Thought this with the recent article on London Road in Gloucestershire. I think aligning practical re-testing with driving licence is a shoe in and there’s really no reason why it can’t be Introduced. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Let me know if you do it, I’ll join up. There’s quite a few sketchy bits under bridges where the path narrows considerably and the surface also becomes uneven, so care required to avoid falling in.

Just a 5yr driving ban (starting from the date of the sentence) & the statutory minimum the judge could possibly issue under the sentencing guidelines for DbDD. In effect, he’ll serve half his sentence and get the chance to drive again shortly after. Zero regard for the victim and public safety.

No amount of vomit inducing promos can stop people seeing what the BBC represents. An organisation that in recent years has ramped up bludgeoning the last remaining fragments of its former reputation. Efforts which ensure it’s demise, as more continually people switch off for good.

Even with the threat of a complete moron driver behind you, you were still looking out for the best interests of pedestrians. And good his efforts ended up costing him time.

Definitely, had plenty of instances where merely uttering “really?!” is enough to push them over the edge after they’ve MGIF close passed me just to join the traffic queue shortly after.

Hooked in by false promises of friction free travel (as advertised) only to be regularly passed by people travelling on a supposedly inferior form of transport. Must be infuriating. The last thing they (and any other road users need) is a worthless rag winding them up even more.

Absolutely nothing, despite the fact that motorists account for 99%+ of pedestrian fatalities. Not interested in facts seemingly.
Reported road fatalities in collisions by road user type and (other) main vehicle involved in the collision, Great Britain 2025.

Cyclist’s account for 1% of pedestrian fatalities yet get (putting it very conservatively) a disproportionate amount of focus in respect to the danger they pose.

That’s just not in the team’s DNA and completely overblown co sundering were in a competitive, but underwhelming division with a favourable upcoming schedule. In addition to that, we can’t go full rebuild anyway because of our contractual commitments.

Yes my fear is that “we’re now aware of the scale” (even though it’s long since been painfully obvious) and nothing changes to actually address it.

If the findings on the scale of drivers breaking the law and endangering other road users is “shocking”, then you’ve not been paying attention. It’s out there, it’s everywhere and the scale of it goes way beyond the ability to address it under existing measures. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

To be honest it‘s demise is locked in and completely self-engineered. It’s beyond saving. I actually see it as more harmful than a lot of the beyond compromised billionaire owned right wing press, because it carries on with a pretence of being impartial, when it is most definitely not.

A message for all the MGiF’ers (lots of you). If you close pass me, when I catch up and pass you at the lights, I’ll be taking primary position thereon. You gain nothing & actually end up losing time. Also proving you can’t be trusted to drive properly, so need to be assertively managed.

djcaress.bsky.social @djcaress.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
Complete contempt for the law and others safety. Leaving the scene and denying the victim urgent medical assistance. But despite all this, will get the chance to drive again, because through the eyes of the justice system driving privileges are worth more than peoples’ lives.
091
djcaress.bsky.social @djcaress.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
Should be grounds for it, though it’s less about the sentence passed against the charge brought (even though under the lesser charge of DbCD the sentence passed should have been more severe) and more about what the charge should have always been (DbDD).

In what world does driving at 3 x the speed limit not pass that test?! Also, “The accused’s driving must have been a cause of the death or grievous bodily injury but need not be the sole one” Basically, prosecution took the easy option to secure conviction. www.ppsni.gov.uk/files/ppsni/...

So I’ve looked into this further. Defendant originally charged under DbDD, pled not guilty, DbCD accepted by prosecution. Q is why? Article 11 of Road Traffic (Northern Ireland) Order 1995 classes it to be valid when the driving falls ”far below“ the standard of a competent and careful driver.

000
djcaress.bsky.social @djcaress.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
Just all kinds of wrong. No idea how this isn’t deemed as causing DbDD (just ref sentencing guidelines for DbCD & factor in 3 x the speed limit). Then, custodial sentence of just over half the max for DbCD. Worse still “considered to be at risk of further reoffending” - 3 year driving ban 🤦‍♂️

Crazy and lots of worse examples can be easily found. Been various people in my traditional network that I’ve seen in a very different light given their activity. Not sure why anyone would willingly alienate a proportion of their network, but plenty do it without a second thought.

Absolutely defence bollocks, but gets heard and accepted in sentencing considerations. Someone getting to 79 and injuring another road user through their own impatience again shows the current system is not fit for purpose.

Always find supermarket car parks are a good indicator (pardon the pun) of driving standards. Low speed zones, an abundance of clear signage and lane markings. Yet, a litany of drivers who can’t park properly, w/ consideration or manoeuvre safely. Doesn’t bode well for the rest of the road network.

djcaress.bsky.social @djcaress.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
Really don’t like the framing of “exemplary character” as it instills that defendant just had an off-day, thus minimising extent of his actions. Also technically false as caught speeding in the past. Rarely one-off behaviour. Only serious injuries brought to light something that was prob habitual.

Something I did, bold and usually something I’d advise against, especially in recent economic circumstances. No job is worth sacrificing your mental health for. A resignation followed by palpable relief & liberating, then it was prob the right decision. You can now move forward on your own terms.

Common courtesy & taking responsibility. Same with lots of cyclists, but it’s only ever a focus on misdemeanours, whilst never acknowledging where the unequivocal source of danger comes from. Leads to cyclists being tarred with the same brush & being expected to assume collective responsibility.

Yep and this is a floating bus stop a few hundred meters back down the same road, where a man waiting there was killed a few years ago. Killed by a speeding motorist drug driving. Didn’t stand a chance. The asserted danger is not framed as coming from the unequivocal source (motorists) though.
A floating bus stop smashed to smithereens by a speeding driver under the influence of drugs, killing 1 person waiting there and seriously injuring 2 others in 2023.

But cyclists…

Actually, nothing special about this at all, it’s what a hell of a lot of cyclists do by default. Yet the right wing press and affiliated politicians want you to think otherwise, so they only focus on framing cycling negatively. Ever wondered why that is?! Requires a degree of critical thinking.

Crazy happenings earlier. I was cycling up the A647 in the segregated cycle lane and a bus moved past me, stopping at the floating bus stop further up the road. Brace yourself for the next bit. I anticipated passengers getting off the bus and held back until they’d all crossed onto the pavement.
