From a day spent in the recording booth, reading the prologue and epilogue for the audiobook. Writing a book is one thing. Saying the words out loud is another. A little surreal, a little emotional, and very cool. How do you like your books: in your ears or in your hands?

After leaving Afghanistan, Marwa had to start her education over. Here she talks about pursuing her dream of becoming a doctor, with help from @chathamu.bsky.social in Pittsburgh. A few moments from our conversation with @wtae4.bsky.social. Watch the full interview here: youtu.be/VBEa4RTf_W8?...

Maryam spent her first year of college at the University of Pittsburgh. Here she is in “Cady”-the Cathedral of Learning- her favorite campus study spot. She read Paul Kalanithi’s When Breath Becomes Air, which rocked her world. He was becoming a neurosurgeon. She has the same plan. #TheLastFreeWomen

I am in awe of these young women. They learned English, navigated college apps, lived on their own for the first time, faced down Organic Chemistry and Physics, and conquered Cards Against Humanity. If you want to know what hard work means, these four can explain.

August 15, 2026 Today marks five years since the fall of Kabul. The devastating impact on the girls and women of Afghanistan who remain there is beyond compare. They are living in “the most repressive country in the world for women,” a UN official has said.

When Samira, Wais, and baby Durrin arrived in Pittsburgh in the dead of winter, they had no furniture. Rebecca’s sister-in-law Laura jumped to action, borrowed a truck, and got them a proper mattress (on sale!). The acts, large and small, by Americans of every stripe will give you renewed faith.

Almost immediately after landing in Houston, Samira and her husband, Wais, decided to have a baby. Samira wanted to be the mother she never had. Today, their daughter Durrin is whip-smart, loves pizza and sweets, and once asked a diner waitress for matzoh ball soup.

After fleeing Afghanistan, Marwa wasn't sure she would ever return to school. The future she had spent years working toward suddenly seemed out of reach. What followed was not the path she had imagined, but it opened doors she never expected.

The day Kabul fell, Mursal had just graduated from law school. The future she imagined disappeared almost overnight. What came next was a journey from Houston to Cornell, powered by determination and a refusal to give up.

Moments from a trip to Afghanistan in 2012. A glimpse of what felt like a golden age for Afghan girls. The schools were filled with students who dreamed of becoming doctors, teachers, engineers, and scientists. These photos have stayed with me ever since.

Evidence that books are not written alone. They are questioned, challenged, corrected, and improved by many generous people along the way.

Inside a military transport plane bound for Mexico City from Doha, families who had left nearly everything behind waited to learn where they would call home. None of us could imagine where the journey would lead.

The latest reporting from The New York Times documents what many Afghan women are facing today: restrictions on education, employment, travel, and even the ability to earn a living. It's a sobering look at what life has become for millions. Essential reading: www.nytimes.com/2026/06/21/w...
