Well. I guess, based on what I've heard about it, this is OK (although Yugoslavia of the previous age is a bit dubious).
According to this sampling mechanism, what I want to live in is Allende's Chile, modern Scotland, or the Paris Commune.

Earlier this month, by brother and I drove seven hours straight north to put my father's ashes in a place he wanted them to be. I include a picture from the far end of that trip, because it gives a *hint* why he loved that part of his adopted country.
Backlit by a sun about an hour from setting, a spit of land covered in narrow pines thrusts out into a lake. Closer to the camera, on the left waves lap on an exposed portion of the Precambrian Shield, the rock smoothed by the passage of the last round of glaciers. On the right, more distant tree-covered land lies far enough away that the trees have all merged into a single darkness.

We might also say "when writing the history of the first half of the 20th Century, we can thank Hitler's regime for its role in helping establish the International Criminal Court and the need for vigilance against fascism rising to power." You bootsucking twerp.
In a post from Elon's stupidity factory, Ambassador Mike Waltz says "You're welcome UK" in response to a quote from the UK Defense Secretary Wes Streeting: "'We don't always like' what Trump says or his methods but that "when this period of history is written, Europe will thank President Trump for shaking us out of our complacency..."

Ah! We finally see the inspiration for Arthur Ewing's infamous mouse organ.
Terry Jones in a Monty Python sketch, playing a man named Arthur Ewing. He is announcing his intention to play "The Bells of Saint Mary" on his invention, the mouse organ. He has not yet picked up the pair of wooden mallets he will use as strikers.

Note: no mice were harmed, or even present, during the filming of the sketch

Oh, but the elegant long-handled spoon with a wee bowl for ice cream, mousse and custard (even of the meanest sort, as shown)
A box of Jello Chocolate Pudding mix, which to people raised outside North America would (I'm pretty sure) be seen as a custard.

1947 ad for Parker Pens then-new Parker 51 Demi, showing the pen held in a non-writing manner by a hand which is not particularly feminine in its dimensions (although the painted nails are slightly long and the chunky gold chain bracelet is not a masculine fashion of the time).

Some of us are just naturally gifted with a particular physique (which in my case my wife was able to come to terms with).
Cartoon character Jerom, from Willy Vandersteen's SUSKE EN WISKE. Canonically a caveman (and so possibly Homo neanderthal rather than H. sapiens), he is roughly as broad across the shoulders as he is tall, with extremely thick arms. His hips and legs are more human standard, the legs possibly shorter than average relative to his height, giving him a profoundly top-heavy appearance.

As the sun sets on our unexpected aviary, mallards and partridges establish an entente cordiale on the principal of “oh, I didn’t see you over there.”
The same ducks as in the previous post’s picture, hardly moved from previous, now joined by a pair of quite round partridges who are scratching in the snow on the opposite side of the tree from the ducks.

Some aspire to ducks, while others have ducks thrust upon them. Apparently we are experiencing post-snowstorm duck.
In the litter of seed fallen from a bird feeder, a pair of mallards crouch in the snow at the base of a pine tree. The picture is taken from a distance of about four meters, through the picture window of my house.

Post the best picture you have ever taken of your pet:
An authentically enormous brown tabby sleeps on his side, limbs toward the camera, draped across a slightly less-large tuxedo cat. Of the latter, one can see the back half easily. Of his front, only a single ear and a foot can be seen, very similar to a drowning man reaching desperately from the engulfing waves.

This reminds me of something...
Matt Groenings's LIFE IN HELL cartoon, title "Bongo's Dream House". The eponymous house includes a helipad on the roof, a pool with pet duck and dolphin, a robot chef in the kitchen, a "cool car", a shark-filled moat, and in the lowest level a secret submarine pen and a mini-golf course.

Yesterday: Hey, look! it's the first robin of the year! Today: Hey, look! It's forecast to drop 35cm of snow through the course of the day!
The lark which is called a robin in North America, standing on some grass which has only just started going green. It is in the middle of a threat assessment calculation. pondering if that big ape with the phone isn't just a bit too close...Taken from a car mount, the photo is blurry due to snow build-up on the windshield. The red light across the street is visible, but the approaching traffic 50 meters away is indistinct and the next traffic light about 100 meters distant is entirely invisible. The street is white ahead, there not having been enough traffic to make ruts. The sky is almost white. The trees are grey, leafless scribbles.

Once again, we are reminded that Weather, if we may personify it a little, has what might kindly be called a robust sense of humour.
Photo taken on 8 April 2026, showing a mature suburban neighbourhood in the Canadian Prairies enjoying a delightful spring snowfall. The sense that the snow is moving very sideways thanks to strong winds is lost in the image.

Sounds like you need a Book Press!
A home-made book press-- a large vise thread runs through a cross-beam made of a salvaged oak door jamb to move the upper of two laminated plywood sheets, each about 5cm thick. The size of the bed is about 40cm by 20cm.

"Friends" is a beloved American sitcom that aired from 1994 to 2004, following six young adults—Rachel, Ross, Monica, Chandler, Joey, and Phoebe—living in New York City. The show explores their friendships, romances, careers, and personal growth over ten seasons
A screen shot from Night of the Living Dead (1990) showing roughly six zombies lurching through the long grass of a rural American house's yard. It's a very good remake of the original and it you liked the first but haven't seen this one, I recommend it highly.

I'm having a moment of... something, which I'm sure a good Marxist analysis could name. I'm using a pen that was made in 1950, maybe 1951. Works great, although about 20 years ago I replaced a couple of rubber components. PEN. OVER 75 YEARS OLD. STILL WORKING. Doesn't even need a subscription.
A Sheaffer Valiant TD, a very swoopy, jet-age style of pen, perched atop a note it just wrote indicating that it still functions in a year almost unimaginable to the people who made it.

I return here from a sense of fairness. Look at this splendor, and the wider context image which is even more glorious. Land of Living Skies indeed.
A residential low-rise, backlit by a band of celadon pre-dawn, but more so by the high cloud ceiling whose lower element catch the bright salmon sunlight which streams from beneath the horizon. With only a hint of mundane trees and buildings at the bottom of frame, a better look at the clouds from the previous picture. The higher they are, the more brightly lit, until at the top the parts which catch light are all but gilded with the rays of the hidden sun.

BEHOLD THE ROSY-FINGERED DAWN! (looking east, 9:01 am)

Stiff! I’ve heard an opinion that the blending with sugar denatures bacteria sufficiently to render a bit of a sip innocuous even this early. The promised recipe: dirckwrites.ca/the-de-lints...
A lowball glass, perhaps five-sixths empty. The act of drinking has left a thick opaque slope of eggnog up one side.

Also, someone dribbled on the counter. Better get cleaning!
100
Dirck de Lint @dirck.bsky.social · 30/11/2025
So, with the usual losses to dribbles and bowl-clinging, we’ve got about seven litres of *really* good eggnog. Not strictly safe to drink until it’s sat for a few weeks, but tradition demands a night-of-making sample.
A forest of repurposed bottles and cream cartons, ready for the refrigerator. In front the bottles, a lowball glass, not even a third full of the new-made treat. Surely not swarming with salmonella.
100
Dirck de Lint @dirck.bsky.social · 30/11/2025
Until I can combine the two bowls together, alternating scoops between them gives some hope keeping the proportions even in the storage bottles.
A cognac bottle stands with a funnel stuck in its yap. Not so snooty now, as it takes on a load of commoner’s festive beverage!

Dirck de Lint @dirck.bsky.social · 30/11/2025
Solution! Transfer a bunch to a different bowl, then roughly divide the remaining litre-and-a-bit of cream between them.
A ladle moves nog from mixing bowl to another steel bowl. Both are what a sensible person would call full.
100
Dirck de Lint @dirck.bsky.social · 30/11/2025
Logistics problem. 3 litres of cream and (3x750ml) of booze is less than six quarts, right? Well, what’s the volume of eggs and sugar? Oh. Right.
There is very little freeboard in the mixing bowl. Insufficient to need.
100
Dirck de Lint @dirck.bsky.social · 30/11/2025
The rest of the liquor and the cream goes in now, without much ceremony.
Pouring in one-third of the dairy budget, a litre of whipping cream.

The limbs of the whisk pierce the thick froth of cream on the rested nog.

Dirck de Lint @dirck.bsky.social · 30/11/2025
Good lord, man! Read the recipe properly! It wants the sugar AND half the liquor in there before the rest. Well, I’m splitting the difference— another half-hour and then back to work.
The mixer’s whisk spins as rum gargles into the bowl.
