The expansions being marketed as "expansions" + the game being an online game i think makes people think its like your average zone based mmorpg or smth when its one full completed story, very movie-like, i feel like a lot of people picking it up have gone into it with wrong expectations

What I love about Diablo is that there is no clear right or wrong in most cases, with the Prime Evils being the only objectively wrong in the universe. Lilith and Inarius suffered terrible abuse at the hands of Mephisto, but also from each other and it's hard to blame them for feeling how they feel.

This is not Diablo 4 spoilers, these are things from the "Sin War" book trilogy and while not all made it to Diablo 4, some of the lore is referenced and some things have been retconned for the better (such as Lilith's personality and her relationship with Rathma). But some things remain canon.

Angels are beings of Light, they are very social, they form really tight bonds with each other and they suffer a lot when they are alone and cannot connect. So Inarius is a dick, but the kind of torture he endured in Hell very much explains why he would become so cruel by the time of Diablo 4.

Mephisto tortured him because he is angry Inarius took away his daughter (you will see in Diablo 4, he is obsessed with possessing Lilith) and some of the torture included flaying him and rearranging his skin with hooks and tearing off his eyelids so he has to look at himself in a room of mirrors.

--It was Lilith who made him do this, who seduced him, who tricked him, because he cannot bear the guilt of doing this himself, knowing they will never forgive his actions otherwise and thousands of years of torture made him resent her and his children. He will do anything to go back to High Heaven.

[Sin War novel trilogy lore] Inarius paid a terrible price for what he did with Lilith because his own people and his own BROTHER sentenced him to thousands of years to be tortured in Hell by Mephisto personally, in exchange for a truce between Heaven and Hell and sparing Sanctuary from destruction.

When Inarius says that Lilith seduced him, refers to seducing him to rebel against High Heavens and create humanity with her, both things he also wanted, but in the desperate pursuit to be allowed back in High Heavens he has to renounce any love for her or for his children, which she cannot forgive.

The Lilith and Inarius relationship is one of the most debated topics in the Diablo fandom and for a good reason, because Lilith got a massive character glow up in Diablo 4, so a lot of what was literally her being an evil succubus in Sin War became a much more nuanced take on her in Diablo 4.
