Vegas is hot, but dry and flat. 90-100 is lovely to bike in with an e-bike. You get enough breeze from biking speed to make that very comfortable.

This is fantastic! Loud vehicle noise is a plague on the city and I am happy to see the data being tracked to show how often it is a problem.

Also, the beauty of car light is I can drive an old paid off car forever because I am not reliant on it. Something goes wrong with the car and it takes a bit to fix, oh well I still get around.

It took me years to try an ebike because I felt as a healthy fit cyclist I shouldn't need one. Except riding to work was an uphill and sweaty ride, so I just took the car. An ebike was a total game changer for my commute. Saying this discourages people from trying an e-bike and isn't very helpful.

Imagine if you didn't have to drive the kids to school or soccer practice because they are able to safely ride their bikes there.

Everyonce in while I see comments that remind me that there are some really dumb people out there. This is one of them. You really think streets didn't exist before cars?

Car insurance is required because if you hit something or someone you are likely to cause serious damage. When a bike hit something they generally just cause serious damages to themselves so what is there to insure against?

Funny, I see vehicle do these things all the time and have never seen a cop do anything about it.

There is a reason why Edmonton has some of the most affordable housing in Canada and it is all to do with allowing the missing middle.

That is a weird assumption to make, but I guess you can believe whatever makes you feel good about yourself.

I grew up in the 90's and can see a huge difference in car dependency from then to now. If you think there is no difference you aren't paying attention.

The drivers seem to think that only they should be allowed to get around safely and continually demand that all transportation dollars only cater to 70% of the people who drive. Seems like they are the ones to blame.

Where I live about 2% of the city commutes by bike and about 30% that cannot drive, but could bike if it was safe. About 0.7% of the roadways have bike infrastructure. The city council is very pro bike, yet many drivers still think we have "too many bike lanes" and fight to remove them.

On my drive home every car was going 60 in a 50 zone, I saw multiple cars blow through cross walks, I doubt there is a single person who followed the road rules perfectly. But yeah, it is the bikers who keep killing people right?

So people either have to put themselves in danger or spend on average $10k a year on a vehicle just to get around? And we should all just accept this like there is no other option?

I thought about doing that today and then remembered that I bike to work so I *don't* have to sit in crawling bridge traffic.

If a single car cuts you off do you then say that you no longer apply courtesy to any driver and no longer advocate for roads? Or is this a standard only for cyclists?

dirtsoup.bsky.social @dirtsoup.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
Sounds like you should be advocating for better bike infrastructure so you don't have to share with cyclists.

Cool. An ebike didn't replace my acoustic bike, but it did replace my car.

I live at the bottom of a large hill. The ebike is the difference between me riding a bike casually, or it being a workout that requires a shower. This is the difference between me biking to work or casual social events. Some people to just want to use a bike as transportation and not as a workout.

Same. I tried to buy a new car two years ago. I ended up buying something 10 years old because I didn't like anything new that was for sale. I just want a hatchback that I can put my bike in, has buttons and minimum screens. EV would be ideal.

From a business owner perspective you think you would rather have 10k people go by your shop than have 7 cars parked there.

Can you also test if one could securely park their bike in those places too? I find my biggest hiderance to going places on my bike is not having a secure place to park it.

After looking at many pictures of an emoto vs e-bike the consistent difference is "has a bike seat on an adjustable seat post". That is also the difference between something that can be reasonably peddled (bike) or not (moto). It is not perfect but would get us 90% there and easily identifiable.

Car-lite is a great way to put it. While I still have a car, designing my life so that I rarely *need* to drive has saved me a tonne. My 20 year old car paid in cash is fine because all the concerns about an old car aren't that important when your life doesn't hing on your car starting that day.

Carney and everyone but Smith knows there is no business case to build a pipeline. There is no private investment taking on that money pit. Carney just killed any chance of a pipeline and made the cons think they won so they can't turn around and build it if they ever get back in power.

I used to think and was miserable at work. I shifted my perspective to if I generally like what I do on a day to day basis, am treated well and fairly compensated then I can just be happy doing my job without worrying about always moving up. I am way happier now, at work and in life.

I am well aware of that and all evidence indicates this is causation. I agree that it is a tax, but a voluntary one which also improves safety. It is pretty much a win win. The only reason to be against it is because you are a bad driver, which is an odd thing to be comfortable admitting publicly.

Alberta took away speed cameras this year and in Edmonton fatal vehicle collisions are up, likely to break a 10 year record by YE. Street racing and noise is becoming a much larger issue. Maybe they aren't the best way (traffic calming measures is the best way) but they do make a difference.

Your SUV is also more dangerous to every other car on the road and their SUVs are a danger to you. If everyone drives a giant SUV no one is safer.
100
dirtsoup.bsky.social @dirtsoup.bsky.social · 06/06/2025
SUV's are safer for the people in the vehicle and decidedly less safe for everyone else. The arms race of vehicle size in the name of "safety" creates more losers than winners.

I once had a guy from Florida tell me they didn't need FEMA because "companies like Walmart will show up to take care of people after disasters".
