

Yeah, chatGPT can’t do arithmetic with the precision of a calculator, so there’s a difference.
000
Dave Lundeen @dmlundeen.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
Between that and the philosophical philistinism and totally unearned intellectual bullying of the uncritical AI boosters and you’ve got a whole lot of dumb.

Thinking.
000
Dave Lundeen @dmlundeen.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
But it isn’t doing that. It’s doing something different that people are calling “that”.

My uncle was a career family lawyer-referred to weddings as “inventory”
020
Dave Lundeen @dmlundeen.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
There’s a legal inventory pipeline or lifecycle in some practice areas.

He already had his criminal trials (completed and dismissed from the calendar) bro. Those options are not on the table, they are imaginary.

Dave Lundeen @dmlundeen.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
If you have to say “incredibly” before “clear” in a legal argument, you’re losing.
000
Dave Lundeen @dmlundeen.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
How has simple Constitutional logic served us in dealing with Trump thus far; there’s no court in the country that will take this argument seriously-it’s obscene but non justiciable and it’s why who we elect matters more than any of these other legalisms; it all depends on good faith.
100
Dave Lundeen @dmlundeen.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
All this other stuff is just noise about legal theories that don’t work outside of a seminar paper or worse, collapse into left authoritarianism and show trials.
000
Dave Lundeen @dmlundeen.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
Yes that is actually true. 2024 was the check, and American voters fucked it up. Do better next time.

He can literally pardon himself for anything federal he did in the interregnum, regardless of what SCOTUS said in either of those cases and there’s not a damn thing we can do about it.
100
Dave Lundeen @dmlundeen.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
The pardon power is an explicit legal doctrine, and yes, I agree Trump v US and Trump v Anderson are both wrong-and that we are not gonna get him by criminal prosecution, that’s just silly and even petty.

Love it when Bluesky folks invent quotes and positions. It’s so enlightening. Don’t elect Donald Trump and people like him is actually the answer. If you do, nothing else really matters. Presidents are effectively immune from accountability if a supermajority of the Senate refuses to convict them.
