I too wish I lived in a world of chivalrous students and virtuous virgins. I don't. I live in the sometimes sad, often mean real world and I should treat it accordingly. BTW she was not heavily outnumbered by men. She was heavily outnumbered by those men. The difference is more than grammatical.

Don't know why this game is going ahead. Playing against colonisers responsible for millions of Irish deaths and countless other millions globally. It's a disgrace #StopTheGame2

Unlike Early et al. The FAI lives in the real world the rest of us live in and had to hold its nose and get on with it. Just as 93.5% Muslim Kosovo did last week when they played Israel. By the way does anyone know if SIPTU has given RTE permission to cover Sunday's game in full?

The fact is that no sporting federation in the world has blacklisted Israel from any sport. Irish athletes competed against Israeli athletes during the summer. Irish boxers competed in boxing tournaments where Israeli also competed. The FAI failed, regrettably, to convince UEFA to boycott Israel.

Poor 'ol Ken. What a rambling, gish gallop piece of claptrap! The war did not force the Ireland Israel game from Dublin. It was a rag tag bunch of cancellation-culture-lefties who, thankfully, failed in their attempt to railroad the public, the FAI and Irish players into abandoning the game.

Anyone know if SIPTU is allowing RTE cover Sunday's match?

Do you know if SIPTU have given RTE permission to cover Sunday's game? Looking forward to a match without these Stop The Game tossers in attendance.

It's not the dying who are afraid of death, it's the living. And if you are afraid of death, you are afraid of life.

I think if you are going to focus on the meaning of death, it would be good to talk to those who are dying. It seems the culture now is very reluctant to face reality (e.g. the longevity fetish etc).

A very large part of life is holding your nose and getting on with it and beating up on some footballers is a pathetic response to our own powerlessness.

The Great Pontificator gets it right. However, Ireland is a 2 bit player in this. We don't live in a world of good and evil and it's utterly simplistic to think so. We do live in a world of messy real-politik and all the heartfelt umbrage in the world isn't going to change that.

The Irish Times speaks for everyone? The only cowards in this debacle are the Earlys and Cooneys of the world who, with no skin in the game, sanctimoniusly lecture us on right and wrong. As for the long term consequences? None. The lynch mobs will find someone else to bully, no doubt.

What an idiot. I would have thought squad unity was the one thing that stood out. The only infamy here is the lynch mob that has been baiting the team for the last few days. There's a lack of leadership alright and it ain't the FAI.

"it will be noted"? By who? Who the f**K appointed PBPS and Ruth Coppinger the moral guardians of Irish football and footballers. As dictatorial as the Israeli government.

Sebastien Junger? Ernst Junger died in the 90s, I think.

Did Junger really dodge death so many times? He must have, mustn't he? Look at all the medals he was awarded! Sometimes you just have to accept an individual's bona fide.

The book itself is now part of the story and for that reason alone it was worth publishing. As fiction, auto fiction, memoir... Who knows?I've just finished The Storm of Steel and as I read it, Jason Arday, kept coming to mind.

Nothing more self-righteousnessly precious as journalists. Arday somehow seems a lot more decent to me.

UKHSA publishes first Cold Mortality Report
Findings show that 2,544 deaths in England were associated with cold weather across 3 cold episodes recorded between November 2024 and January 2025.

"However, new data shows that only a small portion of these recorded incidents, 6 per cent, are confirmed to be related to Garda pursuits." And with that, the Great Wrongway Motorway Moral Panic of 2026 farted and died... And everyone went back to sleep and ignored the real problems.

It also seems to be getting worse in the Netherlands with a 50% (!) in fatalities of 3 years.

so you would equally expect it to have a good safety awareness and record. I think they may be struggling with an increase in battery powered vehicles using cycle paths. In general, I believe that cycling fatalities in Europe have been decreasing over the longer term. And isn't that good news 😊.

No doubt you are correct, but the original graph, which refers to 2015, has no source and it is quite difficult to know what distance cyclists act cycle. Logically, you are correct but then again the Netherlands has much better cycling infrastructure and a long history of cycling.

Deliberately misleading too. Why use deaths per billion rather than per million? To exaggerate, of course. Rhe data stop at 2015. There's no source. The fatalities per million in the EU is around 4.5. And, good lord, look who has the highest number of deaths... the most bike-friendly country?

This was a tragedy, for everyone, 5 children (that's what they were) dead, one seriously injured and 3 adults seriously injured and the media and the Garda Commissioner's FIRST thought is to publicly malign the dead kids. A fucking disgrace.

HD @dmhsofia.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
It seems in Ireland there are two types of dead children. There were the ones who "were always smiling and laughing", "lit up the room by their presence" and there were the mask-wearing ones who terrified their communities and were "known to the Gardaí".

Most people don't give a rats ass for bayesian thinking. They have been failed by experts (financial experts, economic experts, political experts...the list is endless) for years. Rather than lecture people on how they should think, perhaps listen to them and find out what they want.

Stunning how the "smart" (they always call themselves smart), critical thinking, experts consistently denigrate/look down on/ sneer at "the rest of the population" for being "dumb, emotional etc".

Christ, this discussion is such a good example of why Yankee "progressives" are so divorced from working class reality. You have an actual, real fascist con man running your country. Think I'd focus on that.

There was nothing uniquely Irish about the "scandalous" 70s. Child abuse, misogyny, mistreatment of single mothers were universal phenomena. Just as smugness, self-righteousness and cultural superiority seem to be today 😁. At least we could buy a house and actually spoke to each other 🙄.

Don't disagree with the overall sentiment but as a child of the 70s, I bridle at the Irish commentariat's depiction of the terrible 70s. Apparently, we were all priest-whipped, women hating, baby murdering savages. It's a gross mischaracterisation.
