Tinged a bit by nostalgia, my submission for hexproof: I like that this card doesn't have hexproof, meaning it's still interactive, but also promises a dream of making a second one to give them both hexproof, which really accentuates the power of the keyword without being broken/unfun on its own.

Not a mechanical reason, but I like this guy for Reach and Deathtouch. Pretty tame for a Futureshifted card, right? That's because this is the first instance of both the Reach and Deathtouch keywords!

A quick Companion Cube update this afternoon. I'm glad to have created a place where KCI was truly good in limited, but I think it's time to try some stuff that isn't quite as narrow (or as miserable to play against) List: cubecobra.com/cube/overvie...
Cuts: KCI, Scrap Trawler, Myr Retriever
Adds: Proft's, Quantum Riddler, Monumental Henge

Very dead for Top 8, I signed up for the Open Play round and was paired into @griselbrand.com's The Kuleshov Cube, which focuses on graveyard and enchantment themes while also being devoid of red cards. Managed to snag the trophy with this one!

I was excited about this deck coming out of the draft, and it was a blast to play, despite its 1-2 record. I ended up mostly losing to dedicated creature type synergy decks. A highlight of the draft was casting 7 free spells in one turn off of Thrumming Stone 😍 List: cubecobra.com/cube/overvie...

First up, The Depleted Lands, a desert cube designed by a local named Stephen. I always have a fun time with Old-School-inspired cubes that loosen the hard restriction on frame for cards with the right vibes. P1P1 Animate Dead put me into RB early, followed by a green splash.

Drafting a cube based around creatures types as colors. Unclaimed Territories and Secluded Courtyards in the basics box, but once you choose a type for your first Territory/Courtyard, it's "locked in" for other copies of that card for the rest of the game.

Finally, a rare favorite of mine among UW decks, the sort of disruptive aggro plan some call "tempo". Often times this deck will involve the same cheap white threats you see in RW aggro, especially ones with flash, paired with countermagic and single-target removal (ideally also at instant speed).

This is a deck I would consider fairly "midrange". You can see that the creature density is much higher, the removal density is pretty low except when stapled to creatures, and most of the game plan is on board rather than in hand. This deck in particular has a blink plan as well.

This deck is similar, but leans on sorcery-speed 2-for-1s to answer threats while also gaining advantage: Control Magic, Damnation, or Planeswalkers. Classic "tap-out control". This type of deck really wants powerful threats that can take over the game on their own, and a high removal density.

This deck is a little light on white due to the manabase, but I think it's a good example of your "traditional" instant-speed control decks. This type of deck is going to leverage the idea that you can hold up countermagic and/or removal, and spend mana on card advantage if you don't find a target.

what i've learned about #mtgcube design
midwit meme where the middle of the bell curve reads "if you want everyone to like your cube, you have to find a great hook, balance every possible deck, calculate optimal removal density, market it well at conventions, create a good cubecobra overview-" and the low and high ends of the bell curve read "throw a bunch of cards you like in a pile and see what happens"
