Newly announced periodic comet P/2026 R2 (Leonard) is at its closed to Earth, at a distance of 0.32 AU. Currently in Ophiuchus, is moving rapidly southwards. It shines at a magnitude of about 12.5. It features a faint tail. #cometWatch #astrophotography
A small comet with green coma and a faint tail in front of the stars.

Equipment: GSO N203/800 with TS GPU coma corrector, Prometheus Astro Tyr mount, Touptek 294MC-Pro, 2" UV/IR filter by Pegasus astro, Svbony 30mm f/4 guidescope with SV305 camera, controlled via Stellavita.

Image acquired on 7 October 2026, at 17:30 UTC. 48x60s light frames. Edited with DSS, SIRIL and star and comet stacks were combined in GIMP.

FYI back in 2014 Varoufakis' radical left party, SYRIZA, aligned with the Communists and the neonazi Golden Dawn to overthrow the centrist coalition government. After the elections SYRIZA formed a coalition with a populist right party (whose leader happens also to be a Russia lover).

Comet 220P/McNaught experienced one more powerful outburst in early August, resulting to a growing conical shell with a central ridge, with extends for a degree in lenght as of 23 August (more info in alt). #cometWatch #astrophotography
Comet 220P/McNaught is featured in front of a starry field. The comet has a bright nucleus with a rather faint green coma about 6 arcminutes across and a slight curved dust tail with a central ridge extending to the edge of the frame.

Equipment: GSO N203/800 with TS GPU coma corrector, Prometheus Astro Tyr mount, Touptek 294MC-Pro, 2" UV/IR filter by Pegasus astro, Svbony 30mm f/4 guidescope with SV305 camera, controlled via Stellavita.

Comet 10P/Tempel has a very prominent dust trail and it is a rare opportunity to photograph such a feature. Its ion tail is also visible, to the right and below the dust trail. At around mag 8.5, the comet can be observed with large binoculars, in Capricorn. #cometWatch #astrophotography
Comet 10P/Tempel features a large green asymmetric coma, about 18 arcminutes across. A faint line runs diagonally across the image and though the nucleus, representing the dust trail of the comet, created by accumulated dust from past apparitions. To the right of the nucleus and below the dust trail is visible a faint tail. The image follows the movement of the comet, with the stars appearing as trails.

Equipment: GSO N203/800 with TS GPU coma corrector, Prometheus Astro Tyr mount, Touptek 294MC-Pro, 2" UV/IR filter by Pegasus astro, Svbony 30mm f/4 guidescope with SV305 camera, controlled via Stellavita.

Image acquired on 20 July 2026, at 0:00 UTC. 115x60s light frames. From the B4-B4.5 skies of eastern Crete. Edited with DSS and SIRIL.

The reasonably dark site (bortle 4), 8 inch telescope and 49 minutes of exposure helped a lot. The comet is also quite active.

Comet 10P/Tempel is slowly approaching Earth (not very closely though) this summer and now shines at around mag 10. It has an almost stellar nucleus and a extended coma (about 11 arcminutes). It lies at the Capricorn-Aquarius border, moving southwards. #cometWatch #astrophotography
A comet visible in a starry field. The comet has a bright nucleus and an off center green coma. Maybe a faint tail is barely visible towards the right. The brighter stars have four spikes.

Equipment: GSO N203/800 with TS GPU coma corrector, Prometheus-astro Tyr mount, Touptek 294C-Pro camera, pegasus-astro 2" UV/IR filter. Controlled via Stellavita.

49x60s light frames obtained on 21 June 2026, around 23:00 UTC, from Bortle 4 skies in eastern Crete.

The otherwise dim periodic comet 220P/McNaught experience a large outburst last week, reaching around mag 9, becoming the brightest comet in the sky. It has a nice green coma and a short dust tail. #cometWatch #astrophotography
A comet moving among the stars. It has a round green coma (about 3.5' across), a parabolic dust coma and a short dust tail.

Equipment used: GSO N203/800 with TS GPU coma corrector, Prometheus astro Tyr mount, Touptek 294C-Pro, Pegasus astro 2" UV/IR filter. Control via Stellavita.

28x30s (total exposure time 14 minutes), starting on 6 June 2026, 1:00 UTC. Moon at 70% (waning gibbous). Image obtained from eastern Crete.
