We are immensely grateful to our partners who center disabled leadership and crip wisdom within disaster preparedness and response work. We wish to uplift the work of Justice Shorter via SeededGround as well as Germán Parodi via @disasterstrat.bsky.social. tinyurl.com/HJCFall26PolEd
On the left side of the image is black text on an orange background that says: “When we say we can’t save everybody; when we say that every disaster is going to bring about a number of acceptable losses — when we use phrases like that, what we are truly saying is, individuals with disabilities will die and we just have to deal with it.” The quote is attributed to Justice Shorter. On the right side of the image is a black-and-white cutout photograph of Justice, a Black blind woman with her hair styled in 2-strand twists, smiling joyfully for the camera wearing black sunglasses and a cream hooded sweater. Behind her is a cream-colored background with a pattern of alternating vivid green and lavender ovals. The Health Justice Commons logo appears in the top right corner of the image. On the left side of the image is black text on a vivid green background that says: “Justice Shorter – one of our facilitators for the upcoming HJC Fall Political Education Series – is a skilled organizer, Disability Justice amplifier and senior advisor on issues at the intersection of race, disability, gender, health, climate, and crises. We uplift her work via SeededGround, a Disability Justice practice that produces powerful projects across movement spaces. Justice is also the author of Disaster Justice: A Guidebook for People of Color with Disabilities.” On the right side of the image is a cream-colored background with the SeededGround logo and cover of “Disaster Justice: A Guidebook for People of Color with Disabilities.” Below this is black text against an orange abstract shape that says: “Check out her work by visiting JusticeShorter.com.” The Health Justice Commons logo appears in the top right corner of the image. On the left side of the image is black text on an orange background that says: “Disabled people are disproportionately impacted by climate change, so every climate disaster is ultimately an accessibility issue. Disability inclusive disaster strategies prioritize preparedness, accessible communication, community networks that bring neighborhood to neighborhood trust and support for people with disabilities.” The quote is attributed to Germán Parodi. On the right side of the image is a black-and-white cutout photograph of Germán, a Puerto Rican man with long curly hair sitting in his wheelchair. Behind him is a cream-colored background with a pattern of alternating vivid green and lavender ovals. The Health Justice Commons logo appears in the top right corner of the image. The top 2/3 of the image consists of a vivid green background with black text that says: “Germán Parodi – one of our panelists for the upcoming HJC fall political education series – is an activist, advocate, and first responder whose journey as a disabled Puertorican embodies the spirit of ‘Nothing About Us Without Us.’ We uplift his work as Co-Executive Director of The Partnership for Inclusive Disaster Strategies, the only U.S. disability-led organization with a focused mission of equity for people with disabilities and people with access and functional needs throughout all planning, programs, services and procedures before, during and after disasters and emergencies.” The bottom 1/3 of the image has a cream-colored background with the logo for The Partnership for Inclusive Disaster Strategies. The image features artwork by haley brown. On the upper edge of the image are a mix of greyscale photographs and screenprints tinted vivid green. The rectangular frames are lined up in a horizontal row. Beginning on the left, the first photograph shows Brad Lomax and Judy Heumann – two disability rights activists – on a stage before a crowd at a 1970s rally. Both are wheelchair users. Four screenprints follow in succession: half a wheelchair wheel, a snail, a flower, and the earth as seen from space. The final image is a photograph prominently featuring a protest sign that says: “Blockers are saving my kid’s life.” On the lower edge of the image are another mix of greyscale photographs and screenprints tinted vivid green. The rectangular frames are lined up in a horizontal row. Beginning on the left, the first photograph from the 1970s shows a protester in a wheelchair holding a sign that says: “Buses are for everyone.” Five screenprints follow in succession: an infinity sign, a 2D illustration of an eyeball with a diagonal white line struck through the center of the iris, a black circle in the center of a gradient, half a wheelchair wheel, and a 7-point star or splat. The final image is a 2020s photograph of masked COVID-conscious protesters outside of the County of Los Angeles Department of Health. Some of the prominently featured protest signs say: “Masking is bodily autonomy,” and “Masking is my right.” Between the two rows of photographs on the image is black and white text against a vivid green background, some highlighted, that says from top to bottom: “Understanding and Transforming the Medical Industrial Complex: Rooting in Collective Care. This looks like staying connected, maintaining health, preserving independence, accessing support services, and getting where you need to go safely. Power outages, flooding, supply disruptions, and displacement can extend far beyond a storm's center.
