I sort of feel the same way about where the "Manic Pixie Dream Girl" observation started out as something worth pointing out but then because a term that people just threw around towards female characters whether it actually fit as as a criticism or not.

"Mary Sue" was originally a means of talking about someone's self-insert character in a fan-fiction, where that character would become "weirdly" important to the plot/characters. But over time, it sort of got corrupted to just mean "overly powerful female character" and just gets thrown around.

Fully. :D I like the director a lot, even in his conversations outside the film, and the Godzilla Theme Park Ride he directed with Godzilla, Ghidorah, and Rodan was really really good (from the footage I watched.) So I'll trust him to showcase whatever his vision is in his way.

Yeah, I was into the early early rumors that the Director wanted to do something around Hedorah (whom I feel is a very underrated Kaiju with lots of modern potential) and was surprised to see it be more of Minus One. All in all, I just hope for a movie that people can enjoy!

I gotcha. Yeah, I was talking to a friend (who actually introduced me to the Godzilla films) about how I kinda wish they had left Minus One as its own film, and had gone more Millennium Era style and made this one something completely different. Still, I am curious to see where it ends up going!

But I do fully understand what you're getting at with the Minus One Universe specifically. Even if I didn't view it as a favorite Godzilla personally, I would also not want them to shift the tone too much in a sequel. I would rather just have a different universe be a Vs. Film style, yes.

OK, yes. I understand more what you're getting at. Yes, I don't believe I would want to have Manila inside the world of Minus One as he was in Son of Godzilla and such. But I do think there could be multiple ways to keep that tone with another monster, but to each their own on that.

My personal Top 10 is full of many of the classic Vs. films, so I guess I have that context when trying to defend them as movies. But preferring the "Just Godzilla" films is such as OK of an opinion as enjoying the Vs. style. (And yes, I 100% know that putting Megalon in that spot is a "Hot Take")

I fully understand that sentiment. But the Vs. style/ the large canon of Toho Monsters is still such a large part of Godzilla's legacy and I understand those who wish to see that style outside of the Legendary films I do push back on the idea that a "Vs." style film couldn't be labeled as great.

Personally speaking, I loved Shin Godzilla and thought Minus One was just fine, but I do get the general desire for a Godzilla VS. film. Though I agree with you specifically that I'd rather not see Ghidorah, only because it's been used so often. I'd rather see something more obscure, like Hedorah.

I think there is a general sentiment (at least among the Godzilla fans I know) that we haven't have a Japanese made "Vs. Film" since 2004 with Final Wars, and are itching for something other than just "Godzilla" in a modern Japanese style.

Ebert's greatest strength was that he knew that it was perfectly OK to enjoy a "bad" movie just as much as it was OK to not like a "good" movie. Ebert also understood that while did need to take his reviews seriously, reviewing movies wasn't the most serious thing in the world.

I feel like this is also related to an issue with how people have used Rotten Tomatoes. Ideally, you see a movie has a 50%, and you're should probably go "Alright, let's look at the reviews to see what half share my taste." and instead it's become "50% = Movie Bad!"

Of all the people who do the "The Same Guy Talking to Himself in Different Shirts to Represent Different Teams and Players" genre of sports comedy, MegaCasuals is my top dog. His "Injury Demon" series this year and the on-going storyline with "Joe Burrow" within it has been a highlight.

This just makes me think of the incredible story of Clarence Nash basically personally mentoring and handing over the responsibility of voicing Donald Duck to Tony Anselmo back in the 80s. As well as the storied legacy of the Mickey Mouse voice actors.

The thing that always disappoints me about it is that at least if they just stuck to the guns of the original idea, then in like 20 years you may have gotten some reappraisal just as the prequels did. But instead you made something that's such a response to backlash it crashes the entire thing.
