There’s a lot we can do with the solutions we know to improve acoustic environments and the well-being of those most impacted by them, but, at the same time, there are pervasive barriers and resistance to change that go beyond financial arguments. This is the biggest challenge imo.
“Creating more habitable worlds would therefore mean seeking ways to honour ways of inhabiting, taking stock of what territories imply and create as ways of being, as ways of doing. This is what I ask of researchers.”

Vinciane Despret, in ‘Living as a bird: Ways of doing and thinking about territories’ (2021)

The discussion has a section relating some of the themes on repercussions of becoming a "sore point" when needing changes with quotes from Sara Ahmed's ‘Complaint!’, also prompted by the quite widespread view that people "just need to ask". disablingacoustics.wordpress.com/general-disc...
“When you try to fit a norm that is not shaped to fit your body, you create an incongruity; you become an incongruity.”
“Asking for accommodations is framed not only as causing inconvenience to others but as being what you cause: an inconvenience.”

Nothing of what Grok says here really is working like that for neurodivergent people in general, let alone for women. The tech industry in particular, or academia, are strong patriarchal systems with lots of protection mechanisms to keep it that way.
Grok explanation of the meaning of that statement: Alex Karp means: In an AI-driven world, "normal" routine skills get automated fast, leaving most folks scrambling.

To have a real future, you either get vocational training (hands-on trades) or lean into neurodivergence—broadly, brains wired differently (ADHD, autism, dyslexia, etc.). Those let you think creatively, spot unique angles, build novel stuff like an artist, and innovate where AI can't.

He's saying the fidgety, fast-thinking outliers (like himself) will disproportionately shape tomorrow.

In one study of my PhD, 311 noise sensitive participants (32% over 45 y/o, 59% neurodivergent) replied to questions on lived experiences. 69% of autistic and all ND participants, and 61% of neurotypicals, reported that their sensitivity increased with age. www.researchgate.net/publication/...
Bar chart titled “Change in sensitivity with age,” comparing responses from three groups: Autistic, Neurodivergent, and Neurotypical adults. For the statement “My sensitivity to sound has decreased with age,” very small percentages are shown: Autistic 3%, Neurodivergent 4%, Neurotypical 5%. For “My sensitivity to sound has not changed with age,” the values are Autistic 28%, Neurodivergent 26%, Neurotypical 33%. For “My sensitivity to sound has increased with age,” the majority in each group report an increase: Autistic 69%, Neurodivergent 69%, Neurotypical 61%.

También pasa que "se deja" más estar a las mujeres si ya se han devaluado. En los países en los que la investigación académica ha sido y es un trabajo más reconocido social y económicamente, el porcentaje de mujeres académicas suele ser bastante menor.

Or won't go at all, so more "cake" for those who can go, as they directly say in my field also about caring responsibilities. 🙃 I've been quite vocal about this in my circle, as it's SO dismissed, and I had to pay from my pocket several times. Last week I sent this email, lol

"More than noise: Lived experiences of autistic people in real-life acoustic environments"

Highlights:

-Qualitative study based on the thematic analysis of interviews with 12 autistic adults living in the United Kingdom.

-There is a lack of understanding and acceptance towards autistic people and what they experience in relation to noise.

-The negative impact is experienced on a personal, social, educative and professional level since childhood.

-High sensitivity to sound can also lead to great pleasure of music and nature sounds.

-There is a need to increase auditory accessibility, as many daily life environments present important aural barriers.

8/ Research, regulations and commonly applied measures fail to acknowledge diversity in sound perception, reinforcing societal assumptions of what is reasonable and acceptable. This adds an extra barrier when seeking non-disabling spaces. Summary of the findings discussed:

🔊New preprint⬇️ 'More than Noise: Lived Experiences of Autistic People in Real-Life Acoustic Environments' papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.... Results of the thematic analysis of interviews with 12 autistic people living in the UK about sounds, acoustics and social attitudes towards sound sensitivity.
Figure 2. Themes and subthemes developed during the reflective thematic analysis.

Theme: High sound sensitivity can impact and be impacted by everything.
Subthemes:
Sensitivity is variable.
High attention, awareness and perception of sounds impact engagement.

Theme: Lack of understanding and acceptance: sensory gaslighting.
Subthemes:
Lack of acceptance has personal and professional consequences
Needs not covered in noise/building guidelines leads to disabling environments.
Negative effects of inadequate acoustic environments on health and well-being.
Diagnosis increases knowledge and confidence.

Theme: Agency is crucial
Subthemes:
Predictability is important, but it's not all.
Home and work: quietness is as important as difficult to find.

Theme: Music and natural environments have an important positive effect.

One of my favourite poems, by Wisława Szymborska #NationalPoetryDay
There Are Those Who

There are those who conduct life more precisely.
They keep order within and around them.
A way for everything, and a right answer.

They guess straight off who's with who, who's got who,
to what end, in what direction.

They set their stamp on single truths,
toss unnecessary facts into the shredder
and unfamiliar persons
into previously designated files.

They think as long as it takes,
not a second more,
since doubt lies lurking behind that second.

And when they're dismissed from existence,
they leave their place of work
through the appropriately marked exit.

Sometimes I envy them
 — it passes, luckily.

Poem by Wislawa Szymborska
