An awesome group of volunteers came together today to help Dr. Lee Smee's Lab bag nearly 600 bags of oyster shells to help restore oyster reefs as part of a recently funded project by the Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant. That's about 9 tons of oyster shells!

DISL faculty Dr. Katrina Phillips challenged her Marine Ecology students to examine how caffeine concentrations affected snail behavior and movement. The students found that snails move and clump together, or aggregate, differently in regular seawater than in seawater that contains caffeine.

Our new research vessel is taking shape at the Louisiana-based shipyard Aluma. After Thanksgiving, the hull will be flipped and the deck house attached. Funds for the vessel were made available through support from the Gulf of Mexico Energy Securities Act (GOMESA).

We had some fun today at the Alabama Aquarium with our Tank or Treat event. Visitors had the chance to get up close to creepy crawly critters and chat with our graduate students. Join us Thursday, October 23, at 10 a.m. for underwater pumpkin diving with our scientific divers.

The Alabama Aquarium has raised more than 200 seahorses over the last few years, mainly through the hard work of Senior Aquarist Devin Linsday. Today, some of these seahorses are helping to teach Central Campus high school students about biodiversity in Des Moines, Iowa. @dmschools.bsky.social

Coastal classrooms are not the only place you will find collaboration with our team at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab. In landlocked Iowa, a number of seahorses raised by aquarists from the Alabama Aquarium are helping to teach high school students about biodiversity.

Since 2019, Discovery Hall Programs has partnered with Dr. Paul Harnik to develop Postcards from the Past. An interactive activity developed from the field to the classroom to explore the environmental history of the Northern Gulf Coast. A collection is displayed in the Alabama Aquarium.
