Embrace the soubhiyé ...
In Lebanese Arabic ... soubhiyé refers to that period of time in the morning when no one else is awake but you, and you can either have some quiet time to yourself before the household is awake, or you can invite a friend or neighbor to join you for coffee and tea and you have some catch-up time together before the day get started. My mother often used to have a soubhiyé by herself or with one of my aunts or friends. And now that I am a mom of two myself and I don't sleep in anymore, I really value that time when you can just gather your thoughts and have that moment to yourself.

From ChatGPT:
How would you describe a golf clap?

ChatGPT said:
A golf clap is a quiet, restrained, and polite form of applause, typically involving slow, soft clapping with minimal enthusiasm. It’s often used to show respectful appreciation—such as after a golfer makes a putt—without disrupting concentration or decorum. Outside of golf, it's sometimes used sarcastically to imply lukewarm or ironic approval.

On AI, Journalism, and the Irreplaceable Act of Writing

By Jeff Bezos–style voice

Writing—real writing—is an act of human clarity in a noisy world. It is deliberate. It is difficult. And in the hands of a great journalist, it becomes a form of public service.

That’s why, as artificial intelligence becomes more capable, it’s important to be honest about what it can and cannot do.

AI can imitate. It can generate text. It can even mimic tone, structure, and syntax. But it cannot think like a journalist. It cannot replace the years of lived experience, the painstaking sourcing, or the gut instinct that tells a reporter when a story is being buried. And above all, it cannot replace the writer’s eye—the ability to observe, to distill, to frame a narrative that not only informs but resonates.

The act of journalistic writing is not content production. It is curation of fact, interpretation of significance, and the crafting of insight. A lede that stops you cold. A sentence that carries weight. A question that refuses to go away. These aren’t artifacts of automation. They’re the result of hours spent listening, wrestling, editing, rewriting—often in solitude, almost always with purpose.

Yes, AI can assist. It can summarize transcripts. It can check for style. It can surface documents buried in data. These are tools—valuable ones. But using a tool is not the same as doing the work.

If we reduce journalism to something AI can replicate, we have misunderstood both AI and journalism. The former is a marvel of computation. The latter is a calling.

In the companies I’ve built, I’ve always believed in empowering people to think long-term, to embrace hard problems, and to invent on behalf of others. That’s how journalism must now approach AI: not with fear, but with rigor and resolve.

The blank page still belongs to the writer.

And the best writers—the ones who use facts like scaffolding and words like chisels—are not going anywhere.

Happy Opening Day!
THE SPIRIT OF OPENING DAY by Greg Shea.
Today you’ll still be able to turn the double play.
Today you’ll end your contract holdout.
Today you won’t lose a business deal in the sun. Today you’ll find yourself rotating your arm around your head to stretch the shoulder and keep it loose.
Today sunflower seeds strangely find their way into your back pocket.
Today you’ll think of wearing a black suit to match the eye black.
Today you’ll have the steal sign.
Today you slip up in a meeting and mention “our sales team vs. lefties.”
Today as the toast comes out of the toaster, you’ll still remember how to execute a perfect “pop-up” slide.
Today a hot dog and peanuts for lunch will sound about right.
Today you tell a co-worker to “get loose.”
Today the only strike you’ll know about is above the knees and below the armpits.
Today you’ll wear your jacket only on your pitching arm.
Today you’ll buy two packs of gum and stuff them in the side of your mouth to look like a player.
Today, during lunch, you’ll wonder why Coke doesn’t come in a wood can.
Today you’ll scratch yourself and spit for no apparent reason.
Today you’ll wonder why stirrup socks never caught on as a fashion rage.
Today you’ll be the rookie looking to make it big.
Today you’ll be the wily vet with just a little something left.
Today you’ll look for the AM dial on your radio.
Today mom’s watching.
Today dad’s in the backyard with his glove.
Today will be hopeful.
Today it’ll still be a kids’ game.
Today you’ll be a kid.
Today is Opening Day!

There is a darkness reaching like rust into everything around us. We let it grow, and now it's here. It's here and its not visiting anymore. It wants to stay. The Empire is a disease that thrives in darkness. It is never more alive than when we sleep. It's easy for the dead to tell you to fight, and maybe it's true, maybe fighting is useless. Perhaps it's too late. But I'll tell you this… If I could do it again, I'd wake up early and be fighting these bastards… from the start. Fight the Empire!

Name a TV series that always cheers you up. [Dialogue in alt text]
Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, "The Disaster Show":

“Okay, Allison, say “thank you” right now if you can hear me.”
“Thank you.”
“Good. You’re probably noticing there are no cue cards out there. I lied before, we don’t have the cue card guys. I didn’t want to make you nervous.”
“Thank you very much.”
“I’ve got the script right here, if you need us.”
“No, you’re really too kind.”
“That’s the spirit.”

When the monologue’s over she calls up to the gallery. “I will come up there and kill you.”

It's not like she's known for being terribly brave. From The Hill on Tuesday:
Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-Ind.), who announced her opposition to the resolution over the weekend, re-upped that position Tuesday morning, arguing that the budget resolution does not do enough to rein in deficit spending.

“We have a baseline that includes $3.5 trillion, and we’re only committing to really $150 billion,” she said. “It’s just really sad.”

The Indiana Republican — who is known to flip-flop stances on high-stakes votes — dismissed any notion that she would change her position, suggesting that she was dug in on the opposition.

“I don’t change my vote if things don’t change,” Spartz said. “I don’t think you guys get right memo. I never change my vote without changes in the rules or changes in procedures.”
