According to wikifur it originated from an excited 'yes' exclamation (much like yiss) by someone on furryMUCK... all roads lead to furryMUCK.

Yiff is an onomatopoetic word and/or sound, coined in 1990 by Foxen[1] while roleplaying his fursona, littlefox, originally to meaning a cheerful greeting or an energetic "yes", but changing over time to be used more commonly as an expression of sexual interest or activity.

Got an X-Face hopefully working for usenet..? Generated the header with compface, whose manpage hasn't been updated since 25 January 1990 (!)... but hey, it worked! (after fiddling with 50 different bitmap file formats, that is)

Nice to see a new ATP platform being developed (hope to see it truly decentralized sometime), but mastodon currently has a large userbase and many EU instances (and is decentralized!). Some EU gov's are already using it too.
