The glass octopus (Vitreledonella richardi) has a body that is almost completely transparent. They live water column instead of on the sea floor, so this helps them avoid being seen by predators. The only parts of its body that are opaque are its eyes, digestive tract and chromatophores #OCTOtober

Brachioteuthis paralarvae have very long necks that they can extend, but at as adults they look your typical squid. We still have a lot to learn about these squids, so maybe one day we'll find out why they have these long necks. #SQUIDtember

A blackwater photo of a Brachioteuthis paralarva. It is transparent and blue, and it has a long neck. There are some orange chromatophores on the squid.

🎵 You would not believe your eyes 🎵 Firefly squids (Watasenia scintillans) are covered in blue and green photophores, which gives them the stunning bioluminescence they are known for. They are also the only squid species known to have colour vision. #SQUIDtember

Two firefly squids (Watasenia scintillans) swimming in the dark. It is too dark to see their bodies except for their glowing blue photophores which cover their whole body.

A Firefly Squid (Watasenia scintillans) swimming just above the sandy sea floor. It is illuminated, so you can see the squid clearly but its photophores are not glowing (or at least you cannot see their glow). It looks like a typical squid, although at the end of each of its two tentacles is a cluster of three black circles, which are photophores. The squid has translucent flesh with orange chromatophores.

Value your creativity, and understand that imagination is PRICELESS. While in his 20s, Jim Henson refused a lucrative offer to sell Rowlf the Dog to the Purina company. "Never sell anything I own," he told his agent. He knew his creative work had value. Yours does, too.

Master of puppets, I'm pulling your strings... One of Grimalditeuthis bonplandi's tentacle clubs is like a little squid hand puppet. They will flap it around, and would-be predators will think they are getting a tasty squid snack, when they really are going to be a snack for a squid. #SQUIDtember

A Grimalditeuthis bonplandi swimming in ocean without its tentacle extended. The squid is translucent with orange tinge, and is covered in yellow chromatophores. It has two sets of fins which are both flapping. The upper fins have more chromatophores. You can see some of its organs due to its translucent flesh.
