san diego this morning at ocean beach
lifeguard station #5 that straddles the jetty separating the beach (not visible) on the left from the dog beach on the right. in the foreground is a huge trough of water, with the surf behind. the water typically does not come in further than the lifeguard towers location. it is about 1/2 hour past local high tide view is of the jetty at ocean beach’s dog beach (san diego). waves are rolling in from right to left and for a nice sunny day the water is running really highalong the san diego river (the open ocean is behind the camera pov about 1/8 a mile back). where this view would normally be a sandy beach with the river on the left, we now see that it’s completely covering the sand. the dog in the center of the picture can’t figure out where her beach isback at the lifeguard tower with a much better view of the flooding. there’s a few people with their dogs at the center. the water was knee deep in places

ha ha: all my life in southern california. they should have have i-5 or the 5 to tease that out 😂
dialect heat map of the united states, as generated by my answers to 60 questions of various words (everyone will be different, depending on their answers). mine shows red thru most of california, fading to bands of orange then yellow for most of western usa. midwest and east coast air bands of blue with darkest blue (least matched) around south dakota and around mississippi/alabama. annoyingly there is a bit of yellow around miami. alaska and hawaii are light orange.

the color key goes from dark blue (least matched) to yellow (midway) to red (most matched)

along the top above the map it says:
Your dialect map
Redder areas talk more like you; bluer areas least.
You talk most like someone from California — about 53% of your answers match a typical resident.

Dear Imagination Library Graduate,
My, how time flies. It seems it was only yesterday when your family and friends read you your first story. You were just a baby. Now you're five years old and about to go to school. How exciting!
This may be your last book from my Imagination Library but you have to promise me you will keep on reading. If you go to your local public library you will find a great number of books just for kids your age. Every book is a treasure and every time you open one up you will meet new friends and take wonderful journeys to magical places.
I hope you have a great time in school. I bet your school will even have a library where you can check out books. You and all of your friends are very special. There is no limit to what you can do or how far you can go.
Just remember the lessons my family taught me - dream big dreams; learn everything you can learn; and care for all those who care for you. You do all of these things and you can be anyone you want to be.
You are terrific, and remember...
I Will Always Love You,

A photo of the abbey at Montserrat in Catalonia, Spain (near Barcelona). There are people walking in the foreground of the photo which shows to some extent the scale. Small trees and bushes are scattered throughout. The blue sky is an intense shade of cobalt.

I did not expect this at all. That's an amazing jump for Becerra! This puts Steyer, Porter and Becerra in the top three. Drop Steyer and the others and we've got two very viable Dem candidates left! emersoncollegepolling.com/california-2...

Hilton (R) on far left of image shows varying percentages from 10-17%, not a steady increase but very bouncy. Next is Bianco (R) on second from left showing8-14% variations again bouncing around. Steyer (D/billionaire) in middle shows a steady climb from 4% in dec when he started to 14% in april. Next, third from right is Porter (D) starting at a high of 16% but falling to 8% before rallying to 10% in april. Second from left is Becerra, who hovered around 5-4% thru March and has shot up to 10% this month. Last is a very dusultory showing by Mahan (San Jose Mayor, I think) who entered Feb and is around 3-5%.

Along the top is says CALIFORNIA 2026 POLL, then a logo on the right that says inside california politics, then ECP in logo-style letters. Under that is 2026 Gubernatorial Primary Election Tracking in italics,
then there's the months and their associated colors. Then the percentages as I described, with names and political party under the bars. At the very bottom toward the right in small gray italic font is Emerson College Polling, CA RV-LV, n=1,000, MOE +/- 3%

Photo is taken looking up along the skyline of a cathedral where a dog shaped carved "gargoyle" leaning over the edge is actually a gutter and because it's raining there's a torrent of water coming out of the "dog's" mouth. Behind it is a carved turret coming to a point and behind the turret is another tower with the slotted archery holes visible in it. The stone is a light tan, darker along edges where time has done its work and the sky is white since its overcast and the exposure is focused on the stonework.

if you check the article it notes the large uptick in such numbers which is what i was referring to
If there was any thought that this was a fleeting pandemic-era experiment of laptop nomads logging in from distant shores, data hints at its longevity. The U.S. government has a monthslong backlog of Americans asking to renounce their citizenship, either to secure a foreign passport or to avoid taxation of their earnings abroad. In 2024, requests jumped 48% and likely outpaced that in 2025, immigration firms say.

Americans are applying for British citizenship at the highest rate since records began in 2004: some 6,600 in the year to March 2025. They are securing Irish passports at a record pace: 31,825 in 2024, and an estimated 40,000 last year.

When drafting an email, Claude inserted my competitor's phone number in my signature block

I am an estate planning attorney in South Florida. Claude was drafting some letters or emails for me, and in the signature block, it had a phone number I've never seen or given it. Now, we use callrail and could have a dozen or so tracking generated numbers that i don't know. so maybe it got it from there. But when googled the number, it was to one of my (friendly) competitors! Another local estate planning attorney. So I asked it:
"Where did you get my phone number from??? jnever saw that before and when I googled, it was one of my competitors. Don't just apologize, tell me exactly where it came form" [sic to the typos] ...

House speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) continues to try to pin the upcoming catastrophic lapse in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funding on the Democrats. But with the U.S. Department of Agriculture sitting on $6 billion in funds Congress appropriated for just such an event, the Treasury finding $20 billion to prop up Trump ally Javier Milei in Argentina, Johnson refusing to bring the House into regular session to negotiate an end to the government shutdown, and President Donald J. Trump demanding $230 million in damages from the American taxpayer, bulldozing the East Wing of the White House to build a gold-plated ballroom that will dwarf the existing White House, and traveling to Asia, where South Korean leadership courted him by giving him a gold crown and serving him brownies topped with edible gold, blaming any funding shortfall on Democrats is a hard sell.
