There are also reports that Starlink services are degrading. So it looks like the US decided to complete the abandonment of Ukraine.

A camera at a local cat café in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine, captures how the animals react to the constant Russian bomb and missile strikes on the city.

This is some unacceptable interference in US politics. "I told him, you can do whatever you want just don't target Yandex! We need Yandex!"

The russians also denied any knowledge of a ceasefire which is almost hilarious. Trump is just making this up

I don't get such an impression from the article, it only says they thought they were going to discuss a potential air ceasefire.

I mean, they had to put an export ban in the first place AND subsidise just to control prices internally, so exporting what amounts to ~1.2 days of diesel consumption is probably all they could

I'm pretty confident Trump is violating America's own legislature here but then again I already learned that the US president has near dictatorial powers on foreign policy. In any case good thing this agreement said nothing a ceasefire because another refinery was hit tonight.

If Ukraine were to hypothetically lose, it won't take much effort to "Chechenize" it. And after annexing Belarus too, we are looking at a new russian empire with something like 180 million people and virtually all resources and modern warfare experience, ready to fall on Europe.

and deprive russia the ability to pressure the rear. They need Ukraine to be bombed and pressured so that their expectation for the war outcome is kept low. And for the EU, a weak russia means the EU is free to grow almost unhindered in all areas of society and project much more power abroad.

When will our politicians admit the elephant in the room: the American administration don't want a defeated russia or a powerful EU. They will never let Ukraine use Starlink to target ballistic missile launchers because (in their mind) it will get Ukraine a dangerous advantage

🔴 This morning, Russia has killed 12 people who were travelling by bus in Kramatorsk. Another 14 were injured. Vadim Filashkin, head of Donetsk military administration: "Russia comes to Ukrainian land bringing death. It strikes our cities, kills our people, and multiplies its crimes every day."
Charred bus still in flames, debris all around

I have come to accept that 99% of what Trump writes in social media can be ignored outright. It has no impact on reality anyway, Ukraine is not stopping attacks on russian oil as a result of these posts

There's a feeling that if they insert the war hybrid into everything, the population will panic less? The first missile strike on the EU will be declared hybrid too..

Something tells me Ukraine will just ignore this "request". Russia clearly aims to destroy what's left of the grid this winter, Ukraine cannot give up on their own instrument of pressure unless something equally good is provided by the Americans

This is worse than a crime, it’s a mistake. Trump/Witkoff/Kushner still think this war is about a piece of territory. Putin would simply pocket the territorial gain & move on to using the negotiations to push his ultimate aim of controlling Ukraine.

As someone who really wants AI companies to be limited in the damage they're doing to the world, it's incredibly frustrating when the most vocal contingent of AI skeptics keep repeating the idea that AI doesn't work at all. Maybe that was the case 3 years ago but not any longer.

There is nothing more dangerous than a rushed peace deal, negotiated by people like Kushner who have no formal legitimacy or qualification to be involved in the process.

I am generally supportive of having presidential pardon powers because if gives a system this extra flexibility in case another branch of the government turns authoritarian. Of course, the system collapses if the president decides to pardon criminals..

It will really put to the test Europe's resolve to keep supporting Ukraine because in addition to military aid, they will probably need tens of billions of Euros of financial aid just to keep the economy together

Anders, where is this whole thing going? It is scary to watch the amount of economic destruction russia is inflicting on Ukraine and vice versa. Grain exports are about -75% down for Ukraine and -60% for russia due to port strikes.

I’m beginning to suspect that wasting years dragging feet on military aid to Ukraine and playing escalation management games, giving an aggressive militaristic Russia the time and resources to ramp up its war machine to full power against the free world, might not have been the brightest idea.

Unfortunately too much negligence leads to civilian deaths. When the mall in Krivyi Rih was attacked I immedietely thought how absurd it is that a mall in a frontline city is allowed to be packed with so many people, and apparently people were not in shelters

I am not saying it's not, but the point is that every single public statement by putin about the war is how it's going well, how they are advancing, and how Ukraine is on the verge of economic collapse and will be defeated. There's no hint of an urgency to use a nuclear weapon.
110
diedamedesberges.bsky.social @diedamedesberges.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
It's especially weird because whenever Putin appears on TV to speak about the war, he keeps insisting that it's going well and that Ukraine will certainly be defeated

But on a serious note, the fact that there was 0 press is quite worriesome, unlike when Trump interacts with putin. And it looks like mobilization is only a question of how many and not if at this point. putin clearly bets on more and more escalation.

They don't want to deny russia it's only key advantage - overwhelming missile strikes. Trump basically confirmed it when he said helping Ukraine target ballistic missile launchers would be "escalatory". The current status quo where is Kyiv is bombed almost every day suits the Americans.

I wonder how the russian government responds to this crisis? Any choice looks bad. Doing nothing means tens of thousands of sellers potentially going bankrupt + wasted loans, acknowledging the attacks and compensating everyone means new trillions of rubles to the deficit.

What scares me the most about AI is the cognitive damage and dependence it causes. I code a lot on Python and MATLAB and I feel like I already cannot work without it. I happened to finish my M.Sc in 2023, the last second before AI entered everywhere,

I am not so sure.. as a counterpoint, Ukraine has established the fact of mobilisation early in the war and it is generally accepted by society. In the case of russia, they staked everything on voluntary contracts and this is not something they can easily back out from

Anders, did you by chance listen to this interview of Peter Zeihan and Kurzin? Early in the interview he suggests that everything that happened so far is some kind of "warm up", and russia can mobilize millions of people if they want to take the war to a serious level youtu.be/HwMXWMhWt_Y?...

It is dangerous but maybe Fedorov is right, that having a legitimate government that people trust will be more beneficial in the long run, and it is worth the risk. This isn't 2022 anymore and society is losing trust in Zelensky. It also creates problems with western allies.
