Short Story: Monster Genre: Cozy, Fantasy Word Count: 482 I think anyone who has ever felt powerless in their life is bound to have a power fantasy at least once. This one was inspired by my love of monsters and how as a child I'd always cry when a monster in a movie/show got killed. #writing

Page one of "Monster"

Text: I'm small and weak and easily upset. I'm squishy and obedient, and even when I do what I'm told, I still get hurt. Pain is my closest companion. But maybe, in another life, things aren't so bad.

Hiding under the bed where no one can find me, I like to think about stories and characters and other worlds. Lots of people want to be the hero of their own story, maybe a mighty knight that rights wrongs and vanquishes evil. I never related to those kinds of characters, though. It was always the side-characters, the outcasts... The monsters.

If I were to go to another world, I would want to be a monster. I want to be big and strong, but cute and pretty too. I want to have sharp claws and fangs and shiny horns. I'd be the scariest monster of them all. No one would tell me what to do anymore. If I saw a tasty treat, I would just take it and eat it without a care in the world. If someone yelled at me, I'd bite their head off. I could hold my breath forever and go swimming in crystal lakes and deep dark oceans. I could climb the tallest mountains and fly with the birds. I would find a big scary cave and fill it with furs and pillows and other soft, fluffy things and nest in it like a bird.

Text: But people would start to gossip... They'd find out about me one way or another. And they'd be mad too. No one likes monsters. They'd give the hero lots of gold to come hunt me down and slay me. They'd put my head on a plaque in a big hunting hall if they could... But I wouldn't let them! Heroes always look down on monsters, but they'd underestimate me. They'd think I'm big and dumb, but secretly I'd be too clever for them. I'd ensnare the hero in a trap and then gobble them up. Or maybe I'd make them my plaything and bat them around the way cats do with mice. Or maybe the hero would learn I'm not so bad after all and then they'd be my friend...

But heroes never befriend monsters. And maybe it's for good reason. If a monster came and took my treats away, I'd be sad. And if a monster bit my friend's head off, I'd be mad. I'd want to hunt them down and put their head on a plaque too. But I haven't done any of that!!! I just want to be left alone. Let me go where I want to go. Let me eat what I want to eat. Let me do all the things I want to do. And let me sleep in my comfy cave where no one, not even the hero, could ever reach me. And no one would hurt me ever again...

Text: I recently discovered the actual reason reflections feel so strange. I thought it was the mind playing tricks on us or something, but it turns out demons are real... And they're actually not that bad.

"So is it just mirrors or do you live in any reflection?"

"It's not the reflection we live in, that's just a way you can see into our world. I don't literally live in a rain puddle."

Every demon is born the same time as us. They were our spiritual twins, and their world was a mirror of ours... With a few notable differences. They had no moon, no stars, no sun. Their whole sky was black. Only through reflections could they get a glimpse of the cosmos. Our cosmos...

Text: "It's a really nice night out right now. Do you wanna see it, Scratch? It's the least I can do after picking your brain for so long."

"If you've got a mirror you can hold up, sure."

I had an old hand mirror my mom had given me as a Christmas present once, but I wanted this to be special. The hand mirror only offered a small view of things. A glimpse. So, I decided to unhook the mirror on my bathroom wall and took it outside.

As I walked out onto the balcony, I carefully balanced the mirror and let it rest against my body. Were someone on the street below to look up, I'd probably appear to be made out of star stuff. It was a clear summer night, and I was on the far edge of town. The whole sky looked like sheets of black satin sprinkled with diamonds, sparkling with an unfathomable beauty that left me breathless. My mirror demon, Scratch, looked up as well.

Text: "Wow... What do you think is up there?" he asked.

"Space. Other worlds. Other galaxies. Infinity. Maybe even Heaven."

"Heaven? What's Heaven?"

I chuckled. "Huh? C'mon, you know... Heaven... With like, God and stuff."

"I don't know what that is."

"You serious? I thought-" I paused, weighing the implications. "Huh. I guess I had it all figured out when I saw you."

"An easy mistake to make. But it's okay. You can ask me whatever else is on your mind. For just this moment, we have all the time in the world."

The weight on my chest began to lift. With a smile, I said, "Okay!" And we returned to our previous back and forth. I was a curious mind with curious questions, but this time, I'd try not to assume too much. We spent the night together beneath the stars, and for the first time in a long while, I didn't feel so lonely.

The talk about the recent meh Wolverine game reminds me of the kind of craziness we used to have back in the day. I remember I picked up Wolverine: Adamantium Rage from a for sale bin from a rental shop that recently closed so the new building owners were trying to sell old stock.

Oh ho, what's this? A perfectly normal angel and a giant red devil? Surely they're not related... Jokes aside, this is my take on Lucifer aka Big D in both angel and devil form. For those who know me, my inspirations are pretty much on full display, but nevertheless, I think I did okay.

A blonde haired blue-eyed boy with a golden glow about him. He wears a white robe with a golden cross, and sports an equally golden broken halo above his head. Blue tattoos can be seen on both of his cheeks, with one being a six-pointed star, and the other looking like two tendrils and a circle.

A big red winged devil with several horns and spiky growths protruding from various points on his body, including his shoulders, elbows, knees, and ankles. An equally spiky and thick tail can be seen behind him, and several horns of varying sizes dot his skull-like head. The broken halo and face tattoos return from the previous pic, and glowing blue and red eyes can be seen on his face, collar bone, and chest. An equally glowing red crystal is in the center of this toothy chest, and a large belt with a waist cloth attached sits above his muscular legs, which is decorated with white and black crescent moons, as well as the Brimstone/Leviathan symbol in the center. His clawed arms are raised up high, and glowing blue shackles with white crosses can be seen around his wrists and ankles.

Been doing more monster art for one of my Pathfinder games. I still feel like I have so much to learn but I feel pretty good about some of these...

Art of a shriveled howling husk of an angel with wings of grey and white ash and a red satin cloth that wraps around its body, covering some of its extremities. There is a broken golden halo above its head and a red crystal in the center of its torso. Red cinders float over the fallen angel on a black background.

The mummified undead remains of what appears to be a man in the shreds of a suit and tie, with visible ribs underneath their clothes and a simple gold crown on their head with a red, white, and blue jewel on its band. Sand pours out of every orifice of the undead, including their eyes, mouth, and skinless body.

A pale armored knight in plate armor with signs of chainmail underneath around the neck, with a cross-shaped opening on a bell-shaped helmet and a tassel atop said helm. There's a strap across the chest attached to a sword on their back. The colors are reminiscent of a marble statue.

A heavily bandaged creature in mummy wrappings with only the discolored skin of its ears, mouth, and nose visible, which includes discolored jagged fangs. A single horn curls up from the top of its head, and what looks like a stone slab with hints of writing can be seen on its back.

A bunny takes a movie ticket from an old-fashioned ticket booth in a movie theater. The theater seems abandoned, and is in total darkness except for an eerie glow. The person giving the ticket seems to be a ghost or ghoul of some sort.

Trying to get used to cooking more than just box or frozen bag food and it's been really satisfying. I'm by no means particularly skilled. A lot of my cooking experience has been hyper-focused and really basic. I don't have a goal per say but just the act of doing it and learning feels nice.

Made a cake from scratch for the first time as a gift for a friend's birthday today, and it was a great success! The ganache was made from semi-sweet chocolate and both in the batter and on top are dark chocolate chips, and those two paired really well. Not too sweet, not too bitter. Friend loved it
