Wondering what might have caused a bond market spike

That trade off still applies with real time embedded systems of course. One of the current limiting factors when AI interacts with the outside world.

A level economics applications up 10% in last 12 months I read. But not enough teachers to satisfy demand. Not sure if market failure is on the syllabus.

I suppose the wording acknowledges there are uneducated centre right people.

Presume the classical liberal response to this market failure will be to expect a cadre of economics teachers to emerge spontaneously ?

Perhaps further education should feature in your new publication ? Part of the Burnham Manchester project has been about building HE/FE links. If "reindustrialisation" is to happen this sector will be key.

Agreed. Just checked a former contact's LinkedIn profile. "Dave has no recent posts" it states. Nope because he passed away in 2019.

The whole nomenclature surrounding this issue probably reflects the inherent snobbery which bedevils our education system to this day.

Recent announcements from the new PM add to a long record of "policy churn" neatly summarised here : www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/publication/...

Maths skills vary wildly amongst students at levels 3/4/5 studying engineering. Not really a problem for most in the workplace. Seeing how a differential equation relates to a physical problem more important than a mastery of solution methods.

I know someone who currently sits in the 1% club on earnings partly because of all those other skills. Don't think he ever felt "forgotten". Didn't want HE or FE just wanted to work.

No sign of further education sector representation in the report ? Odd perhaps as that's where much technician level training occurs.
000
dlaurence.bsky.social @dlaurence.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
Lessons to be learned from the FE sector perhaps. Starved of funds since 2010 but now of course central to Burnham's plans for local democracy. "Second chance" often used by the likes of Gove et al to describe the sector says it all really.

Very strong parallels with the fate many in further education have suffered in recent years. Set up a straw man process and then judge the institution not fit for purpose. Redundancies,"mergers" and whole college closures then follow.

An education system that produced Gove and many other recent "leaders" clearly needs careful scrutiny.

"the route" suggests a single path. The are multiple routes to well paid jobs. Might be worth teachers and parents questioning their beliefs before being too prescriptive.

Fantastic long article by Vijay Pande (a VC!) It's crucial reading if you wonder whether @AI is really a #bubble that might crash. The important thing it clarifies is what to do, politically and economically, "to steer what comes after" the crash. vijaypande.substack.com/p/let-it-cra...

Back in the mid 70s Keele University had a foundation year which all students took covering essentially an introduction to the full range of HE subjects.

Part of the issue with academic/vocational is simply the terms we use to define things. Much of HE study is indistinguishable from so called "vocational" study e.g. hard to get a cigarette paper between many engineering topics at FE and HE ...... including Oxbridge.

Early feedback from people on LinkedIn, who make important comments e.g. skills and FE staffing crisis, suggests the scope of Burnham's proposals hasn't sunk in yet.

Perhaps if the response to our "critical juncture" is to do "...what you told us to do, Diane." we might make headway. We seem to be world class at analysing our predicament as a country not so good as acting on the recommendations ?

Which is an interesting parallel with further education where teacher pay lags primary & secondary levels. Staff recruitment and remuneration will need solving in both if Burnham's plans are to progress.
