I still wonder how many people watched 8 seasons of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and didn't realize that Captain Holt was Andre Braugher doing a self-aware parody of himself from Homocide: Life on the Streets.

After reading some of the ~very mixed~ preview coverage, I'm interested to see how ~the discourse~ treats Control Resonant.

I know this is, like, 15 years too late on this, but dang it still bugs me that a whole swathe of people don't seem to know that "Khaleesi" was not only not that character's name, but not even a name at all! (It's an honorific like "your grace")

It is sort of weird that they are doing a whole biopic on a guy who's most notable contribution to football was signing a very lucky marketing deal for the use of his name in, like, 1984.

It does feel like generally Disney is winding down Disney+ as the kind of place that has first-run stuff going forward. I'm sure the numbers show retention is mostly around families who want access to the Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars libraries and that the new stuff doesn't move the needle enough.

This is a wild thing for a person to say generally, but especially for the person who was booted off Twitter in Musk's first really open abuse of power after taking over.

In marketing right now it's really tough because a lot of what's been SEO-best practice for at least 10-15 years is now "slop coded" and you have to produce somehting a lot rougher to actually grab human eyes. It feels "wrong" like swimming against the current.

Saw the first two episodes of Carrie with a huge audience. Watching it with a crowd felt special. Mike Flanagan has always been worth watching, but this feels like it has a level of confidence and precision beyond what he's done in the past. Summer H. Howell is going to be someone to watch.

Micro review of Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother: Both way more fun and at the same time less commercial than I was expecting. Basically what you’d expect from an arty movie about an islamic hitman searching for breast milk for his kid by the team that was supposed to do the Blade reboot

I know I say it every week, and I know I should stop watching the car crash, but this week's Lioness is COMICALLY fascist propaganda. If you were to ask for a cartoon caricature of what 2026 fascist propaganda would look like, it would look like this. Most of it coming out of Zoe Saldana's mouth

Maybe it's just that I have an eye for it at this point, but just looking at the screenshots of this it seems incredibly obvious to me that this is built with AI? Claude Design has quite a specific "look" and once you see it you can catch it pretty easily.

I am playing through Xenoblade 2 on the Switch 2 and it's bizarre how the game just vacillates wildly between "One of the best JRPGs ever made" and "Ultra cringe anime waifu gatcha machine you feel dirty for touching" (I know this isn't a new thought on the game)

110

FWIW they stopped doing this because it was very obvious that the ads were based off of what was in the emails and, in practice, people found that super creepy.

Daniel Kaszor @dkaszor.bsky.social · 31/08/2026

Remember how the initial pitch for gmail in 2004 was "we will give you mail with basically infinite storage and in exchange we will anonymously read your emails to serve ads to you" and people were mostly fine with that because, get this, Google was generally ~trusted~ not to abuse that?

I know it's on the conservative streaming service, but it's still shocking to me just how ~openly~ fascist Lioness is (which, again, stars Nicole Kidman and Zoe Saldana). If it were basically anyone other than Taylor Sheridan I would expect it to flip around in the end. Don't see that happening here

Hot-take prediction on GTA6: It's going to be the biggest games launch of all time (maybe the biggest media launch), but it will also underperform some sort of made-up metric and that will spawn a chattering discourse among the analyst class that will steer captial away from the games industry

I love how Dolly Parton is politically neutral because: Left: Supported workers rights, donated huge portions of her wealth to literacy programs and science, was an ardent supporter of underpriviaged and racialized groups, ect, ect. Right: Sang country music

My experience with basically every Rockstar game is picking it up, enjoying it for about 5-10 hours, then putting it down. (Usually going "huh, all of these still control like crap, huh?") It's honestly sort of weird to me that they're as big as they are.

The basic premise of LANTERNS seems to be that any job that requires the job holder to have "no fear" means that anyone who holds said job has got to be sort of psychotic and its kind of terrifying to have that be a requirement to be a superpowered space cop.

Each week I do a roundup of movie trailers for friends, and the latest trend seems to be youtube thumbnails of a female star grabbed on the least flattering frame possible and then post-processed until they their skin looks wrinkled. It's bizarre. (Thumbnail microtrends in general are bizarre)

In 2013 I started a games podcast with a friend. We did maybe 3 or 4 episodes (as was the style at the time) and then it went defunct. As far as I know it has not existed online for at least 10 years. Anyway I just got a PR email asking if the crew from the podcast wanted to come to a games event.

Now complete, LUCKY was a pretty fun little series that never quite lived up to the earworm Fiona Apple theme song. Really feels like a movie blown out to series length. Wonder if someone could do a cut of it to get it to 2 hours.

Chatting with Warren Spector was one of the first "big" interviews I did back when I wrote about games. Spent something like half of my time talking about his work on Spelljammer and how the "open" nature of TTRPGs translated to his philosophy of videogame design. He was a delight.

A while ago someone on here posted that they didn't find the "What have they done to us? What did they do to us?" Sketch relatable and at a fundamental level could not understand where the humor in it came from. And, like, I want to live in whatever bubble world that person is in.

A few days ago Danish authorities shut down the site Motherless (for almost certainly legitimate reasons), and it sounds like they basically ripped all of the physical servers out of the wall at the datacentre and impounded them. A bunch of other (fairly major) sites were taken down at the same time

New teen drama show Sterling Point is surprisingly good. Pretty basic premise--privileged NYC teen inherits a cabin in Muskoka from her estranged grandfather, visits and finds a secret sister--but the execution is way more grounded and, I don't know, mumblecore (complementary) than I was expecting.

I still think that a lot of the reason that phases 4 & 5 of the MCU are "like that" is still because they were setting up Gunn to take over as MCU showrunner from Feige and his firing basically disrupted all of the stuff they had planned in 2020 post-Endgame.
