The opening to The German Ideology by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels
The opening to The German Ideology by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels
Hitherto men have constantly made up for themselves false conceptions about themselves, about what they are and what they ought to be. They have arranged their relationships according to their ideas of God, of normal man, etc. The phantoms of their brains have got out of their hands. They, the creators, have bowed down before their creations. Let us liberate them from the chimeras, the ideas, dogmas, imaginary beings under the yoke of which they are pining away. Let us revolt against the rule of thoughts.

A passage from Anti-Dühring by Frederick Engels, 1877
"When at last it becomes the real representative of the whole of society, it renders itself unnecessary. As soon as there is no longer any social class to be held in subjection; as soon as class rule, and the individual struggle for existence based upon our present anarchy in production, with the collisions and excesses arising from these, are removed, nothing more remains to be repressed, and a special repressive force, a state, is no longer necessary. The first act by virtue of which the state really constitutes itself the representative of the whole of society — the taking possession of the means of production in the name of society — this is, at the same time, its last independent act as a state. State interference in social relations becomes, in one domain after another, superfluous, and then dies out of itself; the government of persons is replaced by the administration of things, and by the conduct of processes of production. The state is not "abolished". It dies out."

im sure this wont ever happen but on the off chance someone somewhere somehow mispresents marxism and makes some silly claim about historical materialism this passage does a good job of clarifying it
A passage from correspondence between Engels and J Bloch from 1890:
I have interpreted your first main phrase in the following way: According to the Materialist Conception of History, the factor which is in the last instance decisive in history is the production and reproduction of actual life. More than this neither Marx nor myself ever claimed. If now someone has distorted the meaning in such a way that the economic factor is the only decisive one, this man has changed the above proposition into an abstract, absurd phrase which says nothing.

adorno: 'the whole is the false' me:
anime girl in cute chibi style saying "ahh, so it's like that, huh. i understand everything now." underneath the speech bubble is an arrow pointing at her clarifying that she, in fact, "doesn't get it at all"
