Bauers just said this was on purpose. They saw how the Dodgers celebrated last year - “you would have thought it was a handshake line in Spring Training.” This stuck with them.

The Captain came from nothing. He was very generous to his workers, and put a lot of money into Milwaukee. He really would wear a cap, I think.

Answering four runs and blowing past it is really goddamn difficult. It didn't look like it, the way they did it. But it is.

You notice how muted the celebration was? They’re on a damn mission

Levering saying that struck me, and I couldn't think of why. I'll bet you anything this is why.

A Milwaukee-Cleveland Series would be the best thing for baseball in some time.

Roberts is a nice guy. For various reasons some players past and present don’t think much of him as a manager. This strikes me as something you don’t do in public.

I have no problem with the Dodgers as constituted. I do have a problem with a certain type of Dodger fan who is so illiterate in baseball that they whisper about cheating. You can have all the talent in the world, but decisions win ballgames.

Francis began to behave like his time was short. I mean politically. You could see it coming before his final illness. There is every reason to believe Leo will be healthy for some time. But if there is something to worry about, there are ways to discern it before it's visible.

An otherwise healthy person can function normally with a lobe removed. He is athletic.

Regarding the Pope's illness, a physician told us that to find a lung "nodule" is common. It is the smallest visible "opacity," too small to be considered a tumor. By its nature the nodule is localized - cancer cells have almost surely not spread beyond the lobe, so it is removed.

His illness specifically?

The point is they are the only team in baseball with a winning record in these situations.

As for Bauers, he went 0-for-4 on October 6th, his birthday. This bothered him. He was the last man in the cage that night, the first the next day. He had a big hit and scored a run the following day, and against the Dodgers has had two of the smartest, most important at-bats you'll see in years.

Murphy has these guys playing like college kids with scouts in the stands. Do you know what I mean? They are extraordinarily disciplined. A guy gets to the big leagues, he wants to play the way that got him there. They are doing this Murphy's way, and they're happy to do it. It's a hell of a thing.

If you're around baseball long enough you can tell when a team smells blood. The Brewers smell blood.

Sarah Langs can tell you but the Brewers are something like three or four games over .500 in games where the other side scores first. That is how they deal with adversity.

If you don't know, Snell implied the Brewers didn't do well with adversity, whatever that means, and he was going to teach them. He pitched very well today. But look what they did the moment they went down.

Peralta never wanted to leave Mileaukee, and was clearly miserable with the Mets. He has almost come out and said so. “They treat me like a king [in Tampa Bay].”

Uribe, for the Brewers, I don’t want to meet him in an alley. Nice fellow, great pitcher, but he’s what they say about closers, you know. He’s nuts. It isn’t a bad thing.

There is a lot of series left. The Dodgers are the Dodgers. But here's the thing about the Brewers: they don't win of lose a lot in a row. Wherever they are, they bounce back. With a head start they will be difficult to beat.

My God, Bauers. They've made Yamamoto work all day, but it's the third inning now and they have their read on him. Bauers took a dozen pitches. He kept fouling off balls outside the zone. Yamamoto was unnerved. Finally he walked. Next up, Yelich hits a two-run single.

This is one of the main points of the Berra documentary. The marvelous thing about it is that while it is very much a loving tribute by his family, it tells no lies. With Berra the truth is usually more fantastic than the myth.

Berra was like Gwynn. He put the ball in play. He did not strike out.

DiMaggio made fun of Berra when he came up on 9/22/46. Then Berra caught Game 1 of a doubleheader, a 4-3 Yankee win where he went 2-for-4 with a two-run HR. DiMaggio apologized and took him seriously forever after. Berra could and did hit those balls. He was the best bad ball hitter I ever saw.

William Contreras. The reference to Uecker is illuminating. You have to tell yourself there’s no one better. You also have to remember it’s not true.
It’s funny … I still have a little regret, years later, for being rude to my agent about the trade. ‘MILWAUKEE?!’ Wow. What a wrong way to react. Now, I hope I spend my whole career here — and I hope to be on the first World Series winner in Brewers history. It’ll happen, I bet. It’s like Bob [Uecker] always said: ‘No one better than you.’ Well actually, Bob, probably some are better than me! I’m not the best. None of our group is. But if you’re telling me another team is the best??? Man, I swear. I haven’t seen them. No one better than Milwaukee right now. No one better than US.”

A kid reporter - an actual kid - asked Murphy what he said to Misiorowski to calm him down. After making sure his sons saw the kid, Murphy said, "We have a stick, a paddle, that we keep in back... I don't know if your parents use that, but I think I struck him 7-8 times, he got the message."

This is in no way a political statement in word or intent, but if you read between the lines - the tone and emphasis - it absolutely is.

Three or four times the Dodgers could have blown that game open, and defense saved Milwaukee.

You can get Uecker jerseys made at the ballpark, but there is a lucrative trade in counterfeit Uecker Braves jerseys. No one is looking to buy Mathews or Spahn, but there is money in Aaron and Uecker.

The Brewers went down a run on a tough play. They were patient. Misiorowski dug deep, kept them in it. Their defense most certainly kept them in it. They saw Skubal once through, learned what they wanted. Now they are attacking him.

Pat Murphy on Skubal: “I just want to step on his throat. I mean that respectfully.” This was from the Los Angeles's Times's man, if you wonder.

My God. Think of Madden. Football was serious business to him. I mean he considered it beautiful, and in a way his life was devoted to teaching that. That's what the video game is for, and so forth. If he saw this he'd yell at the camera like he did the Raiders.
