People are putting in the work but too many aren’t seeing those gains reflected in their paychecks or financial security. Hard work should actually pay off. Read more in our Substack: dignityofwork.substack.com #DignityOfWork #WorkerVoices #Wages #Paycheck #HardWork

Workers are working hard. They’re more productive than ever. So… where’s the payoff? For decades, productivity has kept climbing while worker pay hasn’t kept pace.

When we looked at more than 39,000 online posts about gig work, workers kept coming back to two things: control, and the lack of good alternatives. Control over when they work, how they work, and how they earn money. And for many, the other jobs available to them don’t feel much better.

Why do people choose gig work?
Graphic from the Dignity of Work Institute promoting its latest Water Cooler on gig work. Large text reads: “Gig Workers in Their Own Words: ‘I have to survive.’” Below, the subtitle reads: “Why gig work? Agency and awful alternatives.” The Dignity of Work Institute logo and dignityofwork.substack.com appear on the graphic.

Working hard is supposed to help you get ahead. So why is it that working MULTIPLE jobs isn’t enough for so many workers? We listen to what workers are saying about their experiences. Read more on our Substack: dignityofwork.substack.com #CostOfLiving #Wages #WorkerVoices #Workers #DignityOfWork

AI, remote work, and job security are some of the biggest questions shaping work right now. At Blizzard Entertainment, workers themselves helped negotiate how they’ll be handled.
Dignity of Work Institute graphic about Blizzard Entertainment workers ratifying the video game industry’s first union contracts with the Communications Workers of America (CWA). Nearly 1,900 Blizzard workers secured workplace protections covering artificial intelligence and AI use, layoffs and recall rights, remote and hybrid work, job security, and four additional weeks of severance. The graphic features the September 9, 2026 CWA announcement, “Blizzard Entertainment Workers Ratify Historic Video Game Contracts with CWA.”

There are two conversations happening about the economy. The headlines say: job growth, wage growth, productivity gains, a “moderating” market. Workers are asking: Can I find a job that pays enough? Can my family afford what we need? Is my job stable? Do I actually have options?

The price of everything is up, from groceries to rent. But paychecks have not not kept up with these soaring costs. Working full time should mean being able to afford the basics. When it doesn’t, workers are left doing more just to stay in the same place.

Dignity of Work Institute @dignityofwork.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
Our research confirms, so many workers are taking on second jobs and side gigs just to stay afloat. Not to get ahead, but just to keep up with everyday costs. Working hard should mean being able to afford a decent life.

Our research shows that “ghost jobs” are a major source of frustration for people trying to find work. Job seekers are spending hours applying to roles that may already be filled, no longer exist, or were never actively hiring in the first place.

If we want to understand how the economy is actually working for people, we have to listen to the people living it. We’re putting workers’ voices at the center of the conversation.

We’re listening to what workers are really saying online, not just what makes the headlines. Workers are talking about sending hundreds of applications, getting rejected by bots, struggling with everyday costs, worrying about job security, and wondering what AI will mean for their livelihoods.

Happy Labor Day! Today is a celebration of the workers who organized and fought to make work safer, better paid, and more secure – and the tens of millions of working people who power our economy today.

Yes, there is *a lot* of doom and gloom out there, but there are also stories worth celebrating. Workers fighting for and winning better wages and benefits, and building lives where they can do more than just get by. That's the kind of future worth cheering (and fighting) for.

Labor law is stuck in the past, and doesn’t reflect how Americans work today – making it harder than ever to organize for fair pay and working conditions in the modern economy.

One of the most untapped ways to tracking the economy? Actually listening to what workers are sharing online. Americans are getting real about the frustrations of working today and listening to people’s unfiltered thoughts is one of the best ways to understand their full stories.

A lot has changed since 2016. The federal minimum wage isn’t one of those things. Workers have watched the cost of everyday life increase dramatically over the last decade while wages haven’t kept up.
