Dig Alderney @digalderney.bsky.social · 14/05/2026Archaeology isn't just about digging. A host of operations are going on as part of the project. Here John washes finds, Kevin examines the pottery, Jim checks the site daily with his metal detector and Jason and Nich survey trenches in the Paddock. 161
Dig Alderney @digalderney.bsky.social · 12/05/2026Did the people who erected it select this stone as it looks like it has a face? Or is it a trick of the light and human imagination? 2/2 061
Dig Alderney @digalderney.bsky.social · 12/05/2026The 11th and final day putting test trenches in the Paddock turned up something unexpected - and enigmatic. What appears to be a standing stone is over a metre tall, with an unknown portion still buried beneath the water table. Does it have a carved face? 1/2 #Alderney #Archaeology #LongisMenhir 2304
Dig Alderney @digalderney.bsky.social · 11/05/2026... typical of abandoned Roman sites. An unexpected discovery was a vertical stone poking through from earlier levels. This will be investigated further. 2/2 #Alderney #RomanArchaeology 010
Dig Alderney @digalderney.bsky.social · 11/05/2026Day 9 began with rain driving us to an early teabreak. The Paddock was thankfully shielded from the strong cold NE wind and our team found a trampled Roman surface in Trench 7.6 next to scattered stones and patches of clay from the remains of a structure. It was covered in 'black earth'... 1/2 151

Dig Alderney @digalderney.bsky.social · 03/05/2026Busy day in the Paddock, moving heaps of sand. Both our trenches have come down to an intriguing black layer which could be a relic soil. Scratch marks in its surface could be due to ploughing. #Alderney #RomanArchaeology 062

Dig Alderney @digalderney.bsky.social · 28/04/2026These aim to test whether what looks like a spread of Roman buildings indicated by the 'geophys' is reflected in reality. If the water table is too high, we may not be able to reach Roman levels. Crossing fingers! 2/2 030
Dig Alderney @digalderney.bsky.social · 28/04/2026How much has it rained this winter? The question is crucial to the success of the test-trenching exercise commencing on Longis Common this weekend. Dig Alderney @digalderney.bsky.social · 28/03/2026This May we'll be working closer to the fence line, and hoping for fine weather as high ground water levels could frustrate the project. 2/2 #Alderney #Archaeology 040
Dig Alderney @digalderney.bsky.social · 28/03/2026A subsidiary project this year will be to dig a few small test trenches in the Paddock to investigate the extent of the Roman settlement at this end of the Common & discover more about its nature. Dig Alderney @digalderney.bsky.social · 28/03/2026Now Whitegates is no more, it becomes the target of this year's excavation. We'll be investigating the site from 2 to 23 May as intriguing finds of several periods were found in this area during the nineteenth century. #Alderney #Archaeology 161

Dig Alderney @digalderney.bsky.social · 15/03/2026Something only apparent when a fully surveyed modern plan of the Nunnery is complete is that the tower is offset about a metre to seaward. This suggests the tower was built first, then the Romans didn't have enough space to fit the fort walls in on the east side so 1/2 #Alderney #RomanFort 131
