The guy that talks a lot about disasters, history, and other things. If you’re here for exclusively disasters, I’m sorry ahead of time.

You’re going to read and see a lot of posts over the next 48 hours by people who do not understand heat, fire, steel, or air pressure. You will also see a lot of posts making comparisons between disasters which are stripped of all context and should not be compared.

The Edmund Fitzgerald was going to Zug Island outside Detroit. We’re talking the SS Henry Steinbrenner or the SS S.R. Kirby for heading to Cleveland and then sinking.

At the risk of wading into a hornets nest, I think that tornado warnings are issued on a contextual level based on the local office. A meteorologist in the Baltimore NWS office is going to pull the trigger on a warning faster than one in the Norman office. That is a good thing.

The cause of a wildfire has no influence on its speed of spread, amount of spread, temperature of the flames, or anything beyond the point where heat, oxygen, and fuel combine. Literally zero. An arson does not burn hotter or faster than a lightning fire. This myth needs to die.

I see we’ve already started the “how could these giant things made out of dead trees and large amounts of plastics with hundreds of small crevices for embers to land in burn while this green living tree full of water 20 feet away didn’t?! Must be intentional!” garbage already.

There are simply not enough fire resources in the United States to deal with the current fire situation in the United States.

As videos emerge from Spokane of homes burning I feel the need to remind everyone that a wildfire outside of urban areas has an essentially continual expanse of fuel and will look like one big burn scar. Urban areas do not have that. Most of the spread is embers vs radiative heat

The Old Trail Fire burning in Spokane right now is an absolute nightmare. There is no amount of water or firefighting apparatus that will prevent this from spreading further. Winds too strong, fuels too dry, too many fuels available. This is a get people out and regroup situation

A fast moving wildfire has entered Spokane, Washington today August 1, 2026. It is being pushed by 20-30 mph sustained winds with 50+ mph gusts. It has already jumped the Spokane River and is moving through the northwest suburbs. Brown line is heat sig. red is most recent jump.

At least one large tornado has been observed today July 31, 2026 in the Santa Fe province of Argentina. The entire Buenos Aires area is under a further tornado watch as more severe storms move through the area. South American severe season is busy the past two days.

We got *some* new information about the burnover incident in June that killed 4 wildland firefighters in Colorado. It’s a basic timeline but still leaves a ton of questions about why they were there in the first place. Second photo is the general vicinity of where they were.

This explosion in a Japanese mall about an hour after the major earthquake there earlier this week has fascinated me. It’s not a collapse as there’s too much outward force and debris flight for that. It’s universal across the building at an incredibly fast rate.

A strong tornado that struck the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul on July 28, 2026 has received a preliminary rating of an F3. It is being evaluated for a potential upgrade to an F4 which would make it the first F4 in the country since two struck on November 7, 2025.

If the team I’m playing gets caught cheating it is unfair and they are morally bankrupt. If my team gets caught cheating you all just weren’t smart enough to do it first. Thems the rules.

Your house is open for living. The only thing prohibiting you living in your house right now is it being on fire. It is open for living should it stop being on fire though.

Please, I am begging everyone, every mushroom cloud is not a nuke. Anyone can make a mushroom cloud in their backyard with five gallons of gas and enough brush. The entire world will know in minutes if a nuke is used.

I think the reason the “it was arson!” thing spreads in the aftermath of every big building fire is there’s this consistent myth that old buildings don’t burn as well because they used large timbers vs the smaller structural supports we use now. And that’s simply not true.

This morning the CIA was supplying a rebel group in an Islamic country like its 1983. A few minutes ago the US announced they performed military operations in South America like its 1993. And now we’re boots on the ground in the Middle East to stop weapons of mass destruction like it’s 2003.

I had a refugee who carried her five month old through the Darien Gap. I had a refugee who lost his leg when he tried to jump on the train carrying his wife and daughter, slipped, and it became stuck ripping it off slowly as he was dragged beside the train tracks.

Chicago v Montreal and NYC v Philly have been two of the funniest soccer games I’ve ever watched. On par with some of the best CFB games. I’m so glad I’ve picked up MLS.

The official numbers released today for Hurricane Melissa are pretty crazy. Tied for highest sustained wind speed in Atlantic basin history. Highest recorded gust in tropical cyclone history. None of the recordings were from the strongest part of the hurricane because they couldn’t get in it.

This is a photo from a natural gas house explosion (kind of) in Virginia earlier this week. There were a few injuries associated with it, none of them life threatening. This is an example of an upper explosive limit gas explosion and there are a number of things in the photo that provide evidence.

“Why is the US so bad at soccer compared to everywhere else?” It’s because soccer in the US is prohibitively expensive for no reason and the coaches for local soccer clubs are not teaching in a way that makes kids love the game and learn the fundamentals.

Just realized with the paper the NWS used to rate Enderlin an EF5, the first tornado and last tornado in Twister would officially be EF5s based on distance vehicles were lifted.

Refs weren’t calling anything in the first half. Coach told us at half that if they weren’t going to call fouls, to figure out what was a foul. One of their player’s kept running his mouth. So I figured it out real quick.
