We’re proud to share that AB1988, authored by @asmgailpellerin.bsky.social passed the full Assembly yesterday with unanimous support. We are proud to sponsor this legislation to continue providing connection between people in crisis and trained human care through the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

We are allies in this work, advocating for the unmet needs of our Native communities who are dealing with unacceptably high numbers of death by suicide. This is the work we show up for every day, making sure support is within reach where it has too often been out of reach.

For our Native American communities, suicide prevention and mental health support must be accessible and culturally responsive for the communities who need it most.

“Suicide prevention within Native communities is an urgent public health priority that demands culturally grounded, community-led solutions. Evidence shows that a sense of belonging is one of the strongest protective factors against suicide. Culture is prevention.”

This week at the State Capitol, our VP of Crisis Care, Shari Sinwelski, joined tribal leaders & state partners to elevate what it takes to strengthen CA’s 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and elevate the significant funding needs to address disparities in health access, including mental health!

Belonging and connection are powerful protective factors in moments of crisis. American Indian and Alaska Native communities face the highest suicide rates in the country, reflecting long-standing barriers to care. California has the largest Native American population in the nation.

In this field, the people providing care are doing deeply demanding work. That’s why the systems we build to support them matter so much. When clinicians and teams are grounded, supported, and able to keep growing, they’re better able to show up for the people who rely on them every day.

Katrina Baker, a 988 counselor with Didi Hirsch and member of our Next Gen Council—who drafted the initial concept for AB 1988—testified today alongside @asmgailpellerin.bsky.social in support of this initiative, and we are grateful for their leadership on this critical issue.

What happens when someone in crisis turns to AI instead of a person? Didi Hirsch is sponsoring AB 1988, a bill that would require chatbots to pause and connect users to real support like the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline if they show signs of suicidal thoughts.
