Lots of people ask me to fix modern books that have been damaged - but unless there's sentimental value you can almost always find a used equivalent for considerably less than my hourly wage at places like world of books 🤷🏻‍♂️

Modern mass pub books aren't particularly valuable. They are made as cheaply as possible to increase profits for publishers. I'm a bookbinder and I think this aversion to damage new books is very odd. These aren't the one of a kind niche academic works that became lost knowledge in 1930s Germany.

Trying to sell my smaller electric wheelchair (after getting a bigger one) on Facebook marketplace and the listing was taken down because apparently you aren't allowed to sell medical devices? What the hell! This could really help someone else. What an ableist POS policy. Fuck meta.

Young disabled people need all the support they can get. If you become disabled later in life your workplace will most likely be able to make reasonable adjustments. I had a minimum wage job with an employer who wasn't interested in finding me an appropriate role.

I got MS at 19 and I don't want to say it's the worst time to become disabled because there will be plenty of other people with different experiences but it really screwed me. I couldn't continue education. I wasn't established in a career. I drifted for a decade before finding something I can do.

And let's face it - the less developed countries are in their economic situations *because* they were likely colonised, stripped, and spitefully had their institutions & infrastructure wrecked as we left following independence movements. Don't want immigrants? Reparations might be in order.

It will just all go to servicing the rent we have to pay on all the buildings and services the state has outsourced. The cuts keep coming because rent is set by how much the state can afford to pay. It's always "tough choices" for citizens and not the people extracting wealth from the state.

I forgot I had a telephone appointment today but remembered 15 minutes late. Doesn't matter though because it's now an hour a quarter past the appointment time and still no call 😅

It also just tells me that they aren't that bookish. Brandon Sanderson is huge. Andy Weir. Matt Dinnaman is blowing up. James Islington. Matt Haig. All very successful award winners off the top of my head. They just aren't writing the kinds of stale male books OP wants to read.

Nowhere in the form is there a primary condition you claim for. You write everything down and submit it. I think you break rules if you leave anything out. I've recently been diagnosed with ADHD but I've been claiming for MS and cancer for a decade. No doubt I'll be one of these ADHD stats now.

If GPs knew everything we wouldn't need to be referred to specialists. Also wonder if there's empathy fatigue happening here. The system seems designed to create it. Maybe the position of GP should be a rotation and all doctors should have to specialise so they get comfortable with knowledge gaps.

These guys have many opinions (derogatory) about people on welfare but they'll be the first to clutch their pearls if you mention levels of fraud in small businesses! It was almost impossible to get tradies to give me invoices when getting work done!

With all due respect Caroline. This was poor politics from the bill drafters. They refused to listen to the concerns from the last time it was rejected and maintained the watered down protections despite disabled people and experts clearly explaining the holes. I want to support it. It's not safe.

Posted on Facebook for the first time in a decade to let people know that my dad passed last night. Immediately got fake funeral homes posting links in the comments. Tried to report them to Facebook and meta used AI to decide not to remove the comments 🙃 What a scummy way to try and scam people!

Went to a medieval fayre today and the organisers printed flyers with an AI generated map that was 1) completely immersion breaking & 2) completely inaccurate. Things just weren't in the places it said. A crude hand drawn map would have been way more "medieval" Don't cheapen your brand with AI!

I was fuming when I saw him stacked with Matt Lucas for this season. Matt blocked me on twitter once for having the audacity to quote a news article about little Britain being taken off iPlayer and point out the harm it caused disabled people and pushed "scrounges" rhetoric. Didn't even name him!

I'm really sad that my previously lovely village pub got taken over by a new landlord this year and now everything is painted grey. There's a big TV for sports. A fruit machine. Ripped out the plants outside. Truly awful vibes. Used to be really welcoming but now I don't feel comfortable there.

I remember learning about how beer halls in 1930s Germany were a vital part of organising and sharing political views for the Nazis. Don't know if it's that explicit in the UK, maybe in some pubs, but many are certainly safe spaces for specific views & content like this is for *those* people.

Really feels like he took the essence of the Jeremey Kyle show's sneering contempt and packaged it into a debate show format to avoid criticism. You can only do it for so long before people catch on though. The fact it's garnering so much criticism gives me a little hope tbh.

The NHS fell to austerity era hostile environment mindset at the same time as everything else - people just don't want to criticise it but there's a reason the GP receptionist being the ultimate gatekeeper is a meme. Dealing with the NHS is as stressful as dealing with the DWP from my POV.

Can't express the joy I feel with the weather turning. It's been a bleak summer for those of us with heat sensitivity. Personally this summer has been cursed with death, cancer & sadness. 1 more day of radiotherapy. 1 more funeral. Autumn is coming and this harrowed season will soon be over 🍂☺️

So bloody cheap! That's like 7 workers'annual salaries and he's now getting 10,000 free workers! Sainsbury's reputation has been slipping for a while now but this is a 2010s Poundland move. Hopefully the backlash is swift.

Still waiting on the details for the ominous welfare reform talk that got briefed weeks ago. We barely managed to get the rebellion last time. I fear all Burnham needs to do is put a flashy bow on it. Some minor improvement to motabiliy or access to work whilst making it impossible to access.

Also available for free for younger people after certain immunotherapy treatments. I had it last year following treatment for multiple sclerosis. It's worth checking with your GP if you've been through treatment for autoimmune conditions or cancer.

So is this alert what they planned at the COBR meeting? Why did they wait so long to do it? Surely it was just as big an emergency 2 days ago 🤷🏻‍♂️ It's not just the inaction that is infuriating with this labour government... It's how exasperatingly slow they are to do *anything* when they do decide.

It's just a graph about how language changes though right? It looks big and scary (if you're scared by DEI 🙄) but it doesn't mean anything. I bet these terms wouldn't appear in William Wilberforce's bill against slavery and these dinosaurs would think he's woke.

The people pushing NEET are the same that'll spout the "ADHD over diagnosis" crap without considering the overlap. They want to identify these kids but what will they do with the info? They've already proven they don't want to deal with the costs of supporting people with additional needs.

It's the town I grew up in. Grim stuff. I barely use Facebook so I still have the town FB group and old school acquaintances. Made the mistake of looking through it the other day. Grim shit. It's awash with fash news calling people patriots. It was always rough but never thought it'd get like this 😞

It's only a cheap one but they've come a long way - I think thanks to advances in motors from things like hoverboards and e-scooters, plus battery tech. Much easier to travel with than my mobility scooter. Just making up a spare battery for it as we speak. (I don't trust the range spec of 20-25km 😅)

They delivered it the next day - just as I was heading out for a dentist appointment. Luckily it was just in time for me to receive it. I need it for navigating London. I'm going to try the Elizabeth line on Saturday and I think a wheelchair is more manageable than my mobility scooter.

I wish I had the confidence of the UPS tracking system... it thinks it can deliver my new electric wheelchair to me by the end of day. It got picked up at 1pm today in Stockport and I'm near Cambridge 😅 Good luck! I'll be overjoyed if it works out!

The only way to get a good ginger beer these days is to buy ginger cordial and mix it with soda water. That or sell your firstborn for a bundaberg. (I mean yes you can make your own but who has the time!)

Remember Streeting's review into whether young people are being overdiagnosed with ADHD, autism, and mental health issues? Well, the interim report is out, and there's a reason the media are silent on it (spoiler: it proves what a lot of us have been saying all along)
In others, notably ADHD and autism, rising diagnoses and referrals appear to exceed changes in underlying epidemiological prevalence and are likely to reflect a combination of:

improved recognition
changing help-seeking behaviour
institutional incentives
pressures within existing service pathways
Across both ADHD and autism, best currently available population-based estimates remain relatively stable, while administrative diagnoses, self-identification and recorded service demand have increased substantially. In autism, the evidence also points to particularly rapid growth in identified need within educational systems, including increasing identification among girls and among young people without learning disability. These patterns suggest that rising demand is not simply the result of increasing prevalence, but of several processes operating simultaneously, including:

real increases in distress in some groups
improved recognition of previously unmet need
changing expectations about support
systems that frequently rely on formal diagnosis as the primary route to assistance
Across the system, support is too often accessed through pathways that are slow, fragmented and heavily dependent on diagnostic categorisation. While diagnosis remains essential for some forms of clinical decision-making, the evidence suggests that current arrangements do not always provide the most effective or efficient way of identifying and responding to need. In particular, where access to support depends heavily on formal diagnosis, demand for diagnostic assessment can increase more rapidly than systems are able to respond, generating long waiting times, duplication of assessment and pressure on specialist services.

The next phase of the review will therefore focus on clarifying the relationship between distress, diagnosis and need, and on examining how systems might respond more effectively to these patterns. A central objective will be to identify opportunities for developing more coherent, evidence-informed care pathways that enable support to be provided earlier and more proportionately, while ensuring that specialist services are available in a timely and appropriate manner for those whose needs are most complex.

If they deliver to the king then they'll get a royal warrant for their services. Maybe they could lean into that for branding? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Welfare cuts *could* mean nationalisation without compensation of every private landlord that has a tenant receiving housing income. That'd actually work to get the welfare bill down. Landlords are a protected characteristic in our media landscape though. Disability is a criminal offence.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's just the regular old property developer lobby that usually has them by the balls. All that solar looks like a big upfront cost for new commercial/retail car parks. They'll weasel out of it anyway they can.

In the UK the only real option is professionally installed AC which actually wouldn't differ *that* much between countries if they were installing everything from scratch. They just assume we can pop to Tesco and grab a box unit to hang out the window semi-permanently like they do.
000
Philip (He/Him) ♿ @disabledphil.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
I think that part of it is our window industry standardising on hinged windows over sashes so we can't use those really cheap window AC units you can get at Walmart for $100. Our temporary units are bigger, harder to store, don't actually seal to the window, louder, & more inefficient.

Philip (He/Him) ♿ @disabledphil.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
AC = Heat pump | This concept is rarely discussed in the UK but I think it's vital to our electrification efforts. If we put AC into our public buildings then they will also have air-to-air heat pumps in the winter. It's a 2 for 1 policy. Run with that! (I'd also add cold weather payment for heat)

Just had my assessment. I'm joining the scary statistics for the ADHD epidemic!* 😎 *Provided the multidisciplinary team agree with the doctor I just saw - they need to have more eyes on because of my complex health... But today's doctor's gut feeling is that they'll agree 😅

Philip (He/Him) ♿ @disabledphil.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
Sounds like transitioning to heat pumps (which is what AC is and would make sense for most conference venues!) would cause them less disruption in the long run 😅

Such a weird out of body experience just scooting through the village with an AED in my basket at the maximum 4mph allowed by law. Disabled people can't have emergencies i guess 🤷🏻‍♂️ Anyway. Fuck MS, Fuck my father's cardiomyopathy. Ring your loved ones and tell them you love them ✌🏻

(Thankfully not! He's still alive!) I've managed pretty well to tailor my day to day life so I don't run into confrontations with my limitations often so this was the most violent realisation I've had in a long time. Dad is safe at hospital and I'm decompressing (otherwise I wouldn't post this).

Maybe this should be saved for a journal I'll one day remember to write in but I'll shout it into the void. I became grimly aware of my disability today when rushing to fetch the defibrillator from the village hall. Was my dad going to die on my living room floor because my scooter was too slow?..
